In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. My boys were from three months to seven years, and their sister was two.
I cleaned up the kids until they looked brand new, and then put on my best homemade dress. I put them into the old car and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck.
The last place we went to was now called the Big Wheel, and an old lady named Granny owned the place. Finally she told me she needed someone to work from 11 at night to seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour, and I could start that night. I returned and left the children at home.
Then I left to start my new job at the Big Wheel. As the weeks went by, the tires(轮胎)on the old car began to leak(漏气). I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home.
One cold fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires! There was no note, just those beautiful brand new tires.
Christmas was coming, and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. So, I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old toys. Then I hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches(补丁)on top of patches on the boys’ pants, and soon they would be too far gone to repair.

Every day, unemployed men gather in Jackson Heights, Queens. Many of them are homeless. All of them are hungry. At around 9:30 each night, Munoz's truck arrives, filled with hot food, coffee and hot chocolate. For more than four years, Munoz and his family have been feeding those in need seven nights a week, 365 days a year. Munoz was born in Colombia and his father died in an accident when he was young. When his mother found it difficult to support Munoz and his sister, she made her way to New York, finding work in Brooklyn as a nurse. As immigrants(移民), they often suffered starvation. Later Munoz found a job as a bus driver. “When I see these guys on the street, it's like seeing me 20 years ago when I came to this country,” Munoz recalls.
Munoz began his meal program-An Angel in Queens-in the summer of 2004.Within a few months, Munoz and his mother were preparing 20 home-cooked meals daily. Numbers gradually increased over the years to 35 per night, then 60.In recent months, that number has jumped to as many as 140 meals a night. Munoz gets up around 5:00 a.m.to drive his bus route, and he calls home on his breaks to see how the cooking is going. “If I don't go, I'm going to feel bad,” he says. “I know they're going to be waiting for me.”
Munoz estimates(估计)that food and gas cost approximately$400 to 450 a week; he and his family are funding the operation through their savings and his weekly$700 paycheck. Asked why he spends so much time to help people he doesn't know, he answers, “I have a stable job, my mom, my family, a house...everything I want, I have. And these guys don't”. So I just think, 'OK,I have the food. At least for today they're going to have a meal to eat.’”

A new study has found evidence of aggressive(富于攻击性的)behaviors in children who drink four or more servings of soft drinks every day. Information for the study came from the mothers of 3, 000 5-year-olds.
Researchers asked the women to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a two-month period. The women were also asked to complete a checklist of their children’s behaviors.
The researchers found that 43 percent of the boys and girls drank at least one daily serving of soda, 4 percent of the youngsters had four or more servings of soda to drink every day.
Shakira Suglia is with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. She worked on the study with researchers from the University of Vermont and Harvard University School of Public Health. She says they found that children who drank the most soda were more than two times as likely as those who drank no soda to show signs of aggression.
“For the children who consumed four or more servings of soft drinks per day, we see an association between aggressive behaviors, attention problems and withdrawn behaviors. ”
The aggressive behaviors included destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.
Doctor Suglia says it’s not clear why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior problems.
“We can’t prove that this is a direct cause and effect relationship, having said that, there are a lot of ingredients in soda, a lot of ingredients that have not been examined in relation to behaviors. ”
Earlier studies of young adults have found the highest sugar levels in those who carry weapons and show signs of negative social behaviors.
1.What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. The aim of the research.
B. The members of the research.
C. The method of the research.
D. The organizer of the research.
2.Which of the following is TRUE about the study?
A. Researchers had face-to-face talks with some children.
B. Mothers played an important part in the study.
C. Half of the children drank one daily serving of soda.
D. The result of the study is unknown.
3.What does the underlined word mean?
A. Bought. B. Drank. C. Fought. D. Studied.
4.What can we learn from Doctor Suglia?
A. The relation between aggressive behaviors and soft drinks is not clear.
B. Children who drink a lot of soda must have behavior problems.
C. There are a lot of ingredients examined in relation to behaviors.
D. Children shouldn’t drink soda.

高一英语完形填空中等难度题查看答案及解析
A foreign degree was once believed to be a sure path to a well-paid job. However, more and more graduates have found that this is not necessarily true.
The number of Chinese studying abroad grew at a slower rate in 2018 compared with 2017, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, 662,100 Chinese went abroad to study, up 8.83 percent from a year earlier, while the growth rate was 11.7 percent in 2017.
A major reason for the slower growth is that more and more students have realized that overseas study does not necessarily guarantee a well-paid job, reported China Daily.
According to a 2018 report by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), about a third of graduate returnees to China earn less than 6,000 yuan a month, while 25 percent make between 6,000 and 8,000 yuan a month.
For example, Lucy Liu, a woman from Beijing, was disappointed after being interviewed by a famous film studio in Beijing. She had just finished her postgraduate (研究生) studies in documentary production at New York University in the United States.
“The pay would be 150,000 yuan for one documentary, and at best I could finish one documentary a year,” Liu told South China Morning Post.
“After spending so much on my studies, I couldn’t accept that pay,” said Liu. She spent about 1 million yuan in tuition and living expenses while studying abroad.
Worse still, it takes over four months for over 50 percent of returned students to land a job, and only 20 percent get job offers before graduation, according to Qi Bin, from Haiwei Career Services, a company that specializes in employment for returnees.
Two major reasons are that they often miss the main job-seeking season while they’re abroad and they lack internship experience, Qi told China Daily.
However, this doesn’t mean studying overseas is useless.
On the contrary, it may provide students with good language and communication skills, an independent character and a global mindset, which are important for their career development, according to Qi.
“Studying overseas cannot guarantee everything, but foreign-educated students have great potential, and at some point their break will come,” Li Qing, a researcher from CCG, told the South China Morning Post.
1.What does the report by the Ministry of Education tell us?
A.Fewer students returned to China after studying overseas in 2018.
B.The growth of Chinese students studying abroad slowed in 2018.
C.Fewer Chinese students went to foreign universities in 2018.
D.More Chinese students found good jobs after studying abroad in 2018.
2.The example of Lucy Liu proves mainly that ______.
A.an overseas degree doesn’t guarantee a good salary
B.the cost of studying abroad is too great for an ordinary family
C.foreign-educated students earn less than those who studied at home
D.it takes a long time to produce a good documentary
3.What does Qi Bin think of studying abroad?
A.It is a waste of students’ time and money.
B.It gives students better internship chances.
C.It limits the possibility of students’ getting jobs that interest them.
D.It provides students with useful skills for their career development.
4.How does Li Qing feel about the future of foreign-educated students?
A.Worried. B.Unsure. C.Positive. D.Challenged.
