For over 40 years, gaokao has not only affected individual students, but also has had a significant impact on national development.
In a move to fix talent shortages in the high-end chip, software design, intelligent technology, new materials and advanced manufacturing and social sciences, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced a new college enrollment plan — called the “strengthening basic disciplines plan (强基计划)” — that will start this year.
The pilot plan has been rolled out in the country’s top 36 universities. By May 13, all schools had released their distinctive enrollment plans, encouraging senior high students with special talents to sign up.
Before the end of May, students can apply to one of the 36 participating universities. Enrollment policies vary by university, with admission limits set from dozens of students to 200.
These universities also detailed their recruitment procedure.
After the results of gaokao are released, schools will release lists of qualifying students, who either excel in gaokao, or have won first or second prizes in Olympiads with gaokao scores at least higher than the first round of register lines. These applicants will then receive additional tests and interviews. The final enrollment decision is heavily based on the gaokao score, which will remain the most important criterion (标准), accounting for more than 85 percent of the final result, says MOE.
The universities have announced that they will also consider physical tests as a reference for submission (录取), according to China Youth Daily.
Once the students are enrolled, they are expecting an intensive educational program. For example, Tsinghua University has set up five schools, offering courses in chemical biology, information and computing science, theory and applied mechanics as their dominant disciplines. The university’s goal is to “put admitted students in small, independent classes with the best and most specific teaching resources and learning environments for their discipline”, according to Yu Xiaoxiao, the director of admission at Tsinghua University.
Compared to the previous independent university enrollment scheme (高校自主招生计划), under which some students could either gain admission without taking gaokao or be awarded bonus points in the exam, “the new plan positively facilitates diverse, efficient and scientific progress in Chinese college admissions,” noted China.org.

Recently, a new law in Arizona requires high school students to pass the United States’ citizenship test. There’re 100 questions on US history and government in the test.
The Joe Foss Institute helped created the law. They want to pass a law in each of the 50 states to require high school student to pass the test.
A 2010 national test showed only about 25 percent of students in their final year of high school had a good understanding of American government. Thirty-six percent did not have even a basic understanding.
“That’s a shame, and it’s not only a shame.” Said John Hale, the Associate Director of the Center for Civic Education California. Mr. Hale thinks it is dangerous when citizens do not know or care about how their government works. He says students do not only to learn facts about government. They should also learn how to take part in their communities. “Requiring high school student to take the test might be a way to improve students’ civic behavior,” he says.
But some wonder if a test young people take in high school will make adults more active in their communities.
Sam Stone writes reports for the Joe Foss Institute. He says research shows that civic education does result in more involved adults. He noted a 2012 survey found that the more young people studied civics in high school, the more likely they were to get actively involved in their communities.
In another state, Virginia, many people are against the test. Meg Gruver is the president of the Virginia Education Association. She says students already take classes in civics and US history. And, she says, schools should not have to pay more for the test.
Sam Stone agrees. He says his organization is paying for an online testing website. Schools can use the website to give the test for free.
1.The US citizen test________.
A. is a required test all over America
B. was created by the Joe Foss Institute
C. helps students understand America government
D. has been included in American law for five years
2.What might John Hale agree with?
A. How the US government works should not be open to the public.
B. It’s a shame that the US government is unpopular with students.
C. Community activities outweigh facts about the US government.
D. The US citizenship test will be good for students and society
3.The result of the 2012 survey_________.
A. was different from Sam Stone’s findings
B. showed civics helped students become more active citizen
C. showed it was hard for more young people to pass the civics test
D. showed students were as interested as adults in their government
4.What did Meg Gruber think of the citizen test?
A. Uninteresting B. Unsatisfying
C. Acceptable D. Fair

Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things
For most high school students, free periods (课,节) are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework. 1.. This makes it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.
2.. Now is the time for us students to choose a suitable one. We will experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don’t try it.
In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窑). 3.. Now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.
4.! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.
Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. 5..
A. Our school offers many classes
B. We should find out what we are good at
C. I’ve avoided anything related to art since then
D. Instead, many are on their phones and talking
E. I found out that I have no artistic ability at all
F. Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things
G. The classes we choose can influence us in the future

The U.S. high school dropout rate has fallen in recent years, with the number of dropouts declining from 1 million in 2012 to about 750,000 in 2016, according to a new study released on Tuesday. The number of “dropout factories" — high schools in which fewer than 60 percent of freshmen graduate in four years—declined significantly during the same period.
"Clear progress is being made," said Bob Wise, a former West Virginia governor who heads the Alliance for Excellent Education, one of the organizations that published the study. “It’s not a total success yet. We shouldn't take a victory lap. But we can at least start warming up.”
Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said the improving graduation rate serves as evidence that the nation's public schools are making progress. But there are many reasons that graduation rates can rise, and not all of them have to do with stronger schools preparing more students for life after high school.
Alabama, for example, made outsize gains in 2014: Its graduation fate jumped more than six percentage points, the second-biggest increase in the nation. But the increase coincided with a policy change that took in the same year: Alabama students no longer had to pass a high school exit exam to earn a diploma. So what looks like a major improvement stemmed at least in part from easier requirements.
It is also not clear how many students are graduating with the skills they need for the workplace or for college. Graduation requirements vary widely across states, and many states offer multiple levels of diplomas with different requirements.
Arizona students can earn a standard diploma that requires four courses in math, four in English and three in science, according to Achieve, a nonprofit organization that has studied graduation requirements in each state. But Arizona students also can earn a “Grand Canyon" diploma, which requires just two courses each in math, science and English—less than many colleges require for admission.
1.The passage is meant to say that .
A.there are few dropouts in U. S. high schools
B.the U.S. high school dropout rate has fallen
C.the number of “dropout factories" has increased
D.the number of high school students is increasing
2.The underlined phrase “coincided with" in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by .
A.led to B.agreed with C.conflicted with D.contradicted with
3.What do we know about the “Grand Canyon" diploma in Arizona?
A.Students need to put more efforts into it.
B.It's much required for colleges in Arizona.
C.Students who get it won't necessarily be admitted to colleges.
D.It' s more difficult to get than a standard diploma.

Subject: My school
Hi, Li Zijun,
Thanks very much for your email. I really enjoyed reading it. I think we have a lot in common. I wonder if our school life is similar too.
I go to a big high school in Sydney called Maylands High School. There are about 1000 students and 80 or so teachers. My class has 25 students in it, which is normal for a Year 11 class. In the junior school there are about 30 students in a class.
In the senior high school we have lots of subjects to choose from, like maths, physics, chemistry, biology, history, German, law, geography, software design, graphic arts and media studies. (Different schools sometime have different optional subjects.) English is a must for everyone and we have to do least three other subjects in Year 11 and 12. At the end of Year 12 we sit for a public exam called the High School Certificate.
As well as school subjects, most of us do other activities at school such as playing a sport, singing in the choir or playing in the school band. We can also belong to clubs, such as the drama club, the chess club and the debating society.
We have a lot of homework to do in senior school to prepare for our exam, so unless I have basketball practice, I usually go straight home and start studying. I arrive home about 4 pm, make myself a snack and work till 6. Then I help the family to make dinner and we all eat together. I’m usually back in my room studying by 8 pm. I stop at about 10 o’clock and watch TV or read a book for half an hour to relax. On Saturdays, I usually go out with my family or with friends and I sleep in till late on Sunday morning. Then it’s back to the books on Sunday afternoon.
How about you? What’s your school life like? Do you have a lot of homework? What do you do to relax when you’re not studying? I’m looking forward to finding out.
Your Australian friend
Terrie
