When my family moved to the United States from Colombia, I was 9 years old and knew little about English. As time passed, teachers finally knew all of their students and slowly everyone began to head inside, except for me. No one called out my name, and no one seemed to know I existed. I spent the next month in my new classroom quietly. I felt a wave of fear, loneliness and sadness came over me.
It turned out the school administration never cared that I didn't speak English, but something else was teaching me English. Every morning when my aunt drove me to school and picked me up, she always had 106.7 Light FM on. It was this station that introduced my young ears to the English sounds of R&B, soul, jazz and much more.
Because of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I learned the difference between "witch" and "which". While watching the TV show South Park, I was attracted by the funny characters. I related "You bastards!” to anger and saved it in my mental word bank. In fact, thanks to pop culture, the world of English became not so hard to me while it was being turned down at school.
I also learned how to express my emotions thanks to pop culture. One day at school, we were taking a math quiz and the whole class was quiet. Suddenly, the tip of my pencil broke and I yelled, “You bastards!" Everyone held their breath in surprise and I laughed to myself because something at that moment told me I had just learned my first bad word in English.
Four months passed before the school placed me into an ESL program. By this time, I was speaking broken English and making myself understood. Finally, I learned how to speak and write English at a more advanced level, and I owe it all to pop culture.

Hi, my name is Ethan King. I’m 14 years old and I love the game of soccer. In the summer of 2009, I went to northern Mozambique(Africa) with my dad to help repair water wells(井)in local villages. I took my soccer ball along. I thought I might be able to play with the local kids. When we arrived at the village of Ntette, I threw out my ball and soon, 50 kids were playing .Many of these kids had never had the chance to enjoy playing soccer with a real ball. For me, it’s no big deal to play soccer with a real ball. I do it all the time.
I’ve discovered that many kids in poor countries want to play soccer, but they can’t because they don’t have a ball. I have several soccer balls in my house. I thought that these kids would enjoy this soccer ball far more than me. So, I gave my ball to them.
As we prepared to leave, one of the boys brought the soccer ball back to me. I said to him, “No, this is yours. I gave it to you.” He laughed and cheered! I loved seeing that they had a real ball to play with.
Every kid who loves the game of soccer deserves(值得)to play. Every kid who loves the game of soccer deserves his or her own ball. And that’s why I started Charity Ball in 2010. It provides new soccer balls for kids in poor communities around the world.

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN (个人身份号码)to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制台), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How will I live without them?”

My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you’ve shared about life and positive energy has changed my life.
This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.
I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn’t until this March that I told myself “no more negativity (消极性)” as you taught readers in your blog.
Since then I’ve got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I’m the first face they see, so I smile big when I say “good morning” to them, especially on Monday. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive (行政的) assistant position that I wanted.
One of the biggest things I’ve taken to heart from your blog is changing my opinions on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.
All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care!
Sincerely,
Amber
