The store was closing for the night. Young Alfred Higgins, the shop assistant, was ready to go home. Mr. Carr stared at him and said, “Hold on, Alfred. Maybe you’d be good enough to take the things out of your pockets and leave them here before you go.” Alfred’s face got red. After a few seconds, he took out what he had stolen. Mr. Carr said, “Maybe I should call your mother and let her know I’m going to have to put you in prison.”
Alfred thought his mother would come rushing in, eyes burning with anger. But, to his surprise, she arrived wearing a smile. “Hello, I’m Alfred’s mother. Is he in trouble?” she said. Mr. Carr was surprised, too. He had expected Alfred’s mother to come in nervously, shaking with fear, asking with wet eyes for a pardon for her son. But no, she was calm, quiet and pleasant and was making Mr. Carr feel guilty. Soon Mr. Carr was shaking his head in agreement with what she was saying. “You are right” he said, “Sometimes, a little good advice is the best thing for a boy at certain times in his life, and it often takes the youth long time to get sense into their heads.” And he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins’s hand.
Back home, without even looking at Alfred, the mother said, “You are a bad luck. It is one thing after another, always has been. Why do you stand there so stupidly? Go to bed. “In his bedroom, Alfred just took pride in his mother’s strength. He felt he must tell her how great she was. As he got to the kitchen, he was shocked by what he saw. His mother was lifting the tea cup, her hand shook, and her face became a frightened, broken one. It was no longer cool, bright as he saw earlier in the store. With her lips moving nervously, she looked so old.
Alfred watched his mother and he wanted to cry. He realized all the troubles he brought to his mother. It seemed that this was the first time he had ever really seen his mother, especially shaking hands and the deep lines of worry in her gray face. He knew his youth coming to an end.
1.Mr. Carr felt guilty because ________.
A.he mistook Alfred as the real thief
B.he thought he was over-excited
C.he had called the police before Alfred could explain Higgins probably said to Mr. Carr
D.Alfred’s mother appeared polite and gentle
2.Mrs. Higgins probably said “________” to Mr. Carr.
A.As you know, he is just a kid.
B.You know, it takes time for a youth to truly grow.
C.How can you treat my son like that!
D.If he is in jail, it won’t do you any good, either.
3.The phrase “his mother’s strength” refers to Mrs. Higgins’s ________.
A.trust to her son Alfred B.attitude (态度) towards laws
C.calmness and communicating skills D.greatness as a woman
4.Which of the following is TRUE ?
A.Alfred’s mother cared for his future but never made him know of it.
B.Alfred would never recognize his mistakes.
C.Alfred’s mother felt nervous about getting old.
D.Alfred was unlucky to be caught by the police.
5.After the incident, young Alfred would probably ________.
A.learn to protect his mother B.be more proud of his mother

One evening as I was leaving the store, I noticed a man with a very old sleeping bag going through the garbage can nearby. He pulled out fast food trash bags and inspected all that was in the thrown-away bags, but he never stopped anyone to beg for money or anything else as they entered or left my store. After he went through the entire trash can, he carefully cleaned up the area and wrapped up the food he found in the dirty hamburger wrapper. My heart literally hurt for him.
I decided to help him. I got out of my car and asked him if I could buy him something to eat. He thanked and followed me to the fast food place around the block. I bought him the biggest meal they had on the menu. He didn't ask for anything and the only request was a big glass of hot sweet tea to go with his meal. When I brought him the food, he was so thankful. He told me how much he appreciated the meal.
I wanted to give him some money. He shook his head. I asked him if I could buy a few meals and put it on a gift card for him. He agreed.
As I handed him the gift card, he broke down crying. He told me that he prayed for me today. I wasn't sure what he meant (I was guessing he was praying for me for what I did for him) so I thanked him.
“NO, I prayed that God would send someone to buy me a hot meal today … and he sent you!” Tears traced down his checks.
I didn't know what to say… I always pray over my food, but I've never prayed for a meal. I've never doubted that I wouldn’t be able to eat …Tears began to fill my eyes. Oh my…how blessed am I…Maybe God used me to answer this man’s prayer.
Everybody has a story though I didn't know his, but I had done what God wanted me to. God put him in my path …I knew he did. I took him to my office.
1.Perhaps the man the writer saw outside his store was a________
A. street lover B. beggar C. hamburger lover D. homeless man

A. A nice lonely person with a sleeping bag
B. A lonely, serious person with a trash bag
C. A polite, careful person with few words
D. A friendly, careful person with little money
3.Why did the man break down crying when the writer gave him the gift card?
A. He wanted to have some hot meals. B. He could have a new sleeping bag.
C. He had finally talked to God. D. He finally got what he needed.
4.What could probably happen in the writer’s office?
A. The writer asked the man to pray for him.
B. The writer invited the man to work in his store.
C. The writer gave the man another big hot meal.
D. The writer gave the man some money

If you go shopping in any toy store, you can see clearly the different games and toys for boys and girls: there are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls; and dark-colored cars, guns, and soldiers for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys. In fact, it is difficult to buy a toy for a girl that is not pink.
Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are captivated about the color. According to some scientists, this happens for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink. Also, many parents think their little daughter looks cute in pink. Sue Palmer says that girls at this age cannot make proper decisions by themselves, but the pink can affect (影响) the choices and the decisions they will make in the future.
Some parents are worried, too, for example, Vanessa Holburn, thirty-two, who has two girls under the age of four. Their bedrooms are a sea of pink and Vanessa is not happy. “Pink says that you are soft and gentle. Blue says that you are strong and powerful. I want my daughters to be strong and powerful. I’m worried that pink will not help them with that,” she says.
But not everyone thinks there’s something wrong with pink. Grayson Turner is a father of three girls and he isn’t worried at all. “People forget that things change all the time,” he says. “My girls used to love pink when they were little, but as they get older, they change.” Turner explains that his twelve-year-old daughter never wears pink clothes anymore. “This love of pink is just a fashion and all fashions change,” he adds. “It’s only since the 1940s that people have stated dressing girls — — in pink before that it was a color for boys.”
1.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
2.The underlined phrase “are captivated about ” in Paragraph 2 probably means .
A.are afraid of B.are tired of
C.are crazy about D.are nervous about
3.According to Grayson Turner, .
A.all little kids love the color pink
B.his girls now prefer the color blue
C.pink has always been a color for girls
D.parents needn’t worry about pink toys
4.The purpose of this passage is to .
A.explain why girls are crazy about the color pink
B.make parents less worried about the color pink
C.encourage girls to give up playing with pink toys
D.show people’s different opinions about the color pink
