Many years ago my student asked me a question, “Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?” Without taking time to reflect, I answered, “Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone’s life.”
Even though the words came from my heart, that wasn’t a very good answer and my student didn’t let it go. “Let me get this straight,” he said, “You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?” He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away. I knew he didn’t understand. I’m one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or wise.
Even though that student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach: It’s in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输)in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone into a pond(池塘), the ripples(波纹)go on and on until they reach the shore. You can’t have ripples without a “stone”. Good teachers throw stones that make a good difference, and that’s what I try to do.
I love teenagers. I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid making mistakes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they’ll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do it, too. Teaching isn’t for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.

In a class discussion not long ago, I asked my students the following question, “How long could you feel comfortable and right without food?” One student quickly answered, “About two hours.” The answer is true. For most of us, we begin to feel hungry in a few hours after each meal. We can’t imagine starting our day by waking up hungry, going all day without food and going to bed with even greater hunger.
The statistics (数据) on hunger in the United States are much surprising to all of us. According to Feeding America, “50,000,000 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s the number in one of the wealthiest nations on the planet. And one in four of these 50,000,000 people are children.”
No Kid Hungry surveyed more than 1,000 teachers and principals around the country and found that 73 percent of teachers said they regularly teach hungry students who don’t have enough food to eat at home, and 87 percent of principals said they often see hungry students in school. As a result of so many hungry students, teachers spend nearly $40 a month buying food for kids with their own money.
This is the time of the year when children do not have the benefit (好处) of school lunch programs. Here are some ways we can do to help change this situation: First, we can give money to the local food bank. Next, we can donate food in our local area. Third, we can volunteer our time at a local food bank. So, on our next visit to the grocery store, add an extra food idem that can be donated to a food bank. Don’t wait to make a difference in a child’s life.
1.Which of the following is true?
A. Many Americans don’t have enough food to eat.
B. Most children in the US don’t want to eat breakfast.
C. American children are in hunger right now.
D. American schools don’t provide free breakfast.
2.The writer’s purpose of writing this text is to ______.
A. show the importance of school lunch programs
B. ask us to make some changes for children’s food
C. ask us to buy some more food when shopping next time
D. ask us to do something for students’ lunch programs

“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.
This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought.
Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.
Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.
1.In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ________.
A. to practise speaking, writing and feeling it
B. to forget your own native language
C. to translate everything into his own language
D. to memorize the English words and grammatical rules
2.“Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.”This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.
A. help you to study English well
B. stop you mastering English
C. make English easy to learn
D. help you notice mistakes
3.Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” here means________.
A. to get a knowledge of English by touching
B. to be able to read and write English
C. to translate English into your own by imagining
D. to be able to experience the rich sensation of the language

I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.
After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price, so we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.
I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I walked out of the motel with a flashlight. I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. I had to look for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. When I took another look into the last bin, I saw my bag right on its top! I was never so happy to see such a dirty old bag in my life!
