Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.
This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light that you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km. per minute. In some cases, the light from one of tonight’s stars had started on its journey to you before you were born.
Thus, if we want to be honest, we can’t say, “The stars are shining tonight.” We have to say instead, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago, but their light has only just reached the earth.”
1. Light speed is ______ sound speed
A.as fast as | B.a million times slower than |
C.about millions of times faster than | D.about a million times faster than |
2.If you stand 200 meters away from a man who is firing a gun to start a race, you will find out that ______.

B.the sound does not travel as fast as light |
C.the sound will reach you before the man fires |

3.Sunlight obviously (明显地) ______ than the light of the moon
A.has to travel a greater distance | B.moves less quickly |

When was the last time your family sat down together to have a dinner?
The speed at which we live today no longer allows for slow eating habits. Most people work long hours. There is lots of fast food and eating out is now on the increase. Often, food is eaten in front of the television in silence, or a child eats alone in front of the computer.
When I was a child, every evening around the same time, one of the children would be asked to set the table, and then we'd go and wash our hands: before the meal. This was the time of day when we would talk about our day at school. But now things have changed a lot.
A family environment plays an important role for children in learning to communicate with others and understanding table manners, such as waiting for others to finish before leaving the table and not speaking with a mouth full of food. Parents’ likes and dislikes of a certain food will also influence a child's own likes and dislikes. Studies have shown that children who often eat with their families have better results at school than children who eat with their families less than twice a week.
Regular meal times give children the chance to discuss their problems with family members. They can also learn to respect others around the table. Talking to your children over dinner is the best way of having their-trust. Children learn good eating habits from their parents at a very young age. Family meals are important. Prepare them for your children.
1.Some families eat less together because __________.
A. most children live in a school
B. people are busy with their work

D. food in the restaurant is better
2.Children who often eat with their families _________.
A. turn out to do better in their studies
B. prefer to share food with others
C. show concerns about families
D. are interested in cooking
3.Which word can best describe the writer's attitude towards eating together with families?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Grateful.
4.Which would be the best title of the passage?
A. Table manners of a family B. The importance of meals
C. Why should the family eat together? D. How to choose food for your family?

Fourteen is not an age at which you try to earn millions of dollars. But for Bangalore boy, Suhas Gopinath, it was.
One day in August, 1999, Suhas, studying at the Air Force School in Hebbal, was surfing the Net at a cyber cafe. He happened to hit an MSN source code (源码). That made him decide to learn more about HTML (超文本标记语言) and to design and set up his own website under the address of a US-based company, Network Solutions.
He kept updating his website, posting interesting things on it. This impressed Network Solutions and they invited him to attend a class on Web design and development. His mom and uncle criticised him for not taking his education seriously. But gradually, his dad started encouraging him and even bought him a computer and Net connection. In fact, that was his first investment in the company.
On May 14, 2000, along with friends Clifford Leslie and Binay M. N, he floated (筹资开办) his own website — www.coolhindustani.com. He did not have the money to start, for his parents refused to give him a penny. So he wrote to Network Solutions Inc. in the US and they readily agreed.
In August, the same year, he set up Globals Inc., a Web solutions and networking company, with a team of four. Now, he has 400 employees, more than 200 customers across the globe and offices in 11 countries, and he is worth over $100 million.

Like many children, young Lotte Reiniger was crazy about movies, which at the time were a completely new invention. She taught herself how to cut paper silhouettes(剪影), of people, animals, and objects. I could cut silhouettes almost as soon as I could manage to hold a pair of scissors,” Reiniger said. “I could paint, too, and read...But everybody was surprised at the scissor cuts”
At first, Reiniger wanted to be an actress, but her skill at making silhouettes drew the attention of the German film industry. Before 1927, films were silent. To help the audience understand the film, title cards with printed text appeared during the film between scenes. Reiniger helped create title cards for films, using her silhouettes. In 1918, she was asked to provide stop-motion animation(定格动面), in which objects are photographed(拍摄)in a series of slightly different positions and then replayed at high speed so that the objects appear to move on their own, for wooden rats(老鼠)in the movie The Pied Piper of Hamelin. It was a breakthrough that led to her own films, first short films and then, in 1926, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the first full-length animated film.
Although Reiniger once described herself as “a primitive(原始的)caveman artist”, her work is not simple. She carefully cut bits of card, paper, and wire, creating wonderful shapes, and then made them move and dance by hand. The black shapes were then placed on colorful backgrounds. She made more than 60 films, around 40 of which survive, all cut by her own hands. Most were based on timeless fairy tales, like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
Reiniger was truly a pioneer both in animation and for women in film-making. Though her last film came out in 1980, her style is still influential and can often be seen in today’s films.

B. She cut silhouettes for title cards in films.
C. She broke up long films into shorter ones.
D. She made photos of the objects in the film.
3.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
