Many years ago, when I graduated from school and was working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership-a shop selling cars-was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you"-two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.
1.The words "took off" underlined in Paragraph 2 mean "_____".
A. turned off B. moved off
C. put off D. set up
2.What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car?
A. He had it pulled back to the gas station.
B. The couple sent him a business card.
C. The couple offered to help him.
D. He called his friend for help.
3.The battery of the author's car was dead because _____.
A. he forgot to turn off the lights
B. the meeting lasted a whole day
C. he drove too long a distance
D. something went wrong with the lights
4. By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show _____.
A. how to write a thank-you letter
B. how to deal with car problems
C. the kind-heartedness of other people
D. the importance of expressing thanks

We were on the way from Hutchinson to Chicago for a short spring break. For many years I had wanted to take my family on the train. We all had been to Chicago four years ago, and the kids loved it. Chicago is one of my favorite cities, too, so the thought struck me again last fall to ride the train to Chicago. Of course, flying would have been faster. But I don’t think flying is easier, especially these days, with all the security and waiting in lines at airports.
Though we were tired in the middle of the night, the kids got on the train with the exhilaration of this adventure. “We’re moving,” my son William shouted happily with big eyes as the train began to pull away from the Hutchinson station.
I removed my shoes and lay down to try to finish my night’s sleep. The sleeper car would have better enabled that, but the ordinary train seats were not too bad. An airline flight is a harder experience for me: not enough room, two hours of pain with my knees almost touching my mouth. On the train I could almost outstretch all of my 6-foot-2-plus body in the generous legroom.
The journey didn’t feel at all as long as it was. We all found the train ride a joy. The car ride would have felt every minute of 13 hours. But on the train you are free to walk around, sit in the observation carriage for a while and enjoy the scenery out the windows, have a nice meal in the dining car, read a book, or play a board game.
In short, the train is all about enjoying the trip, which isn’t something I do so much when traveling by airline or by car, when the trip seems more of a mission (任务) to get there than an experience to enjoy along the way.
Chicago offers much to do for a family. This time, getting there was half the fun.
1.We can learn from the first paragraph that _____.
A. the kids love the train journey
B. it was the first time that the kids were taken on the train
C. the author didn’t enjoy the long train journey
D. Chicago is one of the kid’s favorite cities
2.What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Tiredness. B. Relaxation.
C. Excitement. D. Worry.
3.In the third paragraph, an airline flight experience is mentioned to show _____.
A. a train ride is more comfortable
B. a train ride is too long
C. an airline flight is miserable
D. an airline flight is easier
4.Which of the following words best describes the whole family’s feeling about the train journey?
A. Moved. B. Nervous.
C. Disappointed. D. Delighted.

My first visit to Angkor Wat was in 1980. The country had been at war for many years and the temple was deserted and falling to pieces. Plants were growing out of the roofs, and trees were growing in the courtyards.
Today, the temple is the scene of a busy repair programme. A team of 15 Indian experts are organizing a workforce of 400 Cambodians, most of them women, who are cleaning, repairing and rebuilding parts of this temple.
As I walked through the courtyards, I noticed the Cambodian women devote hours to cleaning carefully a tiny area of stone. Boards are laid down to protect the precious painted stones while the repair work is going on. There are very few machines and little heavy equipment. Workers carry building materials in buckets at the end of long poles. Piles of stones lie in a corner of the courtyard, waiting to be replaced.
The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists. It is a very slow task. First they clean the stones with brushes using buckets of a weak chemical. Then gaps between the stones are filled in. Finally another material is painted onto the stones which will protect them from water forever.
Work starts every day at 7 a. m. and goes on until late afternoon six days a week, with a break at midday.
Evening is the best time to visit the temple, after the tour groups have left. As the sun sinks lower, shadows spread across the courtyard. After sunset, the sky turns pink. The grey stone towers take on a golden colour before turning pink. Nowhere else in the world can there be such a quiet, beautiful place.
1.This passage mainly tells__________
A. the poor look of the temple Angkor Wat in 1980.
B. the history of the temple Angkor Wat
C. the repair work being done to the temple Angkor Wat
D. the difficulty in the repair work
2.According to the author, which of the following plays the least important role in the repair work?
A. The women workers. B. The Indian workers
C. Machines D. Skilled workers
3.The underlined sentence “the temple was deserted” possibly means that________
A. there was no one in the temple and it was in a poor state
B. the temple was built on desert and nobody noticed it
C. the temple was very old with a long history
D. the temple was repaired by the Cambodians, most of whom women
4.To clean the stone, how many steps should be followed?
A. Tow B. Three
C. Four D. Five

During the school year many parents take on the role of driver as they drive their children from one lesson to another .Understandably so. Many of us want our children to have a little taste of everything, from organized sports to music, dance and more. But we can overdo it, leaving our children feeling a little burnt out, and according to parent educator Diane Loisie ,it’s their school work which suffers the most. “After school, if they’re busy in a number of sporting events, besides they need to do their homework, then the time they’ll feel sleepy is in the classroom. Your child needs free time. So if you’re filling up that after school time, then it’s during the day that they’re going to be taking a break.”
Professor Claire McDermott agrees that there’s a lot to be gained from sometimes putting those scheduled lessons and activities away. “Relaxing time is important for children. It’s time just to do the things they want to do. A child can go up to their room, or they can play around. It doesn’t look like productive time; parents certainly wouldn’t be saying ‘Wow, are they ever learning things now?’ But this relaxing time gives both the body and the brain just a wonderful chance to relax after a day. It helps a child prepare for sleep, but it also helps to understand the learning that’s gone on that day.”
It’s hard to prevent signing our kids up for some activities and lessons. After all, many of us want our children to have a head start in life and the chance to join in great activities in the arts or sports is a part of that. However, Loisie feels that in the long run most children feel better with just a few key activities because it gives them an opportunity to master them. “When we get our children in too many activities because we want our children to experience everything, then what we’re doing is setting them up not to be good at one thing or gaining a skill.” So choose your children’s activities wisely. It may be one of the best things you’ve ever done for your kids… and for the family drivers!
1.What is the biggest disadvantage for children to attend too many lessons after school?
A.They can get bored easily about everything.
B.They might have no time to do the homework.
C.They might not pay much attention to learning.
D.They cannot easily focus on learning during the day.
2.What should we think of children’s playing around aimlessly?
A.It is productive. B.It is helpful. C.It is a bad habit. D.It is a waste of time.
3.Why should parents limit the activities our children attend?
A.Because children have no time.
B.Because children cannot learn many things.
C.Because children do not have enough sleep.
D.Because children cannot focus on too many activities.

D.Let children learn something from various subjects.
