If you’re looking at Mercer’s top 20 livable cities as inspiration for your holiday, you would miss out many great places. According to Mercer’s latest Quality of Living Survey, Moscow ranks 167 and Beijing only 119, yet both provide visitors great pleasures. Meanwhile high-ranked cities such as Kobe or Seattle may be easy places to live in, but offer little excitement to tourists.
Actually, many of the world’s most livable cities are a little dull. The world isn’t dashing to visit Canberra or Montreal. In fact, none of the world’s 10 most visited cities appear in Mercer’s top 20. Obviously, considerations for enjoyable holiday hotspots are different from those that make cities comfortable places to live in.
This should be no surprise, since the various livability lists aren’t concerned with tourists or even native people. Mercer, for example, is a Britain-based consulting company whose lists provide multinationals with information about where to start their businesses. “The success of international business is mainly influenced by necessary things such as ease of travel, communication, personal safety and good public services,” says Slagin Parakatil, who leads Mercer’s research. “In short, Mercer’s rating is mainly determined by whether the cities are attractive to businesses, and have good schools, hospitals and nice offices.”
Still, Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey has its uses for tourists, since it also looks at natural and cultural environments and entertainments. It ranks public transport and infrastructure (基础设施) particularly high, a consideration shared by the World Economic Forum in reports on tourism and travel competitiveness. This includes hotels, rental-cars and even ATM numbers, all of which make a place friendly to businesses and visitors.

C.Native businessmen. D.Consulting organizations.
3.What is important to both businesses and tourists?
A.Big banks. B.Good hospitals
C.Nice schools. D.Easy public transport.
4.What does the author say about Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey?
A.It has little use for tourists and businessmen.
B.It may not be the best guidance for tourists.
C.It ranks business environments too high.
D.Businesses and tourists can rely on it for plans.

Looking out across the city and on top of the tall buildings before you are cows. Yes, you read that right. Farm animals are eating grass on high-rise urban farms on top of high buildings in London. Elsewhere, off the coast of mainland England, against the background of extremely beautiful White Cliffs of Dover, a wonderful pod (吊舱) structure forms part of floating city. This is how we will live 100 years from now — if a group of UK experts to be believed.
Temporary housing pods, underwater cities and 3D-printed houses will also help reduce the burden of overpopulation and inner city living-space shortages. Building with their own microclimates and cities built in the skies are also among the amazing achievements of future engineering predicted by experts.
But not only today’s architects continue to advance towards the clouds, building higher and higher, as engineering advances allow, but we’ll also be headed deep below ground. Meanwhile, the future will feature city-spanning (跨城市) bridges. Want to travel to Mars quickly? No problem — the experts are predicting spaceports (宇航基地) will become common places, so future generations will be able to head over to their local station and hitch (搭顺风车) the next ride.
The predictions were heavily focused on water - based architecture and present problems such as overpopulation, global warming and rising sea levels. Using the future tech predictions, 2,000 people were then surveyed to see which of the suggestions they thought — and hoped — would become a reality by 2115. Topping the survey was super-deep basement buildings complete with hotels, restaurants, green space, swimming pools and gyms. The survey also found that one in three respondents (调查对象) considered floating sea cities — which could use solar and tidal (潮汐的) energy — as a choice for future development.

Everyone has good days and bad days.
Sometimes, you feel as if you’re on top of the world. But occasionally you feel horrible, and you lose things and you cannot focus on your schoolwork.
For more than 20 years, scientists have suggested that high self-esteem (自尊) is the key to success. Now, new research shows that focusing just on building self-esteem may not be helpful. In some cases, having high self-esteem can bring bad results if it makes you less likeable or more upset when you fail at something.
“Forget about self-esteem,” says Jennifer Crocker, a psychologist (心理学家) at the University of Michigan, US. “It’s not the important thing.”
Feeling good
Crocker’s advice may sound a bit strange because it is good to feel good about yourself.
Studies show that people with high self-esteem are less likely to be depressed, anxious, shy, or lonely than those with low self-esteem.
But, after reviewing about 18,000 studies on self-esteem, Roy Baumeister, a psychologist at Florida State University, has found that building up your self-esteem will not necessarily make you a better person.
He believes that violent and wicked (邪恶的) people often have the highest self-esteem of all. He also said: “There’s no evidence that kids with high self-esteem do better in school.”
Problems
All types of people have problems. People with high self-esteem can have big egos (自我) that can make them less likeable to their peers(同龄人), said Kathleen Vohs, a psychology professor at Columbia University.
People with high self-esteem tend to think more of themselves, Vohs says. People with low self-esteem are more likely to rely on their friends when they need help.
What to do
Researchers say it is best to listen to and support other people. Find positive ways to contribute to society. If you fail at something, try to learn from the experience. “The best therapy (药方) is to recognize your faults,” Vohs says. “It’s OK to say, ‘I’m not so good at that,’ and then move on.”

A. is not important at all
B. may not be the key to success
C. has taken on a different meaning
D. does not help you do better at school
2.One of the conclusions of the new research is that ________.
A. people with high esteem tend to be proud
B. people with high esteem usually do not seek other’s help
C. feeling good about oneself doesn’t mean you lead a happier life
D. people with low esteem are often more popular
3.The underlined part “a better person” in the passage probably means a person who is ______.
A. helpful and supportive B. gentle and modest
C. likable and successful D. friendly and kind
4.From the text, we can infer the best therapy mentioned in the last paragraph is mainly for people ________.
A. of all kinds
B. with low self-esteem
C. with high self-estee

If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a “lesson” in sorting garbage (垃圾分类), as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting rules.
It’s now required that people should sort garbage into four groups, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.
More cities are introducing similar rules, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People’s Daily.
According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment.
However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants(参加者) said they think they are adequately sorting their garbage, the study noted.
According to Xinhua News Agency, it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some garbage rules didn’t give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage.
“It’s a must to have a legal guarantee (法律保障) to support garbage sorting,” Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily.
Liu Xinyu, a researcher of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told China Daily that the importance of the new rules in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone.
Besides China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting rules. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time to deal with each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and being sentenced in prison.
In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific groups, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow dustbins for plastic and metals and blue dustbins for paper and cardboard.
1.What do we know about garbage sorting in Shanghai?
A.People should put their garbage into two groups.
B.People will be fined 200 yuan each time they break the rules.
C.Shanghai is the first city to introduce garbage-sorting rules in the world.
D.It sets an example for many other cities in China.
2.What does the underlined phrase “result in” mean?
A.put off B.lead to C.turn in D.cut down
3.The main point of the passage is
A.Why garbage sorting is important.
B.How other countries sort garbage.
C.Garbage sorting has started in China.
D.The world’s garbage problem is becoming worse.
