Success starts within our mind. Now, we will discuss four steps to change our lives and create a new future.
■ 1. Think big. Get rid of negative(负面的)beliefs.
Your beliefs have developed from what happened to you in the past. You should realize that the past is not equal to the future, unless you really live there. The first thing you need to do is to drive all the negative beliefs away from your mind. Those beliefs are not useful for creating a new future. Think that everything is possible if you put enough effort in it. When you change your beliefs into positive ones, you will feel more powerful. You will then be able to move on to the next level.
■ 2. Write your plan to achieve your goals.
Your great goals should be divided into smaller goals. Make a timetable for each goal so that you can measure your progress. Write a detailed plan to achieve these goals.
■ 3.Take action according to your plan.
Nothing bears fruit without action. Every successful person has to work hard towards his or her goals. There is no exception(例外). Be prepared to work according to your plan. Be willing to invest (投资) in the resources necessary for your progress. Do not give up.
■ 4. Review what you have done and know how good you are.
While you are in the process of your work, take some time to review how well you have done. Review your progress based on your plan and see if you need to change anything. You can change your methods but you should not change your goals.
1. Why should we get rid of our negative beliefs?
A.They come from our past experiences. B.The past and the future are different. C.They will stop us from starting a new future. D.We should learn some useful things.
2. According to the second step, to achieve your big goals, you should _________.
A.change your methods B.make full use of every minute C.divide them into smaller ones and achieve them one by one to time D.measure your progress from time
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.During your work, be prepared to change everything. B.If you feel your goal difficult, you’d better give it up. C.Considering changing the ways you achieve goals is useful. D.Reviewing is more important than setting goals.

“Mind over matter” is an English saying meaning that we can control our bodies with our minds. Now scientists are finding increasing evidence that our mind can have a great effect on our physical health. Since our mind influences how we feel, it’s not true to say if someone is ill just because he feels ill.
The influence of the mind on how well we feel is the basis of what is known as the placebo effect. A placebo (which is Latin for “I shall please”) is a harmless, inactive substance. Patients are sometimes given placebo pills and begin to feel better because they believe that they have been given real drugs and expect to respond to them. The placebo effect is very strong: research on pain suggests that up to 30% of the effect of most painkillers is a placebo effect.
So if it is so powerful, why don’t doctors use it today?
According to Dr Persaud, they really do. “All these things like seeing a doctor, going to a hospital, and being scanned(扫描) have a very strong placebo effect,” he says.

Before I started school, people felt that I was not going to be successful. At the age of four I started speech lessons because basically I could not speak well enough for anyone to understand me. The story goes downhill from here.
The first grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but also felt nervous about the fact that I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn’t do it. The second grade was not much better. I still struggled with the inability to read. It was in the third grade that the school district built a new school close to my home. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could move to the new one. However, things were still not much better as far as my schooling was concerned and did not get better for the next two years.
It was in the fifth grade. Mrs. Wakefield was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel defeated. On the contrary, she did her best to let me know that I could be whatever I wanted to be. And that is just what I did.
For the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wakefield’s influence on my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome any difficulty and become someone. I have won numerous awards up to now, such as Teacher of the Year. I owe it all to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be.

We know almost half the world is urban(都市的) now – but what will our world look like in the year 2100?
It took about a million years for the global human population to come up to 1 billion in 1800. In the next 200 years, it came up to 6 billion, and it will take only about 20 more years to add another billion. By 2100, the United Nations estimates that the global population will attain more than 10 billion.
By the end of 2008, slightly less than 50 percent of the global population lived in cities. If economic development proceeds at today’s pace, over the next century or so it is highly likely that 8 billion people will live in urban centers, up from today’s roughly 3.3 billion. Yes, the world will indeed be able to hold so many people. The major reason is urbanization(城市化). There will be many more new cities in the year 2100, and some of today’s large cities will become super cities, including Beijing, Delhi, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and so on. At the same time, recent advances in agriculture, energy, and water technologies suggest that human creations will keep up with population growth. Rural areas will return to an agrarian (农业的)centre to feed the growing cities. Languages will drop from the current 7,000 across the globe to less than a few hundred. English will be the primary language of the world.
As we compress(压缩) people into the urban center, and as we leave behind the rural areas to feed us – will we really live a happy life at that time? We will have to live together in large buildings in cities and save on energy and services delivery cost. There will be few chances for us to get close to nature. We really need to think about the effect of the things we have done and are doing now!
1. The underlined word “attain” in the second paragraph probably has the same meaning as “________”
A. increase B. gain C. reach D. limit
2. With the development of urbanization, people in 2100 will have to .
A. stay in urban areas and have no chance to get close to nature
B. develop industry rather than agriculture to create job opportunities
C. live a poor and unhappy life because there will be less energy to use.
D. make more creations in agriculture, energy, and water technologies
3. What is the author’s attitude towards urbanization?
A. supportive B. disappointed C. surprised D. worried
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Global urbanization in the year 2100
B. The primary language in the future
C. Reasons for the rapid increase of population
D. The development of agriculture in 2100

Our solar system might be crazier than we once thought. Scientists say that deep within Uranus(天王星) and Neptune(海王星) it rains diamonds.
On Earth. diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. The inside of Uranus and Neptune also has high temperatures and pressures. What's more, the blue planets are largely made up of icy water and gases such as methane(甲烷).
So scientists have long believed that deep inside the two planets, the heat and pressure the methane into hydrogen (氢)and carbon (碳) Then diamond rain would form, falling toward the center of the planets.
But no one could prove that this would really work-until now. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists say they were able to create this kind of "diamond rain" in a lab, reported The Guardian.
Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shockwaves through a kind of plastic. The plastic is made from hydrogen and carbon, much like methane. The shock waves created high pressure and heat, like that inside Uranus and Neptune.
"The experimental time is very short, Dominik Kraus, lead author of the study, told The Guardian. "That we saw this very clear signature of diamonds was actually very, very surprising”.
The diamonds created in the lab were tiny, only a few nanometers (纳米)wide. Scientists believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly sink toward the planets center because of gravity.
1.What factor is needed to form diamonds?
A. Extreme heat and pressure B. Hydrogen and carbon
C. lcy water and gases D. High-powered lasers
2.What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unsuccessful B. Small
C. Real D. Natural
3.How did scientists prove the theory of forming diamond?
A. By giving examples B. By stating argument
C. By explaining statistical data D. By doing experiments
4.What can be referred from the text?
A. There are many high-powered lasers in Neptune and Uranus
B. Deep inside Neptune and Uranus could be full of diamonds
C. The shockwaves inside Neptune and Uranus crate high pressure and heat.
D. Scientists long believe that there are diamonds inside Neptune and Uranus
