I think about him every time I pass by a pink magnolia(木兰)tree in bloom(开花). My Irish granddaddy, tall and thin, bursting with energy and laughter, held a special place in my heart. He lived across the street with Grandma, and their home was open to us whenever we ran over to visit. We wouldn't go into their home to find him. however, we would run to the backyard where he would be working in his garden.
Flowers, vegetables—whatever he planted grew well. From early spring through late autumn, the backyard exploded with colors.
On the side of the yard grew two apple trees and a small pear tree. A high magnolia tree stood in the middle. Its shiny, dark green leaves and large pink flowers attracted the attention of all who saw it. Besides being beautiful, it was perfect for climbing, but I didn't know how to climb it!
My granddaddy wanted to teach me. He really tried. But I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get back down, or that I would get stuck high up in the tree, so I didn’t want to try.
Except that I did want to try. One early spring morning, granddaddy was standing on his porch (门廊)waiting for me when I walked outside. ''Come over here'' he said excitedly. ''The tree is blooming lollipops(棒棒糖) instead of flowers! ''
''What? '' I ran across to the backyard to see a wonderful sight. ''No pink magnolia flowers this year,'' he said sadly as he shook his head. They'll all turn brown and drop down. What a waste that will be. But this is the first year ever for our tree to bloom lollipops!”
He looked at me. ''Do you think you could climb up the tree— just to the lowest branch — and gather one or two? Then throw them down to me. I would love a lollipop!''

Three years ago. I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. The first people I called was my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic and she informed me that the bins had already been collected.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most treasured rings my mother’s wedding ring. Had it not been for my carelessness, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair.

The rickshaw wallah left soon after saying goodbye to my mother. All of us greeted my mother and asked her about her evening of shopping with much delight.
Then we began to help my mother prepare our dinner. My father came to help cut the meat; I helped wash the vegetables; we were talking and laughing. When dinner was ready, it was late in the evening, almost 9 p.m.

At midnight the sky became clearer and the stars grew brighter. It was so quiet. There was almost no wind-only the flames of our fire for company.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?”
I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

She said she accepted my apology, but I felt she was still angry with me.
Posting that picture was one of the worst decisions I had ever made.
