Goals are the guides all through our life. We all have goals that we are moving towards and making a great effort to achieve. This is a good thing. Or can it be bad? How many of us never reach our goals and yet we have tried so hard and really thought about nothing else? I believe the mistake most of us make is that we do not focus(集中) on our present situation.
Let me explain. Most of us see our present situation as a stepping stone that we use simply as a means of reaching our final destination(终点). We don’t take time to truly appreciate(感激) where we are today and all the great things we already have in our lives. We should focus our attention on the journey and not on the destination, or we will miss the beautiful scenery along the way.
Let’s use our job as an example. Now most of us want a promotion. We have plans to become the manager or general manager in our companies. Unfortunately, most of us will never reach the goal, but will watch others achieve our goal instead.
What we should be doing is focusing on the job we are currently in now. Forget where we want to get to and just focus on the present. You see, what we can control is our performance in our current job. We can decide to be the best we possibly can in our current job. Now this may mean further education to have the skills we currently do not have. It may mean working harder to produce better results than our colleagues(同事). It could simply be a change of attitude(态度), such as stopping complaining and becoming a more devoted and supportive employee. By doing our current job to the best of our abilities, we in fact give ourselves the best chance of promotion(晋升).
So the best thing for all of us to do to achieve our goals is to just focus on what we have and where we are now. Do the best and be the best we possibly can in our current situations, and we will give ourselves the very best chance of reaching our goals in the future. We have heard the old sayings and they are true: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” “Patience is a virtue(美德).” and so on.
Have patience, have appreciation for what we already have, and take time to help ourselves be the very best we can. Do these things and we will all reach our goals, but more importantly, we will enjoy our life every day.

Happy people are healthier; they get sick less often and live longer. They have more friends. They are more productive at work.
Happiness doesn’t come easy, but you can develop it with practice. A simple way to start developing happiness is by recognizing good things. For this, each evening, you can write down three things that went well and add some details about each, including how they made you feel, and why they happened. Also you can take a 20-minute walk and pay attention to the sights, sounds and smells you meet with. Each time you notice something positive; take time to think about why you enjoy it.
Another simple way to develop happiness is to find meaning and purpose. For example, look out for whatever makes your life meaningful. We can also develop happiness by fostering(培养) a sense of purpose, and here is one way to do that. You imagine for 15 minutes an ideal future in which everything is going as well as possible, from your family and personal life to your studies and health. This exercise motivates(激励) you to make changes, rather than reminding you — how imperfect and meaningless your life is now.
In addition, you can develop happiness by putting more time and attention you’re your strengths. Each day for a week, choose one strong point and make a plan to use it in a different way. You can focus on the same strength for a week or work on different strengths each day. At the end of the week, synthesize(综合) the experience by writing about what you did, how those exercise made you feel, and what you learned. This exercise will help you feel happier and less sad.
Lastly, connecting with people around you is also one of the surest ways to happiness. To achieve this, you just need to help a friend or do something for your family. You can also do something for those who you don’t know. In this way, you can surely achieve happiness.

Members of an international organization are called the Global Greeters. They offer travelers the chance to get to know a city as well as local people do.
Unlike the professional guides(专业导游), the volunteer greeters act more like neighbours. They take visitors to visit the city–either on foot or public traffic—to discover favourite neighbourhoods, cafes and parks.
All the programs work a little differently, but the basics(基本项目) are the same. The tours are free and last anywhere for two or four hours. Volunteers can be all ages, and their ages and interests try to match the travelers.
New York City(USA)
Big Apple Greeter is the pioneer “welcome visitor” program founded in 1992 by New Yorker Lynn Brooks. More than 300 volunteers now can welcome guests from all over the world in 22 languages. Greeters explain the New York City subway and bus systems and show guests around one or more of their favourite neighbourhoods. Like many greeter organizations, Big Apple accepts online donations to help with its daily costs.
Houston(USA)
Houston Greeters will organize activities such as golf, biking or an outing to an Astros game(太空人队的比赛). Another activity is to arrange a tour in need of a particular interest.
Chicago(USA)
Chicago Greeters help visitors visit one of the city’s many famous neighbourhoods. The group organizes walks through Ukrainian Village on the Near North Side and Andersonville, home to Scandinavian restaurants and shops and Middle Eastern bakeries. Guides will also organize tours around themes such as fashion, film or public art.

July 16th was a bad day for Arthur Johnson. In the morning, he set off from his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays, and he decided to visit his friends at Las Vegas. Then he hoped to go fishing at Lake Mead.
Johnson’s troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car broke down and he tried to repair it, but he failed. He telephoned a workshop to ask it to send a tow truck (拖车) to pull the car away and repair it.
When waiting for the tow truck, he fell asleep. While he was sleeping, a tow truck arrived from San Pedro (the nearest town) and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody had stolen his car. Unwillingly, he started to walk back towards San Pedro, but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert.
Johnson looked like a man wanted in California for robbery, so the police kept him at San Pedro for the night. The next day, Johnson’s friends came from California. They proved that Johnson was a harmless salesman, so they let him go.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track(监测) your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush in a right way and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing.” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other apps on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters(怪物) among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace(代替) the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

Parents are the most generous people on Earth. However, we often fail to thank them for their efforts and love. And by the time we realize this, it’s too late. So don’t wait for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day to say sweet things to your parents.
“I miss you all the time.” Although you are busy, don’t forget to call your parents and tell them how much you miss them when they are not around.
“I thank you for all your efforts.” Maybe you haven’t thanked them in words, but you surely did it in your mind. Hug(拥抱) them and tell them how much you thank them for their efforts. You can’t possibly give back everything they’ve done for you, but this small act will make them feel special.
“I’m sorry.” You might have said things that hurt them deeply, but they still believe in you and continue to shower their love on you. You may want to go back in time and make everything right. But since that can’t happen, all you can do is say sorry from the bottom of your heart.
“Thank you for making me what I’m today.” You can never thank them enough for this. They’ve always been your strength to move forward in life. They have taught you all the small and big things about life. Let them know they are the real heroes in your life.
“You are great role models.” Your parents have been great role models and you should always respect them. They always encourage you to work hard and become a successful man in life. Even though you may have lost in a race or failed an exam, they were and still are your number one fans.

One of the most powerful tools you can use to improve your reading comprehension is mind mapping. It is possible to create maps by simply using a pen and paper.
The first step is to draw a circle or box at the center of the page. Inside your shape write down the main idea that your mind map will focus upon. For example, if you were creating a mind map about the geography of the United States, then you would write down “the geography of the United States” in the middle of your page inside your circle.
Next you draw branches from your central idea. Much like a tree grows branches. Simply draw a line moving away from the central theme. In the case of the geography of the United States, you would probably draw 50 lines. Each line represents one of 50 states. These are the main categories(分类) with your primary concept(概念).
Each of lines can then have branches off of each. These would represent the main example under each category. For example, under the line titled, “Texas,” you would find lines called Austin, Houston, and Dallas, you might draw a series of lines to represent some of its main sections like “South Dallas” and “Highland Park”. You continue to draw your mind map much like the structure of branches on a tree.
Mind map helps improve your comprehension because they enable you to quickly see relationships between main ideas, categories, examples, and details that might otherwise be missed if you use more traditional note taking strategies(策略).
