Nearly all kids have had the same experience. They are eating in a restaurant with their parents. They finished the spaghetti minutes ago. Now, they are bored. Their little brother is kicking them under the table. He is also complaining about the desserts(餐后甜点). Yet their parents are still eating and talking…and talking…and talking.
“Be patient.” One parent says. “We’ll have dessert soon.”
All kids know what happens next. After dessert, their parents drink coffee. Then they talk some more. Again, the children must wait. They have been in school all day and would rather be running and playing. Instead, they must sit in a chair and stare at a wall.
Going to a restaurant doesn’t have to be this way. Many restaurants say they are “family-friendly”. Family restaurants, such as fast-food restaurants should play areas for children. At these restaurants, almost every play area is a big room full of climbing equipment. The room is usually, packed with happy kids. Parents can eat while the children play. Everyone is happy.
The real problem begins when families want to eat a fancier meal(大餐). The parents don’t want to hurry through the meal but talk to each other. They do not have bored children pestering(烦扰) them about leaving. That’s no fun for kids either. For them, going to a nicer restaurant means just one thing: sit still and be quiet.
On family blogs across the Web, dozens of parents post the same question all the time; are there any nicer restaurants with play areas for kids? Research shows that some nicer restaurants do have play areas. In warmer cities, it is easier for restaurants to build play areas outside. For example, at one restaurant kids can sail tiny little motor boats in a small, shallow pond. Parents can sit on a beautiful yard and watch the kids play. Some nicer restaurants even have indoor play areas. Research also shows that these restaurants serve more than just burgers, chickens and fries.
So, it’s possible for a restaurant to provide both food and a place where kids can play. These restaurants seem to be popular, too. For some, families must have reservation days in advance. For others, families might be forced to wait in long lines. Clearly, quality food and safe play areas are both good for business.
1.Why do children get unhappy at the restaurant?
A. Because they can’t join in their parents’ talk.
B. Because the dessert isn’t served in time.
C. Because they can do nothing but wait.
D. Because the food there isn’t delicious.
2.What is the real problem mentioned in the passage?
A. Children don’t like eating fancier food.
B. Not many nicer restaurants provide play areas.
C. Parents don’t trouble to comfort their bored kids.
D. People have to wait for seats in nicer restaurants.
3.What conclusion can we draw from the research?
A. It’s common for nicer restaurants to provide good food and play areas.
B. Building play areas is more difficult for restaurants in colder cities.
C. Serving more kinds of foods may help restaurants to make more money.
D. It’s possible for restaurants to find a balance to make both happy.
4.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. Cities need to help develop restaurant business.
B. Children are supposed to be much more patient.
C. Restaurants are supposed to give kids some space.
D. Parents need to care more about their kids when eating.

Many kids all over the world are reading Harry Potter books in school. But some parents think their children shouldn't be able to find those and other books in school libraries. Should school libraries keep books that some parents don't approve of?Should they take those books off the bookcases?
All over the USA, schools are wrestling with those questions. Read these arguments. Then decide for yourself.
Yes! Some Books Should Be Banned from School Libraries!
Many parents believe that there should be certain limits(限定). Books that include violence(暴力)or bad words shouldn't be in schools. Some parents think Harry Potter books have no place in school libraries because they talk about wizards and magic.
Most parents know what's good for kids. They have a right to decide which books should or should not be in school libraries.
Books should be checked before they are put in schools. Is this a good book for kids to read?
Is it full of violence? Does it have bad words or ideas kids shouldn't learn about? If a book is not good for all kids, it should not be in a school library.
No! Books Should Not Be Banned from School Libraries!
Why should a few parents stop all kids from reading stories like Harry Potter?
"Parents should decide what their own kids read," said Natalie Nicole, of Denver, Colorado.
Many experts say that it's the parents' job, not the school's job, to check out what their kids are reading. If they don't like a book, they should not let their kids read it.
Many schools let kids borrow certain books if they have a signed(签名的)paper from their parents. That works fine. A parent doesn't sign the paper if he or she doesn't want the child to read the book. Other kids can read the book if they are allowed.
Some books are not OK for all kids to read. But if more adults were careful about what their own kids read, they wouldn't have to ban books from the library.

In the eyes of many foreigners , Chinese are the best hosts(主人)and the worst guests in the world. They’re not really bad guests , but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western countries , it appears they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude(粗鲁的)in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China , guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home , there is always fruit on the table for me , and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west , generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother , a very kind elderly Chinese lady , doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house , as a non-smoker , I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly , but I must realize that in China , to be a good host , she must not do that. In most North American homes , if you are a guest , and the hosts are not smokers , you should not smoke in their house. At the very least , you could ask , “ Is it OK if I smoke?” But , don’t be surprised if they say , “ No , you can’t smoke. ” In our culture , if you smoke in their home , you are a bad guest , but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house , they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese , so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However , giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So , if you invite international guests to your home , don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.
In China , you probably won’t need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host , and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house , try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.

After my husband died from a heart attack, my world changed all in a sudden. I just put all my effort into making a living, caring for the children and just keeping my head above water.
I was lucky to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone, and in fact I was uncomfortable. Every unusual noise and any late-night phone call would fill me with fear. I felt unbelievably alone.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big beautiful German shepherd (牧羊犬) on our doorstep. I became worried. Where did this dog come from? Was it safe to let the children play with a strange dog? Finally I let him sleep in the basement(地下室)until the next day, when we could search around the neighborhood for his owner. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.
The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results. Saturday night he was still with us and I planned to take the children on a picnic without German. But we were surprised to see him jumping onto the hood (引擎盖)and looking directly into my eyes. No way was he going to be left behind. So he stayed again Sunday night. Monday morning I let him out for a run while the children got ready for school. He didn’t come back till the next Friday evening. And again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
This repeated every weekend for almost 10 months. Each week, between German’s visits, I grew a little stronger and braver; every weekend I enjoyed his company(陪伴). Then one Monday morning we patted his head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time. He never came back.
I think of him often. He came when I needed him the most and stayed until I was strong enough to go on alone. I believe German was sent because he was needed, and because no matter how sad and alone we feel, somehow, somewhere, someone knows and cares.

2.What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A.At last the writer came to realize who German’s owner was.
B.Being strong enough, the writer didn’t miss German any more.
C.German had no choice but to come to the writer’s house on weekends.
D.The writer believes that German was sent to her because she was alone.
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Homeless Dog B.We Are Not Alone
C.Every Dog Has Its Day D.German, Our Pet Dog
