One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. She could not afford a present, so she sat down and cried.
Jim and Della had two possessions(财产) which they were both proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch that was from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della’s beautiful hair. It fell about her, and reached below her knee.
Della put on her old brown jacket and her old brown hat. Then she went out of the door and down the stairs to the street.
She stopped at a store. The sign in front of the store read “Hair Goods”. “Will you buy my hair?” asked Della. “Twenty dollars.” the woman said.

She found it at last. It was a watch chain. The bill was twenty-one dollars. At seven o’clock, the coffee was made and dinner was ready. Jim was never late. Della heard his steps on the stairs.
The door opened and Jim walked in. He stopped inside the door. His eyes were fixed on Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read.
“Jim,” she cried, “don’t look at me that way. I sold my hair to buy you a Christmas present.”Jim drew a box from his pocket and put it on the table.
Della opened it. There lay the set of combs(梳子) that she had always wanted. Now they were hers, but her hair was gone.
She smiled and held out Jim’s present. “I hunted all over town to find it. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.”

While we are still children ,most of us live at home with our parents, more or less peacefully . But as we become teenagers , things change ,and we begin to grow apart from our parents . This means we are almost ready to leave the house where we grew up and make a new home of our own .
All humans must do this ,but they don’t all do it in the same way . If ,for instance ,you belong to a primitive tribe (原始部落) ,then as you grew up ,you’d learn the skills you needed as an adult---how to catch fish ,how to keep the house and look after children . You would be ready to marry in your early teens and you would build a house and live near your family in the village.
This seems a very old way of life , but it is what humans have been used to through hundreds of years. And it is what we are still used to in the 21stcentury ,for man hasn’t changed in the short time since he became civilized(文明的). But could you leave home and look after yourself during the teen years ? Most people would not do very well . Why ? Because although man hasn’t changed very much , the society he lives in has changed greatly ,which means that we have to learn more and more before we are ready to leave our parents’ shelter( 居所 ) and live alone .
However ,sometimes it is very frustrating to live at parents’ home . Parents can be very upset about late nights ,criticizing friends and always saying that we are noisy and dirty . But we still need our emotional (情感的) shelter till we finish our studies , and that is why we usually stay in our parents’ home until we feel grown up enough to deal with living alone .
1.When does the relationship with parents start changing ?
A. When we are children .
B. When we become teenagers .
C. When we are alone .
D. When we get married .
2.For most teenagers of the 21stcentury ,making a new home of their own may be ________.
A. difficult B. unimportant
C. impossible D. quite easy
3.Why must we know more to be able to live alone ?
A. Because we are becoming less talented .
B. Because our society has changed a lot .
C. Because not enough is taught in our schools.
D. Because man has never really been civilized.
4.From the passage ,we know living at parents’ home when we become teenagers _______ .
A. is always pleasant
B. must be very exciting
C. makes us feel lonely
D. may be annoying

On a weekend during Spring Festival, my parents and I were sitting in a restaurant. The drinks and food were good, so when we finished, my father left a tip(小费). As we were about to open the door, the waiter caught up with us. He gave the tip back to us. My dad forgot that here is China, and tipping is not common.
However, in some countries, tipping is the norm. That’s the way it is in the US. It’s said to be good manners to tip your waiter, taxi driver, hairdresser, doorman and so on. And how much you tip depends on the service, which can really put your math skills to the test! But we usually give a tip that is 15-20% of the bill.
So why is there a strong custom of tipping? In the US, waiters have a very low income(收入). They depend on tips to pay their bills. As a US writer once wrote about her experience as a waitress, “It was difficult and I lived and died by my tips."
1.What did the family think of the food at the restaurant?
A.Delicious. B.Cheap. C.Cold.
2.Where were the parents when the waiter stopped them?
A.At the table. B.At the door. C.Outside the restaurant.
3.What does the underlined word “norm” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Idea. B.Custom. C.Bill.
4.What can be the tip for a $100 bill according to the writer?
A.$8. B.$10. C.$18.
5.The last paragraph mainly tells us __________.
A.who need tips for their life
B.how the US writer made her life
C.why tipping is popular in the US

九年级英语单项填空中等难度题查看答案及解析
Life is competitive - some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are “winners" and “losers", and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in-between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.
Being a “good” winner
No one likes a “show off”.
No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team.
No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good.
To be a good winner you need to:
◆Be modest(谦虚的).
◆ Thank those who helped you for their efforts.
◆ Keep trying to improve your skills.
◆Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.
Being an even better loser
Of course it’s disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name-calling and going on about things being “unfair” won’t change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either.
To be an even better loser you need to :
◆ Behave politely, nicely and kindly.
◆ Congratulate the other team.
◆ Keep any negative (消极的) thoughts to yourself - at least until you are away from the game.
It’s Ok to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don’t do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.
1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.We are either losers or winners.
B.We should face winning and losing properly.
C.We can do nothing about winning and losing.
D.We are always competing with others not ourselves.
2.What should a better loser do when losing?
A.Let out his anger to his parents at once.
B.Express his negative feelings in the game.
C.Try harder to improve himself in the next game.
D.Behave badly to his team members or competitors.
3.Which one is not proper if we succeed?
A.Going on improving our skills.
B.Telling our team members to aim higher.
C.Thanking our team members for their efforts.
D.Putting down others to make ourselves look good.
4.Who is probably a bad sport?
A.Tom keeps saying the game is unfair when he loses.
B.Jim encourages his teammates after their team loses.
C.Anna thanks her coach for what he has done though she fails.
D.Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails.
5.What is the passage written for?
A.Telling us what we can learn from losing.
B.Offering advice on what we can do to win.
C.Encouraging us to become a winner instead of a loser.
D.Giving advice on how to deal with winning and losing.
