He was most famous for writing two children’s books about a young girl called Alice. They were titled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
He also wrote two famous poems called The Hunting of the Snake and The Jabberwocky. What is important about these poems is that he made up many new words to use in them. And this has an everlasting (永恒的) influence on literary elites (文学精英) who are well educated about English. Many people still study his works and his life today.

Why Alice is still wonderful
Have you ever read the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland? When British writer Lewis Carroll dropped Alice down the rabbit hole in 1865, he had no way of knowing what it would lead to (how popular it would be). The girl and her friends in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have become well-known around the world. More than 100 versions of the book have been published. More than two dozen adaptations of the story have been made into movies. Millions of people are fascinated by the story and the characters in it.
Why have Alice and her friends kept us fascinated with them for so long? Why is the story so attractive?
One reason is that many people think the 7-year-old girl is our inner child. She is the child that we ever dreamed to be. Alice is the center of the book. She's brave, curious and always wants to move ahead to the next adventure. When she meets problems or even is attacked, she never once thinks of asking her parents for help. Instead, she tries to solve the problem in her own way. Maybe this can explain why the story is so welcomed by kids and teenagers. Because nowadays, they have been over protected by their parents and can't live in a world of their own. Alice is the child they really want to be.
Besides, the attractive setting in the book is another reason. The story is set in an imaginative world. Many things that don't exist in the real world can be found in the story. In the book, Alice can be 3 inches (7.6cm) tall and stand up on her tiptoes. She even finds a blue caterpillar smoking on a mushroom. Kids and teenagers are really attracted by the strange and imaginative world in the story.
The wonderland world makes us connect Alice's adventures with our own childhood. No matter how old you are, there is always a child living in your heart.
1.Who is the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by?
2.How many versions of the story have been published?
3.Why is the story so attractive?
4.Does the story make us think of our own childhood or adulthood?
5.What's the passage mainly about?

Have you ever thought about making a bicycle that you dream of? Some creative people have invented some special bicycles. Here are three of them.
Bambikes
Bambikes are produced in a company in Philippines. They are made of an unusual kind of bamboo and other materials like metal and a local plant. They are very strong. And they are a perfect combination (结合) of the greenest building material and common bicycles. By making bambikes, the company offers jobs to the local people. Besides, it provides money for some students in its community to pay for their study. To continue the production, the company plants more bamboo than it cuts.
The heaviest bicycle
A German cycling lover, Frank Dose, has recently made the world’s heaviest bicycle with big old wheels and lots of other waste materials. He created it just because he made a bet (打赌) with his friend. The bicycle weighed 1.08 tones. It broke the world record of its kind in weight. Frank said his bicycle was surprisingly easy to ride although it had a huge size and weighed a lot. He rode it in front of 5,000 people for over 100 meters to prove it.
Twisted (变形的) bicycles

Have you ever been in a rainforest? There aren’t any in Europe but there are some in Africa, Asia and South America. I was in a rainforest once. It was hot and dark. It was also very wet. Water was falling from the leaves of the trees like rain. The ground was covered with dead leaves but there were thousands of new plants growing.
The most exciting plants were the large trees. Some were 50 meters high. I could only see little pieces of blue sky through the leaves. All the trees had small plants growing on them, and some of these had beautiful, brightly colored flowers.
It was very noisy. I could hear lots of birds. They were hard to see but I saw one green and red parrot flying high above me. It was beautiful. The insects also made a lot of noise and I could feel them on my arms and legs.
I didn’t see any monkeys. They were probably sleeping high up in the treetops. I did see a small snake on the ground. I hate snakes so I walked quickly but carefully out of the forest.
I wouldn’t like to live in a rainforest but I am happy that I could see one before they all disappear from Earth.

Have you ever asked your relatives or friends if there is Wi-Fi in their houses? Have you ever searched for Wi-Fi when you are at restaurants or hotels? The answers will probably be "Yes". Most of us want Wi-Fi everywhere as if we can't live without it. But we can only use free Wi-Fi in some public places. We still have to spend some money accessing(连接)the Internet at most time. Here comes a piece of good news.
A rich, powerful organization in the USA called the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) has decided to change the age of online computing (计算) completely by giving free Wi-Fi to every person on Earth. They will send up hundreds of satellites(卫星) into low Earth orbit(轨道)in 2015.

九年级英语任务型阅读中等难度题查看答案及解析
阅读下面短文, 根据短文内容完成句子。
What's the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard—work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange (排列) the 26 English letters in order and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…26 for z, you can change an English word into a number. So hard—work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=“98”, meaning 98 is its mark.
Knowledge:11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=“96,” love:12+15+22+5=“54,” and luck: 12+21+3+11=“47”, a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money? It can't, either.
Then what else? Don't be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude: 1 +20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100, a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most time people hope for a better life. It is possible that they will have a better life if they change their attitudes. When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you'll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure, you'll find it's also rewarding (有益的)though it has caused you losses.
1.Some people think it is important to have hard—work, knowledge, ___________ in their life.
2.According to the passage, the mark of the word "money" is ___________.
3.From the passage, we know it's possible for you ___________ if you change your attitude.
4.People will meet ___________towards them when they change their manners and become friendly to others
5.We know that ___________ is the most important thing in our life from the passage.
