On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet's middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing(记住)seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I decided to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don't do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay Dad, let's study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn't be too hard on her. So instead we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn't know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn't make sense. And she was actively looking for to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn't memorizing, she was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
1.Why did Juliet feel down?

B.Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.

Life as a teenager can be so hard. We are trying not to go wrong or get hurt while still trying to make sense of life. I tell you, I have been there. But, looking back, I will tell you how to enjoy every experience in life. Let this be your little guide to enjoying life as a teenager.
You know, half the problems as a teenager arise because we hate doing things. We’d rather go and have fun than sit down and take care of our duties and responsibilities. That is exactly why you have so much drama in your life; your parents won’t let you have a night-out with friends because you didn’t clean your room or your teacher is threatening to take you to the headteacher because you haven’t finished your homework.
When you go wrong, you go back to bed every night blaming yourself for the mistakes you have made. If you don’t make mistakes, you won’t learn. When you make a mistake, forgive yourself and move on. Don’t repeat them because there isn’t plenty of time to go wrong. Learn from your mistakes and others’, and it will help you to develop your character. Don’t try so hard to be right all the time, or you will not end up being satisfied with yourself.
Most of us want to be popular in school and so, you beg your parents to get you the best clothes, which they obviously don’t. To deal with that situation, I’d say that if your parent is not willing to pay for all those expensive clothes for you, get yourself a part-time job or spend your money wisely. No matter what you do, you should take full responsibility for your own choices. And, instead of trying to be one of the crowd by having similar habits, dare to be different because not everyone does.
Most teenagers often tend to have the blues during the teenage years. If you think that ending your life would be better than dealing with all the depression, you are not alone. All we need is someone to talk to us and listen. So, find a listener. Just talking it through helps get rid of the stress of school, friends and everything else. You shouldn’t really be wasting your time when you time when you could develop your hobbies and interests!
I wish someone had given me all these tips to enjoy life as a teenager. In your teenage years, life is all about experiences and learning from them, so enjoy every bit of it to the fullest.

Learning English grammar and English vocabulary can be hard enough, but trying to understand English sayings can be more difficult. Some are just hard to figure out and others don’t make any sense at all. Here are four funny English sayings that you can use every day.
I’m happy as a clam(蛤).
Think of a clam. It doesn’t have to do anything. It just sits on a beach or on the bottom of the ocean all day doing nothing. It never has to work. That sounds like happiness, doesn’t it? If someone asks, “How are you today?” you can answer “I am happy as a clam” to let him or her know what a great mood you are in.
I wouldn’t touch that (or him/her) with a ten-foot pole.
Maybe there is a person who you don’t want to be friends with or even talk to. Well, this saying means that you dislike him or her so much that you don’t want to touch or go near him or her, even within ten feet!
You don’t have a leg to stand on.
This saying doesn’t mean that the person you’re talking to has no legs. It means that his or her argument is incorrect. He or she doesn’t have a leg to stand on because he or she has no facts to support what he or she is saying. This saying is a good way to tell people that you think they’re wrong.
Break a leg!
This saying actually means the opposite of what it sounds like. If you tell this to a person, you’re wishing him or her good luck! The saying comes from a superstition(迷信) that whatever you say aloud, the opposite will come true.
1.The first paragraph mainly tells us____________________.
A.learning English grammar is hard
B.learning English vocabulary is hard
C.we should use English sayings every day
D.it can be harder to understand English sayings
2.Which of the following is TRUE about a clam?
A.It can be used to show happiness. B.It needs to do many things.

A.I hate him. B.I want him to be my friend.
C.I like him. D.I want to argue with him.
4.We can learn from the passage that______________________.
A.the saying “You don’t have a leg to stand on” means someone loses his legs
B.the saying “Break a leg” means someone hurts his or her leg
C.if we say “Break a leg” to someone, we give him or her a good wish
D.if we say “I am ill” aloud, we will become healthy

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see. She was an old woman, sitting on her bed, trying to put socks on her swollen(肿胀的)feet. I walked in, spoke quickly to the nurse, and saw from her chart that she was in a good condition.
She asked if I could help put on her socks. Instead, I started a monologue(长篇大论):"How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure are also good today. The nurse said you're anxious to see your son who's visiting you today from far away. I believe you really look forward to seeing him."
She stopped me with a serious voice. "Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story."
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She told me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him for five years. She believed that the big stress of this was a big reason for her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do. She shook her head and smiled. All she had wanted me to do was listen.
Each story is different. Some are detailed; others are vague(含糊的). Some are true; others not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard.
1.What does the writer do?
A.A nurse. B.A doctor. C.An actor. D.A reporter.
2.What was wrong with the old woman according to her chart?
A.Her blood pressure was much higher. B.Her sugars were lower than before.
C.There was nothing wrong with her. D.She couldn't put on her socks.
3.Which can replace(替代)the underlined word "anxious" in Para.2?
A.Nervous. B.Surprised. C.Sorry. D.Upset.
4.What can you learn from the passage?
A.We should meet a clever doctor. B.We should try to tell true stories.
C.We should be patient to old people. D.We should learn to listen to others.
