Lockheed Martin, American space system company (空间系统公司) has found a really cool way to inspire the young minds of today to the research fields in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
It may look like a normal yellow bus, but all the magic happens once you get inside. Meet the “Mars (火星) Experience Bus,” part of Lockheed Martin’s new “Generation Beyond” national education program to get the kids joining in studying what goes on outside of our home planet. The bus offers a virtual reality (VR, 虚拟现实) experience making the teenagers feel like they are driving on Mars.
The VR experience was developed by taking advantage of software (软件) created for today’s best video games, so you can imagine the picture shown is top level. The kids do seem really excited to see the bus take a virtual trip on the red planet and search unknown places. It’s certainly a great way of learning about the universe by virtual reality working on a common bus.
The Lockheed Martin’s bus will start a tour in the United States to allow kids from different parts of the country to take a ride in it. The Generation Beyond project also includes an iPhone app for iOS providing real-time information about weather reports for Mars, and there’s also a free deep space course for middle school teachers and students.
1.“A really cool way” in the first paragraph refers to ________.
A . A science subject B. Mars Experience Bus C. Video game software
2.“Generation Beyond” is a/an ________.
A. school bus B. educational project C. vocation trip
3. The VR experience was developed from ________.

The American company Otherlab has built a new drone (无人机) which the company calls “Sky Machine”.
Compared with other unmanned aircraft (无人机), the drone is very different. It is made almost completely out of cardboard. It can be packed with materials and sealed (密封) up with tape.
The drone looks like a big paper airplane that we used to make as kids. But this light flyer is not a toy, it was designed to be dropped from airplanes. Hundreds of drones could be launched at once and then they are guided to where they are supposed to go to complete deliveries (递送) to different places over an area covering hundreds of kilometers.
The company says it can travel about 150 kilometers at speeds up to 88 kilometers an hour. Now it can carry materials weighing up to one kilogram, but future ones are expected to carry heavier loads (负荷).
One of the drone’s main advantages is that it does not have a heavy motor or large battery. This provides more room for materials and makes the drone cost less to build and work.
The technology that guides the drone can make it land within 10 meters of its target, according to Otherlab. And once the drone completes its delivery, ▲ and the cardboard material will decompose (分解) within a few months.
Otherlab says the drones can also be reused. Otherlab has received money from the U.S. Department of Defense to carry out research on the drones. The U.S. military has a need for delivery drones. But the delivery drones they usually use can be stolen and studied by others if found after use. Before they can truly disappear, the electronic materials inside the drones must also somehow disappear. Otherlab’s Sky Machine is an attempt to fill that need. Researchers are still working on ways to get the technology itself to selfdestruct (自毁).
1.What makes the new drone very different from other unmanned airplanes?
A. It will drop things while flying.
B. It can be played as a toy.
C. Its main material is cardboard.
D. It was made by Otherlab.
2.Having no heavy motor or large battery can _______.
A. make the drone fly faster
B. make it difficult for the drone to land
C. make the drone cost more to build
D. provide more space for carrying materials
3.Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A. it can be thrown away
B. it will go to the next place
C. it can fly back where it lands
D. it will land within 10 meters of its target
4.From the last paragraph, we can learn that _______.
A. the U.S. military is using Otherlab’s Sky Machines
B. the delivery drones the U.S. military uses are always stolen
C. the U.S. Department of Defense supports Otherlab’s research
D. the electronic materials inside a military drone can disappear easily

Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems (报警系统) to protect their property (财产). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will patrol (巡逻) factories, warehouses (仓库), and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to find people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens (警笛) to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be barred from the area it patrols.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot will be hard to be stolen anyway. It will weigh about 200 pounds.
US companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper.
1.Why are robots of this kind called mobile robots?
A. Because they are able to climb stairs.
B. Because they are able to send an alarm.
C. Because they can open doors.
D. Because they can move around slowly on wheels.
2.Where will a robot get directions for moving around a building?
A. From a human guard. B. From a built-in computer.
C. From another robot. D. From radio signals.
3.The underlined word “barred” means “ ”.
A. protected B. allowed C. marked D. prevented
4.According to the passage, a mobile robot will not be able to .
A. sense whether something has been moved
B. sense a cat crossing the room
C. move along rough ground
D. find people through walls
5.This passage mainly describes how robots will .
A. protect the museum B. set off a siren
C. judge the size of a person D. patrol buildings

A new rubbish sorting system (垃圾分类系统) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but al so put QR codes (二维码) on it.
“When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money,” one of the local people told reporters. “It’s really creative and encouraging.”
China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried (填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills (填埋场) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.
What’s more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits (经济利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successfully sorting systems.
Japan has a strict and detailed system. when people throw away a water bottle, the cap, the wrapper (包装纸) and the bottle itself have to go into three different bins.
In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins—the red lid (盖子) bin for “general waste” like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for “recycling” like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for “green waste” such as grass and leaves. On the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.
