My dear son,
Your letter of last week reached us yesterday, and I enclose $13, which is all I have on me at present. I may sell the other pig next week and make up the balance of what you wanted. I will probably have to wear the old buffalo overcoat to meetings again this winter, but that doesn’t matter so long as you are getting education.
I hope you will get your education as cheap as you can, for it cramps your mother and me like a hill to put up the money Mind you. I don’t complain. I know the clothes cost so much.
I want you to be educated so that you can go anyway and spell the hardest word, I want you to be able to go among the Romans or the Medes and Persians and talk to any of them in their own native tongue.
I never had any advantages when I was boy but your mother and I decided that we would make you full of knowledge if you keep studying hard. regardless (不考虑 ) of money.
Now, regarding that boat - padding suit, and that baseball suit, and that bathing suit, and that roller- rinkturn suit, and that lawn-lennis suit, mind. I don’t care about the money, because you say a young man can’t really educate himself thoroughly without them, but I wish you’d send home what you get through with this fall, and I’ll wear them through the winter under my other clothes. We have a much colder winter here than we used to, or else I’m failing in bodily health. Last winter I tried to go through without underclothes, the way I did when I was a boy, but a cold wave came down our way and picked me out of a crowd.
Your daddy

Dear Boris,
Thanks for your nice letter.
After I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. It’s very different from what I learned at school! Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects (方言) are different too! Some of their accents (口音) are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions.
But it’s not the language that’s different and surprising. Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were eaten every day. That’s quite wrong! I get rather mad now when I hear all the foolish words about typical (典型的) English food.
I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this ‘thick fog’ disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the idea to speak about the weather was very helpful. The weather in London is really changeable.
On the other hand habits are different. People tell me what is typically British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. Local habits and traditions are not the same as what we knew.
But what is ordinary for all British is that they follow traditions. Probably Britain has more living signs of its past than many other countries. And people have always been proud of having ancient buildings in capitals, big cities and the countryside.
I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.
Love from Britain,
Peter

A. They are not the same in different parts of Britain.
B. Habits in Wales and Scotland are typically British.

Dear Lucy,
In your last letter, your asked me how to love to your parents. Here is my advice.
※Make a picture for them. Whether with pencils or paints, it will be a treasure(财富) to them forever.
※Write a letter to them. Take your time to put your thoughts in it .
※keep your room clean! Though it’s a kind of the chore, it shows mom and dad that care.
※Cook them a dinner! It can be some rice , some cheese or some hot dogs; it can give them a break.
※tell them that you love them very often. Your love can make them feel warm and proud.
※Never tell a lie(谎言) to them. Probably the biggest way to show them you love them is, never to lie. This shows them that you not only love them, but also believe in and respect(尊重) them.
※Create time to be with them. Watch a film with your mom once in a while, or go to a sports match with your dad once in a while just to show them how much you care and want to close with them.
※If you do something wrong, apologize(道歉) and explain it! They will know you are sorry. You could do something for them to show you want to make it up to them. Just saying sorry can really show how much you love them.
Yours ,

We did a project with Mr Green about a few countries in Europe and Asia.
Some of my friends went to the library for photos and I used the Internet to search for information.Mr Green gave us a lot of helpful advice. At the end of this term,we gave an oral presentation(口头报告)in front of the class.

Dear Helen,
Thanks for your last letter. Yes, I’m enjoying myself on my exchange program in France. It’s even better than I thought it would be. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family are really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. And you wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved! I’m very comfortable speaking French now. Although I still make lots of mistakes, it doesn’t make me worried as it used to. My biggest challenge (挑战) is learning how to behave (表现) at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are really not the same as the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You should put it on the table! I thought that was very strange at first, but now I’m used to it. You shouldn’t eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit! (You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork.) Another thing is that it is very rude to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “It was delicious.” Also, it’s rude to put your hands in your lap. You should always keep your hands, but not your elbows (肘部), on the table. I have to say, I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to things and don’t find them so strange any more.
I’ll write soon and tell you more about life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.
Yours,
Li Ying
1.Where is Li Ying now?
2.What does Li Ying think of her host family?
3.How does Li Ying feel while she is speaking French now?
4.When can Li Ying eat things with her hands there?
5.Why do you want to go there if you have the chance to take part in an exchange program?
