How about forgetting bad memories?
Can we forget bad memories? Someone might tell you that time is the only “cure”. But this might be not true.
Researchers at Canada's McGill University have tested a pill that can help you forget bad memories. They tested it on 60 people and found it to be useful.
All 60 people had experienced painful romantic relationships and wanted to forget them. In the study, they were asked to write about these bad memories. Then, they took a pill that is usually used to treat high blood pressure (血压). They then recalled their bad memories by reading what they wrote earlier. In the end, they talked about their feelings, saying that they were finally able to forget their bad experiences.
Dr. Alain Brunet, who led the study, believes that the pill can ease(缓解)the pain that bad memories bring. People can take it after bad things happen to them.
How did the pill do this? In fact, your memories change all the time. They’re like papers on your computer. Every time you recall and "open” the papers, you might happen to make some changes and "save" them. Researchers believe that the pill can stop something in the brain from "re-saving" these memories. This means some details of the memory are lost.
However, there are some ethical (伦理的)worries about this treatment. Some people might use it to forget things that they should be learning from, such as when they did a crime.
A11 of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past. I'm not sure we want to erase those memories, said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.
How do we form memories?
The part of our brain known as the hippocampus (海马体)is important for forming new memories. Scientists found it after studying a patient named Henry Molaison in the 1950s. After Molaison's hippocampus got hurt during an operation, he couldn't store new memories. But he could remember memories from before the operation. This means long-term memories are stored outside the hippocampus. Scientists believe they are stored in the neocortex(新皮质),which controls attention and planning.
1.The writing purpose of this passage is ________.
A.to introduce a new medical invention B.to describe the bad influence of the pill

A.cause the brain to fix memories B.recall what they wrote down before

Have you heard of the saying, “Elephants never forget”? We can know that elephants have good memories, But do you know monkeys have good memories, too?
Monkeys can recollect what they’ve seen, according to a science study. It offers clear evidence (证据) that monkeys have ability of memory like humans.
Scientists found out that monkeys can recall simple shapes from memory. They even can draw those shapes on a computer touch screen.
Scientists say that findings suggest that the memory of humans and monkeys is more similar than scientists knew. Monkeys can recall. Recall is necessary for planning and imagining, and can increase social behavior and other skills. By recalling, monkeys show an ability to remember things that are not present at the moment.
A scientist named Benjamin Basile said, “The ability of monkeys to recall these shapes suggests that they might be able to recollect other kinds of information that would be useful to them in the wild. They may be able to recollect the appearance of things they knew, what their favorite foods look like, or the path they would have to take to a pond.
The scientists say that the ability to recollect does not depend on language. The ability may have been present in our common ancestor (祖先) million years ago.
1.After reading the first paragraph, we can know ______.
A. only elephants have good memories
B. only monkeys have good memories
C. both elephants and monkeys have good memories
D. neither elephants nor monkeys have good memories
2.The underlined word “recollect” has the same meaning as the word “______”.
A. recall B. collect C. gather D. repeat
3.Which is the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Monkeys have the ability of memory like humans.
B. Monkeys can not draw shapes they saw on a computer touch screen.
C. Monkeys may be able to recall what their favorite food look like.
D. Monkeys may be able to recall the path they would have to take.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people -- all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars (伤痕).
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase, the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body producing chemicals that fix memories in the brain (大脑). So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of discussion. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can destroy people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare (噩梦). They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Different accidents can leave people with terrible wounds both in body and mind. Often they recall these experiences in their awful dreams.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a kind of medicine, which will help people forget bad memories. The medicine is designed to be taken soon after a scary experience. Everyone has a beautiful memory about school which is hard to forget. Among many things, relationships are the hardest to leave behind. Some schools try to stop students’ puppy love in different ways. Anything about “love” relationship is not allowed. For example, a middle school in Fu’an, Fujian Province forbids (禁止) boys and girls to sit together for meals and forbids boys to look at girls for a long time; a middle school in Luohe, Henan Province sets rules that boys and girls should meet in bright places with at least 5 other classmates, and if they meet in private they will be asked to go home with parents for more than a week and even advised to leave school; a middle school in Jinan, Shandong Province forbids everyone to send food and gifts to or receive them form the opposite sex (异性). It also forbids students to help the opposite sex with bags and coats and requires a “44 cm” distance between boys and girls.
Some students are not satisfied with such rules. “Why should we have strict places for different sexes to eat? It’s not using bathrooms!” Some people who care about the intelligence development of the students say that they should be more creative with fewer rules. For this, I’d like to say that middle school students are going through puberty (青春期). It’s normal for them to have some feelings for the opposite sex. Schools should provide correct guidance and education instead of giving simple and cruel rules and asking the students to follow.

B. some strict rules to stop students’ puppy love
C. some opinions to deal with students’ puppy love

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?
A. Not all the students agree with the rules made to stop puppy love.
B. In a middle school in Fu’an, boys and girls can’t sit together in class.

5. The writer thinks ________.
A. it’s necessary to make such strict rules
B. schools needn’t do anything to stop puppy love
C. good guidance and education are better than rules only
