Tape-Measure Murder is a short story by Agatha Christie. In the story, Miss Politt, the dressmaker, finds that Mrs. Spenlow is dead in her house in a small village called St Mary Mead. Everybody, including the police, thinks that Mr. Spenlow is the murderer (凶手) because he is so calm and quiet after discovering his wife’s death. But after the police talk to Miss Marple, she finds out the real murderer.
The best part of the story is when Miss Marple explains how she solves the mystery (疑案) by noticing a tiny pin (别针) on a policeman’s uniform. Her explanation is very clear and clever. Miss Marple is my favorite character in the story. I think she is very special because she is just an old lady but she is even smarter than the policemen. I never thought that an old lady could be the main character of a detective story!
Can you guess who the murderer is? Read the book to find out! You will enjoy the story very much because the ending is so surprising.

English is the first language of several countries. However, it has many differences. British, American, and South African English are all spoken differently. In many English language courses, the British and American differences are taught. One is not more correct than the other, but there are important differences between the two.
Probably the biggest difference between American and British English is the vocabulary. Different words and expressions are used to talk about the same thing. For example, in the United States, people throw their garbage into the trash can. In England, people throw their rubbish into the dustbin. In Britain, people take a lift to the fifth floor. In America, people take an elevator.
American and British grammar can be also different. For example, speakers of British English will ask “What did you do at the weekend?”, but Americans usually say “on the weekend.” In the United States people usually say “I’ve gotten a new car.”, but in the UK they will say “I’ve just got a new car.”
The pronunciation in American and British English is also different, even when the spelling is the same. The word “tomato”—pronounced “to-mah-to” in British English—is a classic example of this.
Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are three ways English is different in different parts of the world. Learning all these is not easy, so English learners should just know that they are always there.

Every year hundreds of films are produced, yet how many are forgotten after six months? Movies come and go, as throwaway as popcorn bags left on the floor of a cinema. But of those few films that people do remember, there is one that is truly “evergreen”(常青)
Whether you are young or old, or where you are in the world, the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind never seems to become unpopular. Last year the film celebrated its 75th birthday.
The movie comes from a best-selling book of the same name by US writer Margaret Mitchell. Hollywood was soon interested in turning the novel into a movie.
The story is set in the periods before, during and after the American Civil War (1861-1865). It is about relationships between members of high-class families living in the south of America.

Literature is a word used to describe written as well as spoken material. Generally speaking, it is often used to describe anything from creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama and fiction.
Then why read literature, since it is often imaginary and seems unconnected with real life?
A lot of us read literature for enjoyment and relaxation. It’s always pleasant to read some interesting books in our spare time. In a modern life full of stress, it is our common wish to read some imaginary works and look for relaxation from the stress in life.

In some ways, we explore the human condition and analyze(分析) the way they think and feel the way they feel. Literature helps us think clearly and encourages us to open minds.

The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music and then your girl friend’s beautiful voice comes, “Wake up, darling, please.” A few minutes later, loud music comes from the tape recorder. Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just three days!
The first day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting(刻上) upon my mind the outside evidences of the beauty that is within them. I should also view the small simple things of my home. I want to see the pictures on the walls, the lovely small furniture that changes a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully on the books in dot-raised type which I have read, but they would be more interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining lighthouse, showing me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit.
In the afternoon of that first seeing day, I should take a long walk in the woods and rest my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying to enjoy in a few hours the brilliance(光辉)which is presenting itself to those who can see. On the way home from my woodland trip, my path would lie close to a farm so that I might see the patient horses working in the field and the peaceful men living close to the soil.
When darkness had fallen, I should experience the double joy of being able to see, thanks to the man-made light which man has created to enlarge the power of his sight when Nature brings darkness
In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the memories of the day!
