Americans love to drive. They have drive-in movie theaters, drive-through restaurants and driving vacations. It’s often called the “Great American Road Trip”: Your whole family gets into a van or recreational vehicle (RV, 旅行房车), and hits the road for a summertime trip across the country.
American cars are always big, but RVs are the biggest. These are houses on wheels. RVs have kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. All across the country you can find RV parks – places to park your RV and spend the night. And, if you can’t find one, you can always make your home in a grocery store parking lot.
As big as RVs are, they still seem very small to a family who has to spend every hour of every day together. With your little brother kicking you in the face all night in your tiny bed under the table, the dog barking and Mom playing her country music on the radio, your family is not at its best.
What’s worse, RVs are always breaking down. So it’s possible to spend a lot of time watching dad under the RV on the side of a dusty road.
But RV travel can be a great time with the family, too. You can see the country in the comfort of your own “home”. You can spend every night in a different, natural and beautiful place, or just stay where you are. You don’t have to pay for hotels or restaurants, only gas. But, best of all, you are free to go wherever you want at any time in your home-away-from-home.
1.RVs have the following EXCEPT____.
A. Bathrooms B. Bedrooms C. Kitchens D. Gardens
2.Why do American people like to travel in RVs?
A. Because RVs can go faster than other cars.
B. Because they can listen to music on the radio.
C. Because RVs never break down on the road.
D. Because it’s like traveling in their own home.
3. If you travel in RVs, you only have to pay for____.
A. Hotels. B. Gas. C. Food. D. Drinks.
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Traveling in RVs is more expensive than living in hotels.
B. RVs are big enough for families traveling together.
C. It is not difficult to find parking places for RVs and spend the night.
D. It is less fun to travel in RVs than to stay in hotels.

Americans love sports--they love to play them, to watch them on television, and to talk about them. But this hobby sometimes has serious results-- at least to the players. For example, when people play tennis, sometimes they hurt their elbows(肘部) and in this way they develop "tennis elbow". Also it is easy to hurt a knee in a football game. These injuries happen while the player is having fun, but they still hurt.
A few months ago Kathleen Simmons, who loves playing volleyball, hurt her knee in a volleyball game. Her doctor told her that she needed a very difficult operation(手术) or she might not be able to play again. She felt very sad and didn't know what to do.
Then Simmons learned about "video operation". Simmons found a hospital that was using this new science and went to see the doctor there. The doctors told her the operation could help.
For this operation, her doctor didn't have to open her knee. Instead he put a very small camera lens(镜头)inside her knee. The lens sent back pictures, which appeared on a television screen. As he worked, he could see the inside of her knee on the TV. With the help of the large pictures on the screen, the doctor knew exactly what to do when he was making the repairs.
Simmons started walking five days after her operation. Now, six months after her operation, Simmons can do everything she did before her injury. She can play volleyball again."

Americans have used colours to create many expressions they use every day.
We say we’re “in the pink” when we are in good health. It is easy to understand how this expression was born. When my face has a nice fresh, pink colour, it is a sign which shows my health is good.
The colour green is natural for trees, it is an unnatural colour for humans. When someone doesn’t feel well, for example, we say he looks green. When someone is angry because he doesn’t have what someone else has, we say he is “green with envy”.
Some people are “green with envy” because someone else has more dollars, or “greenbacks”. Dollars are called “greenback” because that’s the colour of the backside of the money.
Blue is a cool colour. The traditional blue music of American blacks is the opposite of red hot music. It is slow, sad and soulful (深情的). To be blue, of course, is to be sad.
The colour black is often used in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a “black day”. A “black sheep” is the member of a family or group who always seems to be in trouble. If someone meets a “black cat”, something unlucky might happen to him. Not all the “black” expressions have bad meanings. A company “in the red” is losing money. If someone tells you to put someone “in black and white”, they want you to write it down.
1. After reading the passage, we can infer (推测) if someone “looks gray”, he_____.
A. looks well B. may need a doctor C. is healthy D. is “in the pink”
2. I was really _____ when I saw his nice new car.

3. Which word describes the red hot music?
A. Fast. B. Sad. C. Slow. D. Soulful.
4.My brother is _____ of our family, everyone hates him.
A. a black horse B. a black cat C. a black dog D. a black sheep
5. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. A company surely likes to be “in the red ”.
B. All the colour expressions in the passage come from Britain English.
C. Not all the “black” expressions have bad meanings.
D. Dollars are called “greenback” because it has trees on the back side.
