Everyone, likes to feel that he or she is special. Unfortunately, many of us grow up believing that we’re not special at all. We wish that we could be better at sports or more attractive. We wish we had nicer clothes or more money. Like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz (《绿野仙踪》), we believe we’re not good enough just as we are. In the movie, the Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain. The Tin Man wishes he had a heart, and the Lion wants courage. In the end, each of them realizes that he already has what he needs.
Most parents want us to be the best we can be. They sometimes try to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They mean well, but the message we often get is that we’re not good enough. We begin to believe that the only way we can be special is by being better than someone else, but we are often disappointed. There will always be someone out there who is better than we are at something. There are plenty of people around who may not be as smart as we are but who are better at sports. Or they may not be as good-looking, but they have more money. It is impossible for us to be better than everyone else all the time.
Like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, we all want what we believe will make us better people. What we don’t realize is that often we already have inside us the very things that we seek. Parents sometimes forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good enough just as we are. Maybe no one told them that when they were growing up, or maybe they just forgot. Either way, it’s up to us to remind them from time to time that each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are ... is enough.

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with.
In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, to praise and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to what they care about.
1. People who volunteer spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal centre to help improve the treatment of animals.
Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out new skills and explore career choices. 2.
Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Andrew didn’t spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He travelled to an orphanage(孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America. 3. And it depends on volunteers to stay open.
Andrew doesn’t speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn’t a problem, “You communicated with love,” according to an article on his university’s website. And what he gave out, he got back, “4.” Andrew’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back soon — because he saw love and hope.
US author Sherry Anderson once wrote, “5.” And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do — their work is “priceless”.
A.It is in one of the poorest parts of the country.
B.You could see love when you looked in their eyes.
C.Volunteering means choosing to work without being paid.
D.It’s a chance for poor children to get better care and support.
E.Life will be difficult, but I have the confidence to live a happy, full life.
F.For young adults, valuable lessons may also be learned through volunteering.
G.Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.

You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.
But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.
Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff.
In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially(潜在地) dangerous people, places, and activities.
Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary(恐怖的) books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster(过山车)ride.
Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.
Fear fills our brain with healthy chemical substances, especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.
In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.
“Watch people walking out of a haunted (闹鬼的) house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives (击掌),” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.
People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.
“You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.
1.Why is a scary roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the passage?
A.It improves people's ability to live in the modern world.

New research shows the number of suicide(自杀)is increasing among young people. Between 2007 and 2015, the number of U. S. teenagers who visited hospitals because of suicidal thoughts or ideas doubled. In 2007, the number of visits was 580,000; by 2015, that number had increased to 1.12 million, reports CNN.
The fact that so many young people fight with depression (沮丧) and suicidal thoughts every day is shocking. But new research may allow us to look into the differences between the development of depression in boys and girls.
Researchers found that there are big differences between the development of depression for boys and girls. Girls seemed to develop depression at a faster speed and hit the highest levels of depression at an earlier age. For boys, the most rapid increase of depression happened at age 16. 4, while girls' biggest increase came at 13. 5 years.
There's no exact answer for these differences. But expert Arash Emamzadeh says that a general increase in depression during teenage time is possibly "because teenagers face many changes during this period such as puberty(青春期) , school transition(过渡) and forming friendships. "
As for girls experiencing depression at an earlier age, Emamzadeh writes, "One possible explanation for this difference is the earlier puberty in girls compared with boys. "
Finding a solution is not easy. However, if schools, parents and teenagers make efforts at the same time, things will certainly be better. Students in schools need to be helped to deal with problems both in their daily lives and study. Less stress is supposed to be put on teenagers' shoulders by parents. Proper communication between teenagers and parents is necessary. Teenagers should keep optimistic and look on the bright side of life.
