On Monday, my classmates and I heard that our geography teacher’s father had died. We were surprised that he was still teaching in school. My best friend was telling me that by teaching he was trying to forget losing his father and become strong in the way to teaching.
We came up with an idea. When we went back to school yesterday, we gave him cheer-up cards which we had taken time to decorate with flowers, hearts and peace signs. As we had handed the cards to him, we both could see the light in his eyes. The look on his face said how much he thanked what we did for him. The whole scene was very warm and loving, and it’s hard to express in words. He enjoyed it very much and the expression on his face was really lively. This morning, when we both went to see the teacher again, he had been so happy, and had given us both a hug. This made us both feel that we just might have made his day, and that he was going to be okay.

When I’m in trouble, I always take out a book and read quietly. I put my heart into it so that I’ll forget all the troubles. I’ve formed the habit of reading in this way.
When I was a little boy, I was interested in picture books and storybooks. When I was a middle school student, I began to read novels, plays, essays (散文) and so on. I found I could get much from them. Little by little I took great interest in literature (文学) and last term I won the first prize in the composition contest among middle school students in our city.
Reading The Emperor’s New Clothes, I had to let out a burst of laughter over his silly action. The Little Match Girl couldn’t keep me from crying for her misery (悲惨). Robinson Crusoe took me into a strange world full of danger. And I was also deeply impressed (留下印象) by Helen Keller’s perseverance (毅力). Besides these, books also tell me other things — how to be a brave man and how to tell the difference between the right and the wrong. In a word, good books can make me know what I didn’t know before. So I think of good books as my best friends.
I’ll never forget this famous saying, “Good books are the best friends who never turn their backs upon us.”

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?
Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain "remains more awake" than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it "first-night influence". "In Japan they say, 'If you change your bed, you can't sleep,'" said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report's writers. "You don't sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it."
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don't know if the left half keeps "watch" all night, or whether it "works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night". They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is "looking out for us" in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.
