Last summer, as part of my high school graduation project, I volunteered at Saunders House nursing home .I choose this experience because it was something that I had never done before and I wanted to lend a helping hand.At first it was challenging because I was extremely shy. My goal in volunteering was to bring a smile to the residents(住客) by doing different activities from word games to playing chess. I feel as if I had accomplished that goal.
At the nursing home, I did a lot of different activities with the residents ranging from Jeopardy to Wheel of Fortune. One of my favorites was a word game where I would write a ten -letter word on the board and the residents would try to come up with as many smaller words as possible. I could tell that it was one of their favorite games because they always seemed to be so enthusiastic when they played.I also transported residents to and from their rooms when they needed help; and whenever it was a nice day out, I would take them outside to get some fresh air and relax. On Saturday mornings, I would deliver the newspaper to the residents and on Sundays, I assisted with morning church services.
The most unforgettable part of this experience was when I had one-on-one conversations with the residents. It was incredible how many great stories they had to tell. Their stories were so interesting and the experience was unforgettable for me .

As graduation day approached, excitement increased. Being out of high school meant I was finally coming of age(成人).Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions, doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder and it meant going to school with boys-a welcome change coming from an all-girl high school.
There was never any question in my mind that I would go to a college away from home. My mother's idea, on the other hand, was just the opposite. Trying her best not to force her preferences on me, she would subtly ask whether I had considered particular schools, all of which happened to be located in or near my hometown of Chicago. Once it was established that, as long as it was financially affordable, I would be going away anyway, my family's perspective changed. Their concern shifted from whether I was going away to how far. The schools I was considering on the East Coast suddenly looked much more attractive than those in California.
But which college I would attend was just one of what seemed like a never-ending list of unknown! What would college be like? Would the other students like me? Would I make friends easily? Would I miss my family so much that I wouldn't be able to stand it? And what about the work --- would I be able to keep up? (Being an A student in high school seemed to offer little assurance that I would be able to survive college.) What if the college I selected turned out to be a horrible mistake? Would I be able to transfer to another school?
The panic set in. My feelings took a 180-degree turn. I really didn't want to leave high school at all, and it was questionable whether I wanted to grow up after all. It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year; I didn't enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again.
Despite months of expectation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day. As the familiar must of ''Pomp and Circumstance'' echoed in the background, I looked around at the other students in white caps and gowns as we solemnly(庄严地) filed into the auditorium(礼堂). Tears welled up uncontrollably in my eyes, and I was consumed by a rush of sadness. As if in a daze, I rose from my seat when I heard my name called and slowly crossed the stage to receive my diploma(毕业证书). As I reached out my hand, I knew that I was reaching not just for a piece of paper but for a brand-new life. Exciting as the prospect of a new life seemed, it wasn't easy saying goodbye to the old ones --- the familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would even miss that chemistry class I wasn't particularly fond of and the long commute each day between home and school that I hated. Good or bad, it was what I knew.
That September, I was fortunate to attend a wonderful university in Providence, Rhode Island. I needn't have worried about liking it. My years there turned out to be some of the best years of my life. And as for friends, I still treasure some of the friendships I formed there today. Years later, financial difficulties forced my high school to close its doors for good. Although going back is impossible, it's comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time.

In my senior year of high school, I got a part-time job working at the local coffee shop. One miserable rainy day, Hank, one of my regular customers came in looking depressed and defeated. My co-worker and I asked what the problem was and if we could help, but he said he wouldn’t want to tell any details. He just felt like going into bed, pulling the sheet up over his head, and staying there for a few years, and I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn't ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favorite type of doughnut (油炸圈饼).
“It's on me,”I told him.”Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before turning around and heading back out into the rain.
The next evening, when I was in the middle of making coffee, Hank drove up to the window. But instead of ordering anything, he handed me a single pink rose and a little note. I waited until I saw his Jeep leave the parking lot, then I ran to the back of the shop and read the note. It read:
Christine,
Thanks for cheering me up yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone that’s genuinely sweet, warm and thoughtful and unselfish. Please don't change your ways because I truly believe that you will succeed. Have a great day!
Hank

Braxton Moral walked across the stage at his high school in Ulysses, Kansas, as a graduate. Soon after that, the 17-year-old marked another milestone(里程碑): receiving his degree from Harvard University.
Moral's parents got him admitted to the world-famous university when he was just 11. "My parents noticed I was bored in school and needed something to encourage growth, so they ended up finding the Harvard Extension School," he said.
"Most courses can be taken online, but Extension School students also must earn 16 credit(学分) hours in person in the school in Cambridge, Massachusetts," said Moral.
Studying for both high school and Harvard at the same time wasn't easy. But officials in his high school took a lot of the work off, allowing Moral to spend a few hours each day working on Harvard's coursework.
Moral has always been drawn to law and politics, and he's now hoping to go to law school. "I am, of course, excited to end this stage of my life and hungry to begin the next," he said.

"Something my mom, sister and I noticed early on was his memory. That's one of the things that make him unbelievable. I went shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter’s high school graduation half a year ago. To my horror, I could only fit into a size 20.
Being overweight most of my adult life, I always had very little self-confidence. Wearing a dress I didn’t like to such an important event was enough to make me look for help. Thankfully, a friend of mine was attending Weight Watchers meetings, and I noticed her great progress. Her success inspired me to give it a try. I joined Weight Watchers, attended their meetings and started following their Weight-Loss System.
I focused on the plan with determination and never missed a weekly meeting! I discovered that I enjoyed the benefits of having the help and support of others. I also read the weekly online e-newsletter and was inspired by the stories, recipes and information offered there, I also read magazines produced by Weight Watchers, which have great tips and new ideas in each issue.
It’s hard for me to even remember the person I was before my amazing change. I didn’t walk anywhere and couldn’t wash my car or walk my dog. Today I do these simple tasks without even thinking about them. But the change didn’t happen overnight. I had to exercise with patience and perseverance(坚持). I decided to take it one day at a time and stick with if for good.

高一英语阅读理解简单题查看答案及解析
My husband came across the program from his father's high school graduation 90 years ago. It was the Class of 1928 and their class motto (格言)was, "Build for character, not for fame. "
I'm pretty sure society has done quite the opposite to that one. These days, we have people who are famous for simply being famous. They haven't done anything particularly impressive, but they do take great selfies (自拍照). We are all crazy about fame these days, mainly thanks to social media. All we want is for people to follow us, friend us, like us or share our posts. We are nearly mad about fame.
"Build for character, not for fame. ” is based on the belief that one is looking up and ahead. That's an encouraging idea, especially today, when most of us have our heads down, looking at the screens of our smartphones. Looking ahead and building for character takes thought and intentionality (意向性). One can be intentional in building for fame as well, but fame often relies heavily on the right timing and connections as well as the creation of a base of fans and supporters. Character isn’t decided by the ideas of others. Character is built with self-discipline (自律)and a willingness to learn from difficulties. Character grows inside and needs no praise.
Fame depends on people looking at you, while character is who you are when no one is looking. Fame often comes with jealousy (嫉妒)--a feeling that time is running out or that someone better than you is coming to steal your fans. Character is marked by feeling fulfilled and being generous . There is satisfaction that comes with the reward of achievements, but at the same time, good character willingly holds the door open for others who are also hoping to achieve.
This graduation season, speakers will tell new graduates to get out there and build a better world. The best way is to build character, the kind that runs deep and can carry you through lifers storms. Build character with courage, justice (公正) and strength. Build character by respecting yourself and others . Build character with kindness, hope and love. Build for character and you will build a better world .
1.What does the author think of people nowadays?
A.They're mad about achievements.
B.They want to be famous very much.
C.They're trying to build for character.
D.They like doing everything impressive.
2.What does “ building for character" require people to do?
A.Connect with others at the right time.
B.Mind their behavior when being looked at.
C.Behave themselves and learn from hardships readily .
D.Look ahead and accept other people's advice willingly.
3.The underlined word "fulfilled" in Paragraph 4 probably means “________".
A.content B.confident
C.famous D.comfortable
4.Why does the author value "building for character”?
A.It inspires people to achieve more.
B.It enables us to build a better world.
C.It allows graduates to get a good job.
D.It helps us again respect from other people.

Mrs. Obama spoke to the graduates of Martin Luther King Jr. High School on Saturday in her only high school commencement(毕业典礼)speech this year. The ceremony took place in the gymnasium of Tennessee State University.
The first lady told the 170 graduates that she spent too much of her time in college focusing on academe achievements. While her success in college and law school led to a good job, she said, she ended up focusing on public service. “My message to you today is that don’t waste a minute living someone else’s dream,” she said. “It takes a lot of real work to discover what brings you joy and you won’t find what you love simply by checking mailboxes or surfing the net.”
