I talk to her a lot, and hope to improve her knowledge. So far she can understand and speak 13, 000 different sentences in English and Japanese, so she’s already fairly intelligent. Aiko recognises faces and says hello when any of my family comes around to visit. She helps me pick what to have for dinner and knows what drinks I like. She even helps me with directions when we're going somewhere. When I need to do my accounts, Aiko does all the maths. She is very patient and never complains. She doesn’t need holidays, food or rest and she will work almost 24 hours a day. She is the perfect woman.”

Johann Gutenberg, who worked as a goldsmith(金匠),took what has already been discovered, and created a small invention that changed history. He created a machine that allowed him to move small blocks of letters in such a way that written material could be printed and mass-produced. Few people could read before Johann Gutenberg made the invention, but once books became less expensive, more Europeans could read and write.
Block printing existed long before Gutenberg. The Chinese had been using wood blocks to print books as early as 868, but a new set of woodcuts(木刻印版) had to be made for each book. Producing one book was not easy; producing all kinds of books was more difficult.
Writing ink dates from about 2500 BC in Egypt and China. Johann Gutenberg use an oil-base printing ink that would last longer than other inks used in his time. We don’t know much about Gutenberg because he was not famous during his lifetime. He was born in Germany about 1400. In 1448, Gutenberg developed signatures for each number, letter, and punctuation mark(标点符号). He then built the molds (模型) to hold the signatures in place. Johann Gutenberg published the first mass-produced book: a 1,282 page Bible. To this day, more copies of the Bible have been printed the any other book.
Copies of Gutenberg’s invention spread throughout Europe, but the German goldsmith did not get rich from his invention. Some officials denounced the invention of printing because they feared that it would spread bad ideas. By 1500 there 1,700 printing presses in Europe. The presses had already produced about 20 million volumes of 40,000 different books.

I created a writing group at my school this year, and it has become a hit with all students who enjoy writing. Now students of the group make rapid progress in their writing. Let me share a few tips that you can use to start your own writing group.
Set up separate groups for different ability levels
You probably don’t want to mix a gifted eighth grader with a second grader who writes very little. In a larger school, you could have a beginner group, a more advanced group, and a publishing group. Members can move to more appropriate groups if they are not comfortable in the current one.
Advertise the group in different ways
Send advertisements home with students, and put an advertisement on the school website or in the school newsletter.
The first meeting should be very open
At the first meeting, you should tell the students that this group is all about them. It is not a class, not a grade and not a requirement. Then tell them what some other writing groups do, and ask what they would like to do.
Set up a time to meet once or twice a month
It is important that students bring their writing with them. The group could go in any direction: criticize each other’s work, read your writing aloud, read silently, publish your work in a booklet (小册子), play creativity games or do an online chat with a published author.
It will take a little while to find out what works best for your group
Search for creativity exercises and role plays. You might even be able to set up a special section of your school’s website just for your writing group.
1.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. introduce how to start up a writing group
B. offer some advice on how to teach writing
C. train highlevel students to start up a writing group
D. compare different tips on starting up a writing group
2.What does the underlined word “hit” probably mean?
A. problem B. test C. tool D. success
3.Which of the following is NOT the activity of a writing group?
A. Practice role plays.
B. Meet a published author.
C. Criticize each other’s work.
D. Play creativity games.

Do you know who made the ABC song? Some people say a man named Charles Bradlee created the song. He was the first person to say he owned it. That was in 1834. Bradlee called the song “The Schoolmaster”. A schoolmaster in an old name for a teacher. No one knows where it came from. But we do have some clues.
Sounds Like Another Song
The ABC song sounds the same as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. It has the same tune, or music. It sounds like “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, too. Try singing each song. Sing them in a row. You can hear for yourself! The tune was first printed in 1761. It didn’t have any words. No one knows who wrote it. Later, a woman wrote the words for “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. Her name was Jane Taylor. She lived in England. She wrote the words in 1806. Mozart was a very famous composer. He wrote a piece of music in 1785. It sounds a lot like the ABC song!
We Learn Better From Songs
When the ABC song first became popular, few children went to school. Most people did not learn how to read. They did not learn how to write, either. As time went on, this changed. More people needed to know how to read and write. More children started learning the ABC song. It helped them remember the letters.
Why do we sing the ABC song? We could just read it quietly. Or we could say it without singing. Why is the song partly important? The answer is related to how we learn. Children have always leaned from grown-ups. But 200 year ago, most people couldn’t read or write. Children had to remember things. They could not write down what they learned. They could not read about it later. So it was important to remember. Songs helped people remember. People sang song that told stories. They taught their children what they knew through songs.
So, no none really knows who made the ABC song. We do know that this song is popular today. Most children who learn to speak English will sing it. Then they will remember their letters!
1.How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By listing facts. B. By comparing.
C. By telling a story. D. By examining differences.
2.Who made the ABC song?
A. Charles Bradlee
B. Jane Taylor.
C. Mozart.
D. No one knows the answer exactly.
3.Why was making the alphabet into a song important?
A. Because the song was written by a famous music writer.
B. Because the song helps people remember the letters.
C. Because the song sounds like “Baa Baa Black Sheep”.
D. Because children always learn from grown-ups.
4.Why the Question “Who made the ABC song?” is used in the beginning?
A. To test the readers.
B. To introduce a topic.
C. To show the song is important.
D. To analyze the cause and effect.

When Albert Einstein was young, he was a quiet child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty in learning to read.
When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass (指南针). Albert was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle (针) always pointed in the same direction —the north. He asked his father and uncle what caused the needle to move.
Their answers were difficult for Albert to understand. Yet he spent a lot of time thinking about them. He said later that he felt something must be behind things.
Albert did not like school. The German schools of that time were not pleasant. Students couldn’t ask questions. Albert said he felt as if he were in prison.

Albert learned to love mathematics. He was studying the complex math of calculus (微积分学) while all his friends were still studying simple math. Instead of playing with friends he thought about things such as "What would happen if people could travel at the speed of light?".
Albert wanted to teach math and physics. He graduated with honors, but it was a pity that he could not get a teaching job.
