To the Editor: Why do our children have 11 weeks of summer vacation? Many years ago, 85 percent of Americans worked on farms. Children needed summer vacation because they helped with the farm work. Today only 3 percent of Americans work on farms. But our children still have long summer vacations. American students lose one or two months of learning during their summer vacations. Away from school for so many weeks students forget what they learned. Experts say that students lose maths skills and reading skills. At the beginning of school in September, teachers have to review last year’s studies for the first four to six weeks of school. Summer vacations are not great opportunities for learning. Most parents work outside of the home. They can’t be with their kids during the long summer months. Some families can pay for summer camps, but many can’t. Most children stay home and watch TV. They are bored. Most children do not learn new skills during the summer. James, Teacher |
Letter B
To the Editor: I am against a longer school year. I believe people learn everywhere, not just in school. I believe children gain experience in the world. Summer vacation is a great opportunity. Kids can discover the world outside of school. They can learn to do things they can’t learn in a classroom. They can learn to swim and ride bikes. They can travel or go to summer camps. They can take time to do things like cooking and art. Some can get summer jobs. They can get work experience or help people in the community. They can spend time with people of other ages. Basically, they can get more experience in the world. Long summer vacations give families time together. During the school year, everyone is busy. During summer vacations, we take time to do things together. Vacations are good for families. Linda, Parent |

16 September 2012
Dear Mr. Mahita,
I was given your name and the address of your hotel by two friends of ours who stayed at the Sayuri last June. They were Mr. James Collins and Mr. Arthur Drake. You would perhaps remember James Collins, as he speaks fluent Japanese.
Both Mr. Collins and Mr. Drake spoke very highly of your hotel and all the help they received from your staff when they visited Kyoto.
Following their recommendations, I would like to make a reservation at your hotel for myself and my friend, Mr. Peter Sullivan. We would like two single rooms as close to each other as possible, next-door would be ideal for us. We would like to be in Japan for New Year’s Day and to be there for Adult’s Day, which we have been told is on the second Monday in January. So we would like our reservations to be from 31 December 2012 to 20 January 2013. I have also been told that you can arrange an English-speaking guide, certainly for the Machiya, the town houses of Kyoto, but also for other aspects of life in Kyoto. Can you also advise me on car hire in Japan, please?
I look forward to hearing from you with confirmation of the booking and advice on prices and payment – how much do you want in advance as a deposit (押金)?
I should perhaps mention that unlike our friend Mr. Collins, neither myself nor Mr. Sullivan speaks a single word of Japanese (unfortunately!). But I am told that you speak excellent English.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely
Ted Latham

April 13th, 1539
Outside Mexico City
Dear Mariana,
Today we arrived safe. It was a long and dangerous trip over the ocean. The winter storms were strong. We were always a little sick from high waves.
The journey from the shore to Mexico City is also long and dangerous. There are robbers in the countryside. We will travel together with the other ship passengers, thinking we will be safer as a group. Tomorrow we will travel into the city to find our uncle.
Father says it will take a year for this letter to reach you. The trip from New Spain to Spain is very long.
Your loving brother,
Tomas
April 20th, 1539
Mexico City
Dear Mariana,
Father and I finally arrived at Mexico City. Here, old buildings are being pulled down; new ones are being built. Just around the corner from Uncle’s city house, Aztec workers are pulling down a small, beautiful pyramid. Father says it is one of the last Aztec temples.
In the center of the city, I met an Aztec boy named Carlos. He speaks a little Spanish. Carlos learns Spanish at his new school. He told me that the Spanish set up new schools for the Aztecs. There he got his new name, Carlos. He says he likes his new school but misses his old city. I wonder what this city used to be like before Cortes came.
Tomorrow we will go to Uncle’s farmland. He and father are talking about the Aztec workers that father will oversee.
Your brother,
Tomas
