“Don’t answer it,” I said to Sam. Our door in the inner city is constantly knocked on; our previous door in the suburbs rarely so. Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank.
Sam opened the door and it was Mervin.
“There’s a bird on the second floor,” he said. “It’s in trouble.”
Sam followed Mervin upstairs. Mervin pointed and turned to let Sam look. It was a pigeon, the most common of all birds, the bird most likely to foul (弄脏) your newly washed car. And
it wasn’t flying away. It was stamping in circles. As Sam bent to look, Mervin coughed, “Number two.”
Sam asked him to repeat that. “Number two,” Mervin said. "The pigeon has been sitting in his own number two, and now it’s stuck to his foot.”
It had rained for five days, and the bird was young. It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away. The pigeon moved in a few more circles. Sam bent to take another look. Mervin said, “All right, then.” and walked away.
“Why does everyone think you must solve the problems around here?” I said to Sam when he returned with his story. “It’s a bird. Just leave it on the stairs, and let nature take its course.” Sam didn’t agree. Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it.
They put its foot in the warm water bath and got rid of its waste. Immediately the pigeon erupted in a bomb of feathers and began flying.
1.How did the author feel about the knocks?
A.She felt bored. B.She was frightened.
C.She got excited. D.She was surprised.
2.Why was the pigeon moving in circles?
A.It was learning to fly.
B.It was badly injured.
C.It got caught in the rain.
D.It was trapped by its waste.
3.What did Sam use the cardboard box to do?
A.Shelter from rain.
B.Give it to Mervin.
C.Wash camping mats.
D.Make a nest for the bird.
4.What can we learn about Sam from the text?
A.He was brave. B.He was clever.
C.He was warm-hearted. D.He was easy-going.

It is widely believed that smiling means a person is happy, and it usually occurs when they're meeting another person or a group of people. However, a new study led by the body language expert Dr. Harry Witchel shows this isn't always the case.
In his research, he asked 44 participants aged 18-35 to play a geography quiz game consisting of nine difficult questions so that they often got the answer wrong. Participants seated interacted with a computer alone in a room while their faces were video recorded.
After the quiz, the participants were asked to rate their experience using a range of 12 emotions including “bored”, “interested” and “frustrated”. Meanwhile, their facial expressions were then computer analysed frame by frame in order to judge how much they were smiling based on a scale of between 0 to 1.
Dr Witchel said: “According to some researchers, a real smile reflects the inner state of cheerfulness or amusement. However, behavioral ecology theory suggests that all smiles are tools used in social interactions, meaning cheerfulness is neither necessary nor rich for smiling. Our study showed that in these human-computer interaction experiments, smiling isn't driven by happiness; it is associated with subjective involvement(主观参与),which acts like a social fuel for smiling, even when socializing with a computer on your own.”
Surprisingly, participants didn't tend to smile during the period when they were trying to figure out the answers. However, they did smile right after the computer game informed them if their answer was correct or wrong. Participants smiled more often when they got the answer wrong. Dr. Witchel added: “During these computerized quizzes, smiling was greatly increased just after answering questions incorrectly. This behavior could be explained by self-ratings of engagement, rather than by ratings of happiness or frustration.”
1.Why did Dr Witchel use difficult questions in the quiz game?
A.To make it hard for participants to answer them correctly.
B.To make the answer period last as long as possible.
C.To discover the most intelligent participants.
D.To create a stressful situation for participants deliberately.
2.What can we infer from idea of Behavioral Ecology Theory?
A.Other researchers' opinion of a real smile is quite right.
B.Smiles aren't necessarily useful tools in social interactions.
C.It is not associated with subjective engagement.
D.Smiling is usually connected with social activities.
3.What do we know about the text?
A.Participants were asked to interact with each other in the quiz.
B.Participants in the quiz smiled less often when they got the answer wrong.
C.In Dr Witchel's opinion, smiling is connected with subjective involvement.
D.Dr Witchel thinks that a real smile reflects the inner state of cheerfulness.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What Contributes to Real Happiness? B.How to Identify Whether a Person Is Really Happy?
C.Smiling Doesn't Necessarily Mean Happiness D.People Generally Hold a Wrong View on Happiness

As a teacher we all have those memories of students—we wonder if we were able to teach or reach those students who had a need to get out of their seats every five minutes or so.
I recently received an e-mail from one such student, Paco. Paco’s e-mail brought back memories of one particular (特别) class.
In our high school’s first year, our classes were 80 minutes long instead of the traditional 40 minutes. On this particular day, I was being observed by two college professors. Of course, I was proud of the fact that the class was conducted entirely in Spanish and the students felt comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish.
On that day, Paco came running through the door with a toasted cheese sandwich in hand, saying “Senora Mike. I’m hungry and I hope you don’t mind if I just quickly eat this great toasted cheese sandwich.” I said, “Go ahead, Paco.” Paco sat down and finished his sandwich. Paco had now noticed our two visitors. Of course, our two visitors noticed Paco the minute he ran through the door.
The lesson was going along quite well, and all the students were working in their groups. Suddenly, Paco raised his hand and said, “Senora, esta lloviendo en mis pantalones.” (“Mrs. Mike, it is raining in my trousers.”) Now, being Paco’s Spanish teacher, I understood what he wanted. I knew that it was his way of requesting to go to the bathroom. You could just imagine the laughter from the other students.
I always wonder just how much Spanish Paco learned in that class, but I know he learned more than just Spanish based on an e-mail he recently wrote to me:
I know I didn’t behave myself but you actually cared. You knew I had potential (潜力). So even though I messed up a lot, you never gave up... I’m deeply thankful to you for everything you taught me about Spanish. My attitude and life will stick with me the rest of my day...
You see, Paco was my student ten years ago.
1.What can be inferred about Paco?
A.He did well in his lessons. B.He didn’t behave well enough.
C.He didn’t see the two professors. D.He showed no respect for his teacher.
2.Why did Paco raise his hand in class?
A.To have his classmates laugh. B.To give a suggestion.
C.To answer a question. D.To make a request.
3.Why did Paco write an e-mail to the author?
A.To express his thanks. B.To ask for help.
C.To make an apology. D.To tell him his success.
4.What does the author intend to tell us by writing the text?
A.How to teach a successful lesson. B.How to get on well with students.
C.A teacher’s influence on students. D.Students’ attitude to their teachers.

Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.
Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be sign that it is negatively (消极地) influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.
1.How did the Vascellaros feel about the test results?
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Surprised.
2.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5?
A.To encourage people to live simple life.
B.To ask people if they use phones too much.
C.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.
D.To show the importance of close relationships.
3.How did Lind Seal probably look at the app?
A.She worried about it.
B.She was in favor of it.
C.She felt it was a waste of time.
D.She thought it needed improvements.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.Too much use of smartphones.
B.The influence of apps on teens.
C.Children’s safety on the Internet.
D.Problems among family members.

Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The classic film The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location(位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located.
The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater had shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.

A.It made room for new equipment. B.It marked the 75th anniversary of the theater.
C.It was done with the help of the audience. D.It signaled the close down of the theater.
2.Why was The Last Picture Show put on?
A.It was an all-time classic. B.It was about the history of the town.
C.The theater owner found it suitable. D.The audience requested it.
3.What will probably happen to the building?
A.It will be repaired. B.It will be knocked down.
C.It will be turned into a museum. D.It will be sold to the city government.
4.What can we infer about the audience?
A.They are sad to part with the old theater. B.They are disappointed with Bradford.
C.They are supportive of the city officials. D.They are eager to have a shopping center.

The world's best largest bicycle park
Ector Hoogstad Architecten has completed a three-storey bicycle park to store 12,656 bikes below Utrecht Central Station in the Netherlands.
The project begins as part of a wider redevelopment of the area surrounding the city's railway station, and is designed to enable cyclists to ride from the street level to the bike store, from which they can quickly access the station. It is hoped that the project will encourage locals to commute (通勤) using bikes and public transport instead of cars and make Utrecht a more sustainable(可持续的) city.
''Our comfortable bicycle parking is the answer to a major problem in the inner cities worldwide:pollution,'' explained the Rotterdam architecture studio. ''We created such a park that favors cyclists and pedestrians and make scar useless attractive.''
Ector Hoogstad Architecten won a competition to design the bike park at Utrecht Central Station in 2011.The first phase was finished in August of 2017, opening with space for 6,000 bikes. Now completed, the bike park accommodates three levels of underground stores for 12,656 bicycles-overtaking the world's former largest bike parking lot in Tokyo that houses 9,000.
Besides the storage, the project has a repair service and a bicycle hire shop. It also relies on a digital system to guide cyclists to a parking spot that provides the quickest access to the platforms.
The three-storey bike parking sits directly below Utrecht Central Station, accessed by pink cycle lanes(车道) that continue down inside and wraparound the edges of the structure.
The bike lanes connect to the parking across three levels. They are also color-coded(用颜色区分的) to guide cyclists through the space and to their parking lot.
Each parking spot branches off from the cycle paths, designed to provide plenty of space for people to dismount from their bikes without getting in the way of other cyclists. The concept is about speed and safety.
''The building is more than just the basic service system,'' added Ector Hoogstad Architecten. ''It adds an exciting and surprising architectural aspect to the city. Cycling through the garage has become a unique experience-not just another part of everyday life in the city, but almost an attraction in its own right. ''
