According to a national study, in the summer of 2013, the long-term(长期的) warm weather in the UK has made the number of butterflies increase.
Around 46,000 volunteers(志愿者) took part in the year’s Big Butterfly Count(统计), and they found 830,000 butterflies. Volunteers were asked to make a record. They would record how many times they found one of 21 different kinds of butterflies.
Later, the scientists used the records to find out how many butterflies of different kinds were found across the country. Then, they compared the results to the year before. They found that there was a rise in the number of 15 kinds of butterflies, and some of them went up by 50% compared to recent years. They said the increase in butterfly numbers was a result of warm weather.
However, scientists also said that the number of butterflies was in decline(下降) as a whole, and that we might not see_______the next year.
Richard Fox, who works for Butterfly Conservation, said, “UK butterflies are in long-term decline. Studies have been done since the 1970s. They show that UK butterflies have declined in type and number.”
He added, “We musthaltthe long-term decline of these beautiful creatures(生物). The only way is by stopping the damage that has been done to the butterflies’ habitats(栖息地) across the UK.”

According to the studies from the UN, the increase of CO2 in the air is responsible for 85% of the temperature increase. CO2 goes into the air when we burn fossil fuels to run our industries, cars and so on. Luckily, half of the CO2 that we produced is taken in by plants, trees, land and the oceans. Bob Christiansen, who studied the volcanic history of Yellowstone National Park in the 1960s, became puzzled about something that, oddly, had not troubled anyone before: he couldn’t find the park’s volcano. It had been known for a long time that Yellowstone was volcanic in nature—that’s the reason for all its hot springs and other steamy features. But Christiansen couldn’t find the Yellowstone volcano anywhere.
Most of us, when we talk about volcanoes, think of the classic cone (圆锥体) shapes of a Fuji or Kilimanjaro, which are created when erupting magma(岩浆) piles up. These can form remarkably quickly. In 1943, a Mexican farmer was surprised to see smoke rising from a small part of his land. In one week he was the confused owner of a cone five hundred feet high. Within two years it had topped out at almost fourteen hundred feet and was more than half a mile across. Altogether there are some ten thousand of these volcanoes on Earth, all but a few hundred of them extinct. There is, however, a second less known type of volcano that doesn’t involve mountain building. These are volcanoes so explosive that they burst open in a single big crack, leaving behind a vast hole, the caldera(火山喷口). Yellowstone obviously was of this second type, but Christiansen couldn’t find the caldera anywhere.
Just at this time NASA decided to test some new high-altitude cameras by taking photographs of Yellowstone. A thoughtful official passed on some of the copies to the park authorities and said that they might make a nice blow-up for one of the visitors’centers. As soon as Christiansen saw the photos, he realized why he had failed to spot the caldera: almost the whole park-2.2 million acres—was caldera. The explosion had left a hole more than forty miles across—much too huge to be seen from anywhere at ground level. At some time in the past Yellowstone must have blown up with a violence far beyond the scale of anything known to humans.
1.What puzzled Christiansen when he was studying Yellowstone?
2.Is Fuji or Kilimanjaro created when erupting magma piles up?
3.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
4.When did Christiansen realize why he had failed to spot the caldera?
5.What was the caldera of Yellowstone?

Many people have a fear(害怕) of public speaking. According to a study, it has an influence on 3 in every 4 people. This fact is surprising and worrying, as most jobs require some speaking ability. The following will help you to make a speech better.
Write note cards. Write main ideas on your cards. Don’t write details. Put in some fun facts, questions, and other activities on the cards to share with the class. Don’t look at your note cards for a long time while speaking. If necessary, you’re only going to want to have a quick look at the card for information, not read every last word.
Smile at your class. When it comes time to speak, there’s nothing that draws your class into your speech than a good old-fashioned smile. Be happy, because you’re about to teach your class something they didn’t know before. Studies have shown that smiles are infections. That means once you smile, it’s hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your speech to go off well, smile. That’ll make everyone smile and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.
Make eye contact. Nothing is more boring than listening to a speaker who looks at the floor or at note cards. Relax. Your class is made up of your friends and you talk to them all the time. Talk the same way now. have a look at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you’re communicating with them. Also, you’ll look like you know what you’re talking about.
Use hand motions. Move your hands along as you talk, using them to express your key points and keep the class interested. It will also lead your nervous energy into a better place.
1.According to the passage, ______ of people might fear to speak in public.
A. 100 percent B. 75 percent
C. 50 percent D. 25 percent
2.In Paragraph 3 of the passage “smiles are infection” means ______.
