Why do people work? Of course, you may have asked yourself the same question as why you have to work. “Self-interest” in its broadest sense, including the interests of family and friends, is a basic motivation(动力)for work in all societies. But self-interest includes more than providing for living or getting wealth that people usually think. For example, a sense of duty, a feeling of competing, and a pleasure in working are other reasons for working. Studies show that most of Americans would continue to work even if they have had enough money to live comfortably.
When people work, they gain a contributing place in society. The fact that what they receive pay for their work means that what they do is needed by other people and what they are doing is necessary to society. Work can also place people in the larger class of society and provide all kinds of identities (身份) for them. In the United States, it is a cruel public fact that to do nothing is to be nothing and to do little is to be little. Work is commonly seen as the measure of an individual (个人).
Some scientists have shown some of the ways that work has effect on our lives. Generally, people who always do their favorite work are more open to new ideas and easier to get along with others, and as parents they pass these characteristics on to their children. Our work then is an important social thing that makes us know who and what we are.

Stamp collecting is easy when you do it as a hobby. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. Sometimes stamps can be got from many sources (来源) for free.
Getting Started
If you have no stamps at all,you might want to buy a packet of 500 or 1,000 different worldwide stamps from a hobby shop or stamp dealer to get started. One good choice is eBay. Try entering phrases like “worldwide stamps” in the search box. However, even if you want to specialize in collecting stamps,my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning. Start off collecting stamps from many sources for free until you have collected enough stamps and had enough experience.
Sorting Stamps
Assume(假设) you have some stamps and they are on paper. Before you take them off the paper, you should sort the stamps, for example,by country. This is because dealing with stamps is much easier when they are on paper. When you take them off the paper, they become easy to bend, crease, and tear easily.
Trimming(修剪)Stamps
Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it,even if it appears to be loose enough to do so. First, trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors making sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. I suggest that you leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp when you trim the paper before you are good at doing it.
1.This passage is written for people who________.
A. have no money to collect stamps
B. want to sell their stamps
C. want to collect stamps
D. don’t know how to sort stamps
2.According to the writer,at the very beginning,stampcollecting beginners shouldn’t________.
A. collect common stamps
B. borrow some stamps from their friends
C. act as an inexperienced collector
D. spend a lot of money in buying stamps
3.What does the writer suggest NOT do when trimming stamps?
A. Pull at them to take them off the paper backing when they look loose.
B. Trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors.
C. Leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp.
D. Make sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps.
