Many students have problems with vocabulary when preparing for tests. Here is some advice on how to memorize (记忆) new words. You can build up your English vocabulary with these methods.
Repeated encounters (反复遇见)
The usual way of “memorizing” new words is through repeating them while they’re still in your mind. However, simply repeating a word doesn’t seem to be useful. But the following way is helpful: repeated encounters. Words can be memorized more easily if they’ve been met at least seven times in your reading. So, read English magazines and newspaper from time to time.
Spacing and review
It’s necessary to make a plan of your memory work over a period of time. You’d better memorize words day by day instead of doing it in a single day. That’s why new vocabulary introduced in one lesson is reviewed in the next, and then in later lessons.
Use it or lose it
Putting words to use in interesting ways helps add them to your long-term memory. In a study of vocabulary learning, students who made up their own sentences with new words and read them aloud memorized them better than those who learned the words separately and silently. Besides, you can imagine a picture when memorizing a new word. That can help a lot.
Mix it up
Let’s face it — learning words can be really boring, but it doesn’t have to be. Thanks to the Internet, there are more interesting ways to get the job done. Try watching videos from English-speaking countries and copying the way they speak. You can even upload ( 上 传 ) your own videos and try becoming a star yourself.

Learning vocabulary doesn’t have to be boring
Many students have problems with vocabulary when preparing for tests like the SATs. Last week, TEENS offered advice on how to memorize new words. If you’re now familiar with those methods, why not try moving on to the next stage by using the following tips to build up your English vocabulary.
Repeated encounters (反复遇见)
The usual way of “memorizing” new material is through repeating it while it’s still in your mind. However, simply repeating a word seems to have little long-term effect.
But one kind of repetition is effective: repetition of encounters with a word. Words stand a good chance of being remembered if they’ve been met at least seven times in your reading, at intervals (相隔一段时间). So, read English magazines, newspapers, and websites regularly.
Spacing and review
It’s better to distribute (分配) memory work over a period of time rather than do it in a single session (一段时间). This is known as the “principle of distributed practice”, where new vocabulary introduced in one lesson is reviewed in the next, and then in later lessons.
Use it or lose it
Putting words to use in interesting ways helps add them to your long-term memory. In a study of vocabulary learning, students who made up their own sentences with new words and read them aloud remembered them better than those who learned the words separately and silently. Best of all, students were given the task of silently imagining a picture in their minds to go with a new word. So it might help if learners link words with a mental image.
Mix it up
Let’s face it — learning words can be really boring, but it doesn’t have to be. Thanks to the Internet, there are more interesting ways to get the job done. Try watching videos from English-speaking social media celebrities and copying the way they speak. You could even upload your own videos and try becoming a star yourself.

With the development of the television and the Internet, many people have changed their hobbies and the way they enjoy their spare time. Because of the television and the Internet, many people spend less time reading, the aim of this article is to give reasons why people should read just for pleasure. The reasons that I give you are quite simple: to improve your knowledge, to have more fun, to make your imagination fly, to find new ways to express your ideas, and to have a better understanding of life.
Firstly, you can improve your knowledge when you read. There are all kinds of good books to choose from. People who read more usually have a better idea at life than those who do not read often.
Secondly, you can have fun and increase your imagination by reading books. Children have very good imagination, so parents need to read lots of stories that feed their imagination. Adults should try to develop their imagination by reading books that make them think amazing things.
Finally, no matter how old you are, it can help you have a better understanding of life and express your ideas to others in a simple and correct way.
So I suggest that you read more. I know that many of us like to play on the Internet when we are free, but we could also not forget to read books. Try to choose good books at the beginning, and then I’m sure that you will never stop reading.
