(2019河南C篇)Thousands of years ago, Britain was covered by thick forests, home to many animals which no longer live in the United Kingdom. There were wolves and bears, many different kinds of deer and large wild cows. There were less than four million people. They lived in small villages protected by wooden walls from the animals outside.
All this has changed, of course. Now the population of the United Kingdom has increased to sixtyfive million. Threequarters of Britain is covered with fields, towns or cities. Although 25 percent of land is countryside, new methods of farming mean that there are fewer birds and small animals living in fields than ever before. The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a large wild animal that eats meat. In Scotland there are only 400 wildcats, but these are much smaller than wolves.
Some people would like to change things, however! Some organizations and writers say that Britain needs to become more natural again. They suggest that trees and plants that grew in the UK before towns and cities were built should be allowed to grow again. They even say that large wild animals which have not lived in the UK should be helped to return and live wild. They call this “rewilding”.
Not everyone agrees. In the last twenty years, over one million trees which at first grew in Scotland have been planted and there are plans for more—but wild animals? Some people ask if wolves will attack sheep or even humans. They are also angry that rewilding might mean an end to walking in the hills which so many people enjoy. So far there are no wolves or bears in Britain's forests—but soon there might be!
Which paragraph gives opinions from “rewilding”supporters?
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens” of our earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to grow up safely. For example, many trees grow thorns to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty. It is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and look after the trees!

Wild beavers (河狸) are back! Experts say that the wild beaver families are doing well. The beavers are even boosting wildlife and the environment!
Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise, wild beavers hadn't lived in England for around 400 years!
In 2015, the government allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a trial (试验). They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The trial ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wildlife in the area. One scientist called it "an amazing story".
A lot of this is because of dams. Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers' dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.
There are, however, some problems. Beavers gnaw (咬,啃)on trees and this can harm them. Their dams can also sometimes create floods (洪水) on people's land.
Beavers aren't the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world's rarest (罕见的) duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.
Who knows what other animals might be making a comeback?

3.What are the good things about wild beavers living on the river Otter?
A.They help plants grow and make flooding less. B.They bring heavy rain and floods.
C.They gnaw on trees and harm them. D.Their dams create floods on people's land.
4.How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the news story which have been reintroduced to the wild?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.

Dolphins are my favorite animals. They live on fish, shrimps (虾) and so on. They are mammals (哺乳动物). Their babies are born in the water. They can grow up to three meters and a half as their parents. Dolphins live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. But they are quite different from almost all land animals. Their brain is as big as humans’, so they are very clever. People often train them so that they can give dolphin shows which can bring people lots of happiness and joy. Dolphins can live a long life—at least 20 or 30 years. Like some other animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also use these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. So sound is like their eyes and mouths. They do not use their ears to receive sounds, but use the jaws (下颚)- the lower part of the mouth.
Dolphins are friendly and peaceful. They never hurt people. Instead, they have saved many people in danger. For thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and humans. In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin. The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. In1903, a passenger on a boat with the name of “The Penguin” shot and hurt Jack. Luckily, the dolphin didn’t die, and after a long time, he was well again. He guides the boats through the area for nine more years, but he refused to help the boat “The Penguin”.
Unluckily, the number of the dolphins is getting smaller and smaller today. Some people still kill dolphins for money. If we don’t protect them, maybe we will lose our good friends one day. As a student, I hope more and more people should take action to protect dolphins.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误。正确的用“A”表示,不正确的用“B” 表示。
1.Dolphins are not only fish but also mammals.
2.Dolphins use their jaws to receive sounds.
3.Jack is a name of a seaman.
4.At last, Jack didn’t help the ship “The Penguin” any more.
