Today Dante had a small skating competition in his class. Before we went to the competition, I asked him if he wanted to wear something nice for the competition and he said, “Who cares? it’s not important.” When we showed up at the rink(溜冰场), we found that most of the kids were dressed up. One boy who was around nine years old was my son’s friend, wearing a dress shirt and a pink vest. I walked over to his mother saying how beautifully dressed he was. But his mother said, “He didn’t want to dress up. He said that this competition was not important for him to dress up.”
I thought it was interesting that neither Dante nor his friend viewed the competition as important and neither wanted to dress up. I started to wonder if this was how a child learned what was “important” and what wasn’t.
Interestingly, this boy won two medals and Dante won none.
Parents and teachers often instill (灌输) what they think is important: then children will accept the opinions of the adults. Gradually, they grow up stressing about how they look, how many medals they get, what color the medals are, how good their grades are, what a great “job” they can get in life, what a big house they can live in... etc.
Dante taught me an important lesson today. He taught me what was unimportant. Life goes on long after the medal ceremony whether you win a medal or not.
1.Why didn’t Dante want to dress up for the competition?
A. He had no proper clothes.
B. He had no time to dress up.
C. His mother didn’t prepare clothes for him.
D. He thought he didn’t need to dress up.
2.What does Paragraph 5 want to tell us?
A. Children stress about many things in life.
B. Adults may instill wrong ideas into children.
C. Children are always influenced by adults.
D. Adults should set good examples to children.
3.What lesson did the author learn from her son?
A. Winning medals makes people proud.
B. Not all things are that important in life.
C. Fairness is more important in competitions.
D. Kids have a better understanding of life than adults.

Danelle Ballengee, 35, was a world-class athlete who had run in over 500 long distance competitions through deserts and mountains around the world. Up ahead, Taz disappeared, but Danelle did not worry as she climbed a rocky path to the top of a ridge (山脊) near the top, her foot hit a piece of ice. She slipped over a stone and fell over a cliff (悬崖).
She was badly injured. She could swing her toes but when she tried to stand, the pain was terrible. The lower half of her body was useless.
Danelle looked at her watch. It was noon. She guessed she was three kilometers from her truck trapped in a hidden desert in winter. Then she heard Taz. He ran down from the top to meet her. Danelle remained still, her pain became less serious and she could think her way out of this trap. She would follow Taz down the path to the valley floor and crawl back to her truck.
She rolled onto her stomach. Taz went ahead of her, then back, wondering why Danelle didn’t follow him. Bearing the pain, she focused on her task.
Five hours later, Danelle reached the valley bottom, 500 meters closer to her goal, too tired. Then she noticed an ice-covered hole. She needed water to go through. She dipped her bottle into the hole, but it came out full of soil. She used the lid to slowly pick water from the surface. It took over 50 picks to get enough. She finally stopped as it was full. Danelle reached out to her and she put her arms around Taz. She fell his warmth and held on.
As the hours went on, Danelle tried to pay no attention to the pain and cold. She stared at the night sky, talked to Taz and counted the stars with him. Pain annoyed her constantly. We once had a poster competition in our fifth grade art class.
“You could win prizes,’’our teacher told US as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing,“The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster. ”
We studied the board critically. Some of US looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the fight or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten—dollar grand prize, each and every one of US. I'm going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.
Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of US used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one comer of our poster and let the space draw the viewer's attention to it. Some of US would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the soil they seemed especially fond of。making all of US believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners.
I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it. I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in.
Minutes passed.
No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted me,and I probably never would have thought about that poster again.
I was still sitting at my desk, thinking,What poster? When the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me.
51.. What was the teacher's requirement for the poster?
A. It must appear in time.
B. It must be done in class.
C. It must be done on a construction sheet.
D. It must include the words on the blackboard.

A. 1oved their own designs more
