I never called my father worthless. That was his own word for himself. He said it on the phone after I told him I was flying down to see him, from my home in Alaska to Florida. He had stroke(中风)the week before and then couldn’t speak very well.
“I’ll see you in about three weeks” I said, trying to make my voice cheerful, to make him comfortable. “I’mmm...not...worth...,” he said slowly, in low voice.
I knew what he meant. Actually, he did nothing meaningful to support his family. He didn’t do a job, leaving the family badly poor throughout my childhood. He seemed unable to form normal relationships, and didn’t treat his children as well as other fathers. Soon after grew up and left our house, he moved to Florida to live alone. I was glad. I saw my father three times in the next thirty years. Each time when I expected to hear some warm words from him, he would say nothing to me. The last time I saw him, I decided never to go back.
But eight years later, I felt something stronger. I wanted to forgive(原谅)him. began to try, moving slowly from “need love” to “give love” . I began to share meals with him, watch TV in his room and read to him.
And love came back. Yes, in small things. He called me “baby” one day. He phoned on my birthday. When came to visit, he didn’t want me to leave. All of this was new. All of this touched every part of me. My father was touched as well. I believed he felt loved, perhaps for first time. We cannot help all the broken families of the world, but we can begin here: with ourselves and our own families.

Luca Gramberini has been scuba-diving(戴水肺潜水) since he was a kid. His family owns a scuba company. For the past three summers, Luca has added gardening to his underwater activities. He helps run Nemo's Garden, a project to grow plants in the sea.
From May through September, Luca and other divers are working on Nemo's Garden in the Mediterranean Sea, 150 feet from the coast of Noli, Italy. Five large balloon-like objects, called biosphere(生物圈), hold plants such as beans and strawberries. The biosphere is filled with air and placed 20 feet below the surface. “My father came up with the idea because he loves gardening very much,” Luca said.
According to Luca, the sea is a good place to grow plants because underwater temperatures remain stable, changing little from day to night. The biosphere acts like greenhouses. Inside the air-filled biosphere, fresh water keeps evaporating(蒸发), providing the plants with a good environment to grow in. “We have already seen the plants, grow faster and better,” Luca says. “And there are fewer storms that can knock down the biosphere during the summer.”
Luca hopes Nemo's Garden will provide a new way of growing crops. “There is not enough land on the Earth,” he says. “And in many developing countries, bad conditions make it difficult for crops to grow.”
Though the project has just started, Nemo's Garden has achieved success and is moving to different areas. “We're going to try growing other plants,” Luca says. “We hope to set up biosphere in other countries. There are many possibilities.”
