When I lived in Spain(西班牙), some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me to give them some advice about how to find accommodation(住所). I suggested that they should stay at "bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends followed my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
"We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses, " they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday."
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought "VACANCIES" meant "holidays", because the Spanish word for
"holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to houses where the sign outside said "VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said "NO VACANCIES", because they thought this meant the people who owned the houses were not away on vacation. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word "DIVERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Merci", which means "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise, the coffee pot was taken away! Later
I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No, thank you."
1.The writer's Spanish friends wanted to know before they went to England.
A.how to find a place to stay in
B.how to memorize English words
C.how to drive on English roads
D.how to behave at the dinner table.
2.According to the passage, which of the following is true about the writer's Spanish friends?
A.They learned quite a lot of funny stories in England.
B.They had trouble understanding the English language.
C.Most of their families were also on vacation with them.
D.They found some strange signs on the streets in England.
3.In England, a house with the sign "NO VANCANCIES" outside means .
A.its owner isn't away on holiday
B.an accident has happened in it
C.none of its rooms are available
D.there are some free rooms in it
4.If you see the road sign "DIVERTION" in England, .

When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn’t let that happen.
Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. Clark was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said, “You’re all going.”
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and created a bestseller based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages (孤儿院). It was the most amazing experience of my life. It’s now my dream to one day start a group of women’s clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.
1.Without Mr. Clark, the writer _________.
A. might have put into prison B. might not have won the prize

C. a classroom rule D. a bestseller
3.How many students’ names were finally drawn out of a hat by Mr. Clark?

C. Fifty-five D. All
4.In the passage, the writer intends to tell us that ___________.
A. Mr. Clark went to South Africa because he liked traveling

Having been translating some of the most valuable ancient Chinese literary works to Spanish(西班牙语) for years, Alicia Relinque has found the key to happiness in her life. When asked by a reporter, “It is the Chinese literature,” said Relinque, a modest and peaceful teacher.
She easily becomes excited when talking about Chinese culture and classic(经典的) literature. Relinque’s translation works include The Peony Pavilion(牡丹亭) by Tang Xianzu in the 16th century --- a romantic play about a love story, and The Orphan of Zhao --- a drama written in the 13th century similar to Hamlet, which are excellent classic works in Chinese culture.
When translating a famous Chinese novel which she liked a lot, she slept only six hours every day in six years because she spent lots of time reading materials about Chinese politics, history and society during that period of time.
After four years’ Chinese study in Peking University, she learnt that the University of Granada would open a department in Asian studies, so she moved to the city in south Spain in 1994 and has stayed there ever since.
She started the Chinese classical literature study in Spain, and therefore made the University of Granada a major place of sinology(汉学) in the country.
Given her excellent work in translating Chinese classic literature, Relinque was granted(授予) a special prize by the Chinese government in 2017.
“Spain should pay more attention to China, and on the other hand, I ask my students to study Chinese history because the country’s today and future lie in history,” said Relinque.

A. A reporter. B. A writer.
C. A teacher. D. A historian.
2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

Crocodiles (鳄鱼) swallow (吞) stones. Crocodiles always swallow their food instead of eating it like other animals. They swallow stones which break the food into very small pieces in their stomachs. These stones may stay in their stomachs all their lives.
