A few years after I was born, a stranger appeared in our small town. Dad liked this attractive newcomer very much and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.
As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special position. Mom taught me how to tell good from bad, and Dad taught me to follow orders. But the stranger was our storyteller. He would keep us listening for hours with adventures, mysterious stories and comedies. If I wanted to know something about history or science, he always knew the answers. He knew about the past, understood the present and even seemed to be able to know what would happen in the future! With his help, my family even watched a national ball game for the first time.
Both my brothers and I enjoyed sitting around the stranger. He made us laugh; he made us cry, and he never stopped talking. Dad didn’t seem to mind. However , Mom thought he was too talkative. Sometimes she would go to the kitchen for peace and quietness.
My dad didn’t allow drinking, but the stranger encouraged us to try it. He also made us feel that smoking looked cool and manly. He talked freely (much too freely!).
Fifty years has passed since the stranger moved in and now I am fifty-four. I now know that my early childhood was strongly influenced by the stranger. Many times, he challenged the values of my parents, yet nobody stopped him or asked him to leave. What is his name? We just call him—”TV”. He has a younger sister now. We call her “computer”.
1.Who was the storyteller in the family?
A. Mom. B. Dad. C. TV. D. Brother
2.Why would Mom go to the kitchen while the rest of us were with the stranger?
A. Because the programs were not interesting.
B. Because she wanted to avoid the noise.
C. Because she didn’t like to be with her family.
D. Because she needed to cook for her family.
3.From the passage, we know ____.
A. the stranger told the writer not to smoke
B. the stranger always argued with the writer’s parents
C. the writer’s mother thought that the stranger was cool
D. the writer’s father brought the stranger to his family
4.The name of the stranger’s sister is “____” according to the passage..
A. watch B. telephone C. TV D. computer
5.The best title for the passage may be ____.

My dad was a plumber(水管工) for the public works department in our town, so from time to time he came into my school. Can you imagine sitting in class and seeing your dad walk past the door of your classroom and wave his hand at you? In junior high?
One girl in our class always made fun of me because my dad was a plumber and hers was a lawyer(律师), and she would say things like, “Ew, that’s gross(粗俗的)!” I must admit I was sometimes embarrassed by what my dad did, especially in my early teens, when the only thing I really cared about was what the other girls thought.
The girl lived a few streets away from us, and one winter day---the day her elder sister was getting married---the toilet in their main upstairs bathroom broke and there was water everywhere. Her father, the lawyer called every plumber in the Yellow Page, but nobody would come and because we were having a major snowstorm. Her daughter told him that my father was a plumber, and he called, and my dad went right over---and took me with him.(Maybe he was hoping that the lawyer’s daughter would be nicer to me.) My father fixed the toilet, help them clean up everything, and didn’t take much time for his trouble. But as we were leaving, he told the girl, “If I ever need a lawyer, I’ll be happy to call your dad.”
As we walked to our car, he said to me, “Do you believe he didn’t know where the main shut-off valve(阀) was? What a dumb ass!”
From that point on, her dad was known in school as Lawyer Dumb Ass.
When my husband and I bought our house, the first thing my dad showed him was the main shut-off valve.
I have always been proud to say that I’m a plumber’s daughter.
