Confucius, a famous teacher, was a politician and philosopher who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period”. During his lifetime, he planted the seeds for China’s transformation by teaching thousands of people. Today, he is thought to be one of the world’s greatest teachers.
Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was to learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more. He didn’t like the way rulers treated their subjects. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline. For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Although he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings. Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.

Confucius’ life and thought
Confucius(551—479 BC) was a great thinker and teacher in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu (part of Shandong). He acted as an official(官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important for a healthy society. However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty(156-87 BC) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues(美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren(kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li(ceremony, tradition), zhi(knowledge), and xin(trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying(服从), and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.
Here’s one of Confucius’ famous sayings, “Do not do to others as you do not wish to be done to you.” Another saying of his is “In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher.”

Confucius, one of the most important Chinese philosophers, was celebrated across the country for his 2,570th birthday in September 2019. After all these years, his influence is still strong in modern times.
Unlike the abstract philosophy of Laozi, Confucian idea about right and wrong are ways to understand and apply to daily life. "It's all about the every day. It's all about family," Roger Ames, a Fonfucius expert at Peking University, told China Daily.
For example, many Chinese learn at an early age to "be filial to parents and respectful to brothers( 入则孝,出则悌)". Confucius believed that if everyone knows how to love their families, they will know how to love others, love their country, and love the world.
"Don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you." is the favourite Confucius doctrine( 信条)of Guo Jiulin, a professor at Dalian Minzu University. "It reminds me that if a person wants to fulfill his social ambitions(抱负), he must first be strict with himself in words and deeds," he told China Daily.
Another important Confucian idea is "he", or harmony, Sun Yiting, a student from Zhejiang University, values it. "It reminds me to calm down when I get angry," she said. "It reminds me to put myself in others' shoes. This way of thinking makes my life much happier."
Confucian ideas can even be applied to today's global problems, according to Ames.
"Confucius believed that the only way I can take my stand is by helping other people take theirs(己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人). If my neighbour does better, I do better. That's the Confucian wisdom. This is really needed in the world today," said Ames.
"Global warming, food and water shortages, environmental problems, international terrorism(恐怖主义). We can solve these problems only if we work together."
