The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based Fare Start does. Not only does the charity provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.
In Seattle, 13.2% of people live below the poverty (贫穷) line since its beginning in 1999. Fare Start has grown, graduating 100 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid job within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those people still held their positions six months later.
At Fare Start, students begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes (菜谱) and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with helping in the kitchen preparing meals for people, the trainees (实习生) move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the Fare Start restaurant in downtown Seattle.
The practical skill-training and other support services allow successful graduates like Jayna. She lost her job as a nurse due to alcohol abuse. Since graduating from Fare Start, she has worked in a small house at Yellow stone National Park. She said, "I could not have put myself back together again. Fare Start did that for me."
Kevin is another success story. He found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving Fare Start, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through—including holding down his job for almost a year.
Going forward, Fare Start plans to shift more focus to women especially women with children.

As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”This is the way the charity organization Heifer International (国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was“not a cup, but a cow”.
Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.
On Heifer International’s website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源) for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female(雄性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on
working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

A well-known saying goes like this, “mind at peace give you coolness”. As the temperature rises day by day, it’s time to create some coolness besides keeping calm.
Chinese people have some traditional ways to reduce the summer heat without air-conditioners (空调). Such ways include healthy food and tools that also help people experience the beauty of summer. Here are some choices which will bring you a surprisingly cool experience.
The first one is plum juice(酸梅汤). It is a traditional healthy drink in summer in Beijing. It can reduce summer heat in the human body. People can have the juice all year round, yet summer is the best time.
The second is a bamboo mat. It is a lovely must-have that can cool your summer with a naturally nice smell. There are many sizes for beds and chairs and so on. It’s really comfortable to lie on a bamboo mat and drink some plum juice while watching TV in summer.
The last one is Chinese fans. Available in many shapes and materials, Chinese fans are special for the water-ink paintings they carry. Fans made of silk were often used by women, especially young unmarried ladies in ancient China. They used fans to hide their mouths or aces when they wanted to avoid showing shyness.
