Boys are not so good at English when there are girls in their class, a research student said. This finding disagrees with the widely held belief that girls always have a good influence on boys in school.
Boys do best with as few girls as possible in English lessons at primary and secondary schools, Steven Proud, a research student at Bristol University, told the Royal Economic Society’s conference.
But when it comes to math and science, both boys and girls at primary schools achieve up to a tenth of a grade higher when there is a greater percentage of girls in the class, Proud found.
Proud kept a record of boys’ and girls’ test results at the ages of 7, 11, and 16 in 16,000 schools in England. He studied the test scores to see whether the percentage of girls made a difference to the results of both boys and girls in math, science and English.
Boys always perform worse when the number of girls they study English with increases, which is especially the case at primary schools. Proud also found that girls are unaffected by the number of boys in their English class.
Proud said boys may do worse in English when there is high proportion(比例) of girls in their class because they think that the girls are better than them. It could also be that teachers use teaching styles more appropriate(适合) to girls when there are more girls than boys in the class.
Proud argues that his results show boys should be taught English in single-sex classes.
However, Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, said, “Boys may be discouraged by how well girls are doing in English, but you can’t say that it means boys and girls should be separated. It has very little practical importance to schools.”

There are two ways to look at this question --- 1. relating to eggs in general or to the chicken egg specifically. Either way, the answer is the same: the egg came before the chicken. 2. the case of eggs in general, animals such as dinosaurs were laying eggs long before the modern chicken came into existence, 3. (mean) that in this sense, the egg predated (早于) the chicken by thousands of years. As for the chicken egg specifically , according to NPR’s Robert Krulwich, the modern chicken 4. The key to understanding the answer, and indeed the question itself, is to understand what the question is getting at. The dilemma is to understand 5. a chicken-like bird transformed into 6. is known as a modern chicken after being hatched or whether two chicken-like birds 7. (lay) and fertilized an egg that then hatched a fully formed chicken. In this case, the latter option is the most realistic, therefore answering the question of which came first. 8. After years of study, I have known there are only two types of people in this world: those who get to the airport early and those who arrive when the plane is about to take off.
If there were any justice(公正)in this world, early-airport people would be rewarded for doing the right thing. And late-airport people would be punished. But early-airport people get ulcers(溃疡), heart attacks and bite their fingernails to the bone. Late-airport people almost don’t realize they are flying.
A guy of that kind once said, “Don’t hurry. If you miss your flight, it’s because God doesn’t want you to go.” This is clearly a guy who is never going to get an ulcer.
Early-airport people suffer another “name”. They are called exactly what they are -wimps(窝囊废). I know. I was an early-airport person for years. “My baggage will get on the plane first,” I told myself. Indeed it would, which made it the last baggage they took off the plane after landing.
Another strange thing: No matter how early I showed up, I was always told that someone had called two or three years ahead of me and asked for the best seat. I thought it was a trick. I thought there was someone in America who called every airline every day and said: “Is that wimp Simon flying somewhere today? If he is , give me his seat.”
After a lifetime arguing with my wife over whether I really have to pack 24 hours in advance and set the alarm clock four hours ahead, I have learned another fact about early-airport people and late –airport people:
They always marry each other.

A.late-airport persons are often nervous |
B.early-airport persons are always at ease during the flight |
C.early-airport persons get their baggage first after the landing |

2. Paragraph 5 mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.someone always plays tricks on the writer |
B.the airlines usually fool passengers |
C.early-airport persons always can’t get good seats |
D.the service of airlines is very bad |
3.This passage is written in order to .
A.give readers tips about taking a plane |
B.offer suggestions about having a good plane trip |
C.express the writer’s anxiety about taking a plane |
D.show people’s different attitudes toward catching planes |
4. It could be inferred that the writer’s wife is ________.
A.an early-airport woman | B.a late-airport woman |
C.a hot-tempered woman | D.a sensitive woman |
