Last week, some German parents who took their kids out of school early were stopped by the police at the airport. The police were making reports on students who didn't have permission (许可) to miss school.
Like many places, it is against the law to skip (不参加) school in Germany. Children over the age of 9 can't miss classes without permission from the school. But during busy travel time, some parents take their children out of school early to save money on vacations. People can often save a lot of money on flights and hotels by going at a different time than others.
Last weekend was the beginning of an important holiday period in Germany. People in charge of the schools asked the police to check and make sure that students weren't leaving for vacations before they were allowed to.
Police officers at three German airports looked for families with school-aged children. When they found them, the police pulled the families out of lines to talk with them. They wanted to find out if the parents had permission for the children to be out of school. If the children did not have permission, the police reported the families to their schools and to the government. In all, the police reported about 20 families.
These families will have two weeks to show that it was okay for their children to miss school. If they can't, they may have to pay as much as $1,200 as a fine (罚款), or receive some other punishment.
Germany is not the only place where parents have to pay fines if their children miss school. Many other countries and many of the states in the U.S. have similar laws.
The good news is that the families were allowed to go on vacation after they talked to the police. But they might have a big bill waiting for them when they get back.

Lynne Edwards collects interesting materials for making quilts. She started making quilts many years ago, and is well known for this work at art centers around the world.
“When I see a piece of material I love, I must have it cut into shapes,” Lynne says.
Making quilts wasn’t the popular hobby as it is today. It started around the 18th century in America, when mothers and daughters at home wanted something to do. They spent days cutting and fitting small shapes together to hang on the wall. In those days, many people couldn’t afford much material. So they made simpler quilts for keeping themselves warm in winter. They cut larger square, rectangle (长方形), and triangle shapes. These shapes, or “patches (补丁)” , of material fitted together well, with very little waste of material.
In America, the “patchwork” had names like Bear’s Foot, Duck Tracks, and The Snowy Mountains. Each quilt told a story about the animals and the countryside where they were made. These old artworks are displayed, now, in museums and art shops where people copy the colors and shapes.
The skills to make quilts by hand were nearly lost in the early 20th century. More people had jobs in cities and the shops sold cheap new machine-made material for homes. People were too busy to cut material and join shapes together using their hands. In the late 20th century, people’s interest in old countryside hand skills helped in making homes look interesting. Making handmade quilts soon became the trend (趋势) of that time.
“It’s always better” says Lynne, “to make your own quilt by hand, or better still, with family. A handmade family quilt is special. Sharing quilt making with family is a social event. This is the one you want to keep forever.”

With air pollution making much difference to many of Chinese cities, parents are calling for the installation(安装) of air cleaners in classrooms. There has been much debate over whether air cleaners should be used in China’s schools. Some parents have donated cleaners to their children’s classrooms, while others raise money together to make the purchase(购买). “Our school bought air cleaners last year. We did a little fund raising, with each parent throwing in several hundred for that,” said one parent.
However, the idea of installing air cleaners for all the classes has been refused by some schools. Liu Liangcheng, vice-principal of Beijing’s Taipinglu Primary School, says installing air cleaners bought by parents may lead to problems. “We have refused air cleaners bought by parents before, as there are clear and strict rules against educational fees. We can’t just break the rules here. And without standard guidance (指示) from local authorities(权威部门), it is hard to decide on the brand of the cleaner, installation and even safety of the device(设备).”
Moreover, experts say air cleaners can cause other health problems. Deng Gaofeng who works for the China Academy of Building Research says. “ In the classroom, if we keep windows and doors closed, the concentrations (浓度) of CO2 will double from 1,000 PPM to some 2,000 PPM. According to national safety standards, the highest level should not be more than 1,500.” In addition, experts say air cleaners on the market are mostly designed for homes or offices. Evaluation(评估) is needed to know whether they are suitable in classrooms.
It seems whether air cleaners should enter China’s schools is an ongoing question. It still requires a more detailed plan.
