When Jenny Brown, 10, developed bone cancer, her right leg below the knee was cut off to save her life. During the treatment, Jenny had a cat named Boogie, which seldom left her side as she got used to life with a prosthetic(义肢) leg. “My relationship with Boogie showed me animals think, feel, and suffer as we do,” says Jenny, now 44.
In 1994, Jenny graduated from college and began her film career in television. She also volunteered for animal rights groups. In 2002, having learned about some shocking mistreatment of farm animals, she knew she needed to help them. A year later, Jenny gave up her job to work as an animal caregiver at Farm Sanctuary(农场动物庇护所).
The next year, she opened the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization aiming to rescue farm animals and help them recover. It gives tours of the farm from April to October and asks for volunteers and support through www.woodstockfarm.sanctuary.org. The farm website describe the backstory and the character of each of the animals living there.
In September, 2016, the sanctuary was moved to a new farm, which has an equipped kitchen, a dining hall and other buildings in High Falls, New York. The new place has allowed her team of 17 to host vegan(素食的) cooking classes and a kids’ camp.
“People love spending time with the animals.” says Jenny. “There’s a magic that happens here.”
1.What lesson did Jenny learn from Boogie?
2.When did Jenny start the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary?
3.How can people find the backstory of animals on the farm?
4.What are the newly-offered activities on Jenny’s farm?

One woman in nine will develop breast cancer (乳腺癌) over her lifetime. However, a healthy diet can reduce your risk of developing the disease by 40 to 60 percent.
Generally speaking, eating more vegetables can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer by 60 percent. Vegetables like cabbage are rich in fiber (纤维), can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. To get the most from their goodness, it's recommended that you eat at least three to four cups of these vegetables per week.
It's the oleic acid (油酸) contained in olive oil. American scientists conducting laboratory research have observed that oleic acid has a beneficial effect on breast cancer cells. Olive oil is the richest source of this acid, so whenever possible, use it in place of butter.
Eating fruit is another excellent way to help prevent the development of breast cancer. In fact, women who do eat fruit are six percent less likely to develop the disease. The American Institute for Cancer Research considers berries (浆果类) (blueberries, strawberries, etc.) to be powerful for breast cancer fighters.
It's the lycopene (番茄红素), found in great quantities in tomatoes, that can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. The lycopene found in canned tomatoes is more readily absorbed by the body than that contained in fresh ones, so add tomato juice, paste, and sauce to your diet.
As a result of various studies, the American Institute for Cancer Research has concluded that components (成分) found in green tea can help halt the development of cancerous tumours (瘤) and even prevent them from appearing in the first place. Three cups a day will help you get the benefits of green tea.

One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl(珍珠) necklace priced at $2.50. "No, that's okay," her father said and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. "God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams."
Several days later, when Jenny's father came in to read her a story, Jenny was sitting on her bed and her lip was trembling." Here, Daddy," she said, and held out her hand. She opened it and her beloved pearl necklace was inside. She let it slip into her father's hand.
With one hand her father held the plastic pearls and the other he pulled out of his pocket a blue velvet (天鹅绒) box. Inside of the box were real, genuine, beautiful pearls. He had had them all along. He was waiting for Jenny to give up the cheap stuff so he could give her the real thing.

Health experts are calling for action to expand cancer care and control in the developing world. A medical research paper says cancer was once thought of as a problem mostly in the developed world. But now cancer is a leading cause of death and disability in poor countries as well. Experts from Harvard University and other organizations urge the international community to fight cancer aggressively, saying it should be fought in the way HIV/AIDS has been fought in Africa.
Cancer kills more than 7.5 million people a year worldwide. Almost two-thirds are in low-income and middle-income countries.
They discover cancer dills more people in developing countries than AIDS, tuberculosis (肺结核) and malaria (疟疾) combined. But the world spends only 5% of its cancer resources in those countries.
Felicia Knaul from Harvard Medical School was one of the authors of the paper. She was in Mexico when she was found to have breast cancer. She received treatment there and her experience showed her the sharp difference between the rich and the poor in treating breast cancer.
Felicia Knaul says, “And we are seeing how this is attacking young women. It’s the number two cause of death in Mexico for women thirty to fifty-four. All over the developing world, it’s the number one cancer-related death among young women. I think we have to again say that there is much more we could do about it than we are doing about it.”
Professor Knalul met community health workers during her work in developing countries. They were an important part of efforts to reduce deaths from the cancer. They were able to persuade people to get tested to prevent the illness. The experts say cancer care does not have to be costly. For example, patients can be treated with lower-cost drugs.
