Finally, a huge wall of ice blocked our plan. Soon the Nautilus itself was stuck in the ice. The Nautilus dived to about eight hundred meters and travelled quickly under the icecap. Conseil and I looked for fish, but there were none. We travelled under the ice for two days.

On the third day, we rushed onto the deck to see water and a small island. The crew caught some fish in their nets and we ate some for dinner. Captain studied his instruments and announced we were at the South Pole. We all cheered. Then the Nautilus dived and began its return voyage. Suddenly I felt a shock. The Nautilus had stopped moving and was leaning to one side. It was stuck under an iceberg. Captain Nemo was clearly worried. We were in a kind of tunnel with ice above and below us. Both ends of the tunnel were blocked with more ice. Captain Nemo told us there were two ways of dying in that situation. We had enough air for two days, but we might be crushed before that. Captain Nemo and his crew used a long pole and found we were lying on ten meters of ice.

The men began to cut the ice under Nautilus. It would take five nights and four days to remove enough ice to free the Nautilus. However, there was only enough air for two days.
