Beijing has a large number of old trees. A survey showed that the city had about 40, 000 century-old trees. Among them, more than 6, 100 were over 300 years old. It's said that the longest living tree is about 3, 000 years old, almost as old as the city itself. Nearly half of the old trees are in old streets and ancient gardens.
However, about 9, 000 of the old trees are in danger because of environmental changes, natural disasters(灾害), and so on.
Last year, Beijing government started a project to protect trees that are over 100 years old. They first found two ginkgoes(银杏树)and two pagoda trees(国槐)at the foot of Beijing's Western Hills.
Yang Shutian, director of the project, said that old trees could be seen as"living relics(遗迹)”and keeping them healthy was also part of the work to protect and carry forward the city's history.
A group of tree experts carried out an examination of the four old trees, which were very weak and dying. The experts soon took action to save the trees. They filled holes, controlled pests and watered the trees over the next two months. The trees are now very strong. According to Yang, more old trees in the city will be protected through the project.
"The old trees have witnessed(见证)the city's development and played a key role in improving the city's environment. To make them healthy is our duty, "Yang added.

A survey shows that the number of fires in government buildings each year is small compared to home fires. This is probably because such buildings are taken good care of and managed. However, at home after work fire safety is your own duty.
For most of us who live in high-rise buildings, the safety of you and your family depends on how much you know to do with an emergency(紧急情况). When a fire happens, there is usually little time to decide what to do or how to act. The best thing is to make your emergency plan as soon as possible.
Sit down with the family and prepare a careful escape project. Do remember that every fire is unpredictable. Fire and smoke can move very quickly and the situations in any part of the building may change very quickly. Smoke is usually more dangerous than fire. It can spread throughout the building and enter your house when the fire is many floors away.
Some information says it is best to leave your house immediately when there is a fire. Others say it is safer to stay there. Which is correct?
Usually the best thing to do is to leave the building as soon as possible. However, do not try to leave your house a long time after the fire alarm has sounded. There is a higher chance that heavy smoke has already spread into stairways and hallways.
Never travel through smoke. You must stay inside your house and place wet towels at the bottom of the door to stop smoke from entering. Call the Fire Services Department by dialing “119”, tell them where you are and then move to the most smoke-free room. Open the window there to let in fresh air if possible. Hang a sheet from the window to show fire fighters where you are.
1.In the writer’s opinion, an emergency plan for a fire should be made early ______.
A. so that the fire can be put out in time
B. because we might lose our way in a fire

D. so that we can keep ourselves safe from a fire
2.The underlined word “unpredictable” in Paragraph 3 is close to ______ in meaning.

3.If it is a long time since the fire alarm sounded, the proper thing to do is ______.
A. to try to put out the fire
B. to stay inside the house
C. to leave the house at once
D. to sit down with the family
4.The writer wrote this passage in order to ______.
A. tell people some information about fires

C. give people some advice on escaping from fires

Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve a large number of foods. And the industry(产业) isn’t stopping there.
Food production
With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated(复杂的) chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that — it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Food printer to “re-create forms and pieces” of food that are “exactly the same,” freeing cooks to finish other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.
Sustainability(可持续性)
The world’s population(人口) is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050, and some experts estimate (估计) that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to keep present levels(水平). Sustainability is becoming a necessity. 3D food printing could probably help solve the problem. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids (水解胶体) from rich renewable materials(原料) like algae and grass to replace(代替) the ingredients(烹饪原料). 3D printing can reduce fuel use and emissions(排放). The stores of the future might store "food" that lasts for years, freeing up shelf space and reducing transportation and storage requirements.
Nutrition(营养)
Future 3D food printers could make food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, “Food printing could allow customers(消费者) to print food with customized(定制的) nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand(要求).”
Challenges
Though there are great developments in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Most ingredients must be changed to a dry powder(粉末) before a printer can use them, and the printing process takes a lot of time, because ingredients interact (相互作用)with each other in very complex ways. Besides, most of the 3D food printers now use only dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts doubt about 3D food printers, believing they are more suitable for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.
1.What advantage(好处) does 3D printing bring to food production?
A.It teaches cooks to create new dishes. B.It saves time and effort(努力) in cooking.
C.It improves the cooking conditions. D.It helps to decorate the restaurants.
2.What does the underlined word “raise” mean in paragraph 3?
A.募集 B.导致 C.培育 D.增加
3.According to Paragraph 4, 3D-printed food ________.
A.is easier for consumers to get B.can meet personal nutritional needs
C.is tastier than food in supermarkets D.can keep all the nutrition in raw(生的) materials
4.What is the main factor(因素) that prevents 3D food printing from spreading widely?
A.The printing process is not long. B.3D food printers are too expensive.
C.Food materials have to be dry. D.Some experts doubt 3D food printing.
5.What could be the best title of the passage?
A.3D Food Printing: Delicious New Technology B.A New Way to Improve 3D Food Printing
C.The Challenges for 3D Food Production D.3D Food Printing: From Farm to Table
