Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot(战车). But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot” around the sky.
So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths(希腊神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.
This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals(化学制品)from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything, and there’s no pollution.
Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight.
1.What does “chariot” really refer to in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?
A.The Earth. B.The Greek god. C.Solar Impulse. D.Birds.
2.Which of the following is TRUE of Solar Impulse?
A.It can only fly at night. B.It has already flown across the US.
C.It is powered by the sun. D.It needs gas to work.
3.In the passage, what is mentioned as the cause of pollution in China?
A.Overpopulation. B.Burning coal or gas.
C.Using solar energy. D.Heavy traffic.
4.What does the writer mean by “That’s a pretty long flight”?
A.It takes a lot of time to get Solar Impulse going.
B.Solar Impulse moves very slowly.
C.Solar Impulse will be in use for a long time.
D.Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the sun.
5.The passage is most probably taken from___________.
A.a Greek myth B.a science fiction C.a story-book D.a science magazine

In the past 200 years, the earth's temperature has increased greatly. It's reported that a marked increase in the temperature of about 0.7℃ appeared at the end of last century. Some scientists think mini-umbrellas(微型伞)might reduce the global(全球的)temperature.
Building a single umbrella, which is big enough to cover the whole earth, seems to be impossible.Roger Angel,a scientist from the USA,has carried out research to deal with this problem. He came up with an idea of mini-umbrellas.In fact, each mini-umbrella is made up of two parts,a spaceship and a sunshade(遮阳篷).A spaceship weighing about 1g would carry a sunshade that is half a meter long.It would be mostly transparent. That means light can pass it directly to reach the earth, with lands and oceans clearly in view.
Pressure(压力)from the sunlight would keep the little spaceships in position around the earth at a distance of about 1.5 million kilometers. As a result, sending over 1,000 billion mini-umbrellas into space would reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth. This allows sunlight to be reflected(反射)back to space easily, causing the temperature of the earth's ground to fall off.Covering large areas of the earth,mini-umbrellas together could reflect 1.8 percent of sunlight back.In Roger's plan, scientists will send up 800,000 mini-umbrellas at a time,20 million times in all during ten years.Scientists suggest the earliest launch could be in just 16 years.
Not all the scientists agree with the idea. Some suppose there should be easier and much cheaper ways to prevent the earth from getting too hot, such as to slow down the pollution people bring and to reduce the human activities.Whatever the result of the argument is,this idea of mini-umbrellas in space is certainly creative.
1.The underlined word“transparent”here probably means “ ”.
A. 透明的 B. 透气的 C. 透风的

A. B. C.
3.After scientists send over 1,000 billion mini-umbrellas into space, .
A. pressure from the sunlight would allow the mini-umbrellas to be reflected back to space easily
B. the mini-umbrellas would reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth
C. sunlight would never come into the earth
4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Scientists suggest that the earliest launch could be in just 16 years.
B. A spaceship weighing about 1g would carry a sunshade.
C. Roger will send up 800,000 mini-umbrellas into space during 20 years.
5.The best title for this passage should be .
A. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH
B. A MINI-UMBRELLA PLAN
C. CHEAPER WAYS TO PREVENT THE POLLUTION

I live in a town. In the past, the air wasn’t fresh. There was a river. People put rubbish in it. The water went bad. The fishes in the river died. There was much rubbish in the streets which weren’t wide. It smelt terrible. People lived in low old houses with trees all around and had a terrible life. The children couldn’t have many chances to go out to cities, not to say, have a good education. Farmers worked only with their hands. They worked very hard all year round. They planted crops(农作物)with the help of animals. The poor people went anywhere on foot, and only some rode bikes. Few visitors came here to spend their holidays.
At present, things have been greatly changed. People have moved into big bright houses or beautiful buildings. There is a big factory. Many people work in it. They are getting richer. Different kinds of cars and buses are running in the big streets. It is faster and easier to travel. People plant many fruit trees and get much money. People plant crops with the help of machines which can save lots of work. Students can study in a modem school. People pay more attention to the environmental protection. The mountains are becoming greener, water much cleaner. What around us is the clearer sky and greener water. As a result, many visitors come here to spend their holidays.
