A lady, in a plain(朴素的)cotton dress, and her husband, dressed in a homemade suit, stepped off a train. They walked into a university president’s office without an appointment(约定).
“We want to see the president,” the man said softly.
“He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary said.
“We’ll wait,” the lady replied.
For two hours, the secretary didn’t pay any attention to them, hoping the couple would give up and go away. They didn’t. The secretary finally decided to tell the president about it. The president agreed to meet them. But clearly, he didn’t want to do so. When the couple went into the president’s office, the lady said: “We had a son who ever studied in this university for one year. He loved here very much but he died last year. We would like to give a building to the university.”
The president glanced at(瞥了一眼)the cotton dress and homemade suit, and then said, “A building! Do you have any idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars worth of buildings at the university.” For a moment the lady was silent.
The president was pleased. He thought the couple could go away now.
The lady turned to her husband and said quietly: “Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded.

A lady in an old cotton dress and her husband, dressed in an old suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked into the president of Harvard’s outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such country people had no business at Harvard. She frowned(皱眉). “We want to see the president,” the man said softly. “He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary said coldly. “We’ll wait,” the lady replied.
For hours, the secretary didn’t talk to them, hoping that the couple would finally become tired and go away. They didn’t. And the secretary finally decided to disturb the president. “Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they’ll leave,” she told him. He frowned too. Someone of his importance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with them.
The president walked toward them unwillingly. The lady told him, “We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard, and was very happy here. But he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to set up a memorial(纪念碑) to him somewhere on campus. ” The president was so surprised that he shouted sharply, “We can’t put up a statue(塑像) for every person who attended Harvard and died. This place would look like a cemetery (墓地).
“Oh, no” the lady explained, “We don’t want to build a statue. We thought we would give a building to Harvard.” The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at their plain clothes, and said with surprise, “A building! Do you have any idea how much a building costs? It was the old lady's birthday. She put on her favorite blue dress and got up early to wait for the postman. Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she hardly wrote to her.
The old lady was eighty today. Perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. She was excited—like a child.
The little boy, Johnnie, said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post came. "I guess you'll get lots of presents," he said, "I did when I was six."
What would she get? Perhaps a new sweater. Emm, blue is such a pretty color. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers...
Finally, the postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Johnnie ran to him at once. "Granny," he shouted, "I've got your post."
"Just post ? No parcel (包裹), Johnnie?" Her heart beat fast.
"No, granny. Maybe the parcel was pretty large to come by letter post. It would come later by parcel post. You must be patient."
She tore the envelope open. It was a card with a message under the printed Happy Birthday—Buy yourself something nice with the check, Myra.
A big number is in the check! But with shaking fingers she tore the check into little bits. The pieces flied to the floor like a bird with broken wings. Her present, her lovely present.

“Do you like my dress?” She asked a lady. “My Mum made it just for me,” she said with tears in her eyes.
“Well, I think it’s very pretty, so tell me, little girl, why are you crying?”
The little girl answered in a low voice, “After Mum made me this dress, she went away. My Dad says that she’s up in heaven with grandfather.”
Finally the woman realized why she was crying. She felt very sorry for the little girl and held the child in her arms.
Just before the lady wanted to go, the girl stopping crying, walked back from the woman, and showed her a spot (点) on her dress, and said, “Right here is where my Mum kissed my dress, and here,” pointing to another spot, “and here is another kiss, and here, and here. Mum said that she had put all those kisses on my dress so that I would forget my sadness.”
The lady realized that she wasn’t just looking at a dress, no, she was looking at mother. The mother knew that she was going away. So she gave all her love to her lovely daughter and put it into the dress.
