He has millions of students from all around the world. They listen to his classes online but never see his face on the screen. Salman Khan, 39, from the US, is the founder of the learning website Khan Academy.
Unlike other online courses that film teachers giving classes, Khan’s videos only use his voice and a digital (数码的) blackboard for writing. He says he doesn’t want a human face to distract students. Khan also makes his classes as short as 10 to 15 minutes so students don’t lose interest. They can also earn (获得) points from taking these classes.
These kinds of special courses make Khan Academy one of the world’s most popular online education websites. The courses are translated into more than 36 different languages including Chinese. About 80 teachers from the world’s top universities are now also teaching on the website. But all this started nine years ago with just one man-Salman Khan.
In 2006, Khan made homemade videos to help his seventh grade cousin with math. He posted the videos online and got thousands of views. This encouraged Khan to make more videos and create his own website Khan Academy.
As a Bangladeshi-American (孟加拉裔美国人), Khan understands that many kids, especially those in developing countries, cannot get a good education. He himself has three degrees (学位) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one from Harvard. He wants to use his knowledge to help more people. Thus, his courses are all offered for free.“Our mission is to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere,” he said.
Khan’s website has not only become very popular worldwide but has also won a lot of respect. Even Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is one of his fans. Gates donated over $1.5 million (9.6 million yuan) to support Khan and named him the “teacher to the world”.

I started listening to the stories in English about different people’s lives in order to improve my English listening.
At first, I downloaded (下载) in my iPad very short stories. They were about one or two minutes long. But I quickly became bored of the same old topics and speakers. Then someone told me that there were free audio (音频) books. I was surprised because I knew that it was still difficult for me to listen to long passages. However, at that moment I suddenly realized that not so long ago I had read several wonderful stories by Somerset Maugham in Russian. And it would be a great idea to try listening to them in English, So, as I knew the ideas of those stories, it would be easier for me to understand these stories 69. ______ listening. I have been listening to Maugham’s works for one week every day while walking to college. I like these clever stories. In my opinion. it is a very useful way to improve my listening. Usually, students are not encouraged to run or jump around in the corridor (走廊). However, students in a British grammar school really enjoy running on the corridor tiles (瓷砖) and their teachers even encourage them to do that.
Why? It is because the corridor was built with special kinetic (动能的) tiles. When students jump on the tiles, electricity will be generated ( 产生). After one year, the electricity generated from the tiles can fully charge 853 mobile phones or power(供电) an electric car to drive seven miles. It’s amazing, isn’t it?
The corridor tiles are really a brilliant invention. Students can not only play on the corridor, but also help power the lights in their school corridors and other devices ( 设备) in their classrooms. Besides, this is a good way to teach students to be creative. They will be inspired to be scientists, inventors and engineers in the future to find clean energy for all humans.
The inventor of the magic corridor tiles is Laurence Kemball-Cook. He was once a student in this school. Now, he is CEO of his own company. The corridor tiles are not Laurence’s only invention.
