The Humane Society of Utah,a non-profit organization,is the largest shelter in the state because it takes every animal that can be lawfully accepted. The shelter employed photographer Guinevere Shuster, from New York, who came up with a creative way to find new homes for the dogs. She took lively photos for them.
The 31-year-old created sets of four pictures showing the playful and serious sides of each animal.Guinevere Shuster tried her best to show these dogs the way they'd really look if you allowed them into your life. She said,“I'm always trying to imagine better ways to make the poor animals attractive to the public. The photos show their great personalities and are a much better way than presenting them as the sad dogs waiting to be taken home.I'm lucky because I get to connect the two things I love most, animals and photography.”
Guinevere says she finds it easy to work with dogs. She said,“It's just me and the dog in the office so they can pay their attention to the photo-taking.I use a lot of treats and some funny noises I've learned to get the dogs' attention. A fun method is to throw treats at the dogs-it's useful for getting unusual looks from them.”

I have been receiving so much kindness. It was difficult for an independent girl like me to accept it at first. At times, my financial situation is not the best. But with that comes a great lesson in appreciation, budgeting, and deciding what is and what isn't important.
A few times I've had to put off or even give up things. Because of my scarcity on money, I had to give up a keep-fit exercise, which is something I like to treat myself regularly. When my coach Lisa heard about this, she offered me training at a highly discounted price. At first this made me very uncomfortable. I feared that she would wrongly think that I was going to bargain and of course I wasn't. Instead, I was just being honest about my situation— being short of money. I finally accepted her offer, remembering that I deserve kindness, too.
Another time, I noticed a friend of mine selling his old exercise bike, which was perfect for me, as I was looking to replace my broken one. I told him that I would take it when I had the money, but then life got in the way. When I finally got the time to pick it up, I realized my financial shortcomings again. I asked him if he could hold onto it for one more week, as then I'd have the funds again. He was happy to do this, but instead he insisted on offering me the bike as a gift. Another opportunity presents itself to teach me how to receive with dignity.
I continue to slowly learn how to accept the kindness from others. In fact, the relationship between giving and receiving is closely linked. When you accept the kindness from others with joy, they will feel happy, too.
1.How did the author feel at first when she received kindness from others?
A.Happy. B.Unfair. C.Proud. D.Unacceptable.
2.What does the underlined word "scarcity" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Scare. B.Independence. C.Lack. D.Principle.
3.What was the author afraid of when Lisa did her a favor?
A.Being punished. B.Being misunderstood.
C.Accepting her coach's strict training. D.Giving away the secret of her being short of money.
4.How did the author get the second-hand exercise bike?
A.She got it for free. B.She paid much money for it.
C.She bought it from her coach. D.She borrowed it from her friend.

My grandma was the best grandma a girl could have. She never said a bad word about anyone. She always found good in a person.

Her old coat had seen better days, and she had repaired it quite a few times. When she finally had enough money saved up, off to town we went. Grandma looked so nice in her new coat, and I was proud of the hard work she did to earn it.
That winter, in the small town where she lived, a family with three small girls lost their house in a fire. They needed clothes, food and household items. Grandma decided to cut up her new coat and make three coats for the little girls. I asked her not to do it, but she kissed away my tears. She told me those girls needed coats much more than she did. Grandma made the dolls, coats, and apron on her old sewing machine.
When they were done, we loaded up the small red truck with the coats, an apron for the mother, blankets, food, and three little dolls. When the family saw what was in the truck, the mother started crying and the girls hugged the dolls.

It’s generally agreed that heroes are great and always admired by common people. However, most of us have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero usually put others before and does his/her best to help people in need. A hero has a special story to tell and is thought highly of by people.
But a hero is not just the person with great fame (名声). A hero has powers larger than himself/herself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision (视野) from the mountaintop. He/She has the power to move people. He/She creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colors of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.
1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How to be a hero. B.What a hero is like.
C.The fame of a hero. D.The lifestyle of a hero.
2.What is a sure test for people who want to be heroes?
A.What or whom they serve. B.Money they make in all.
C.Experience they get for life. D.How or when to serve others.
3.Why did Americans take different buses before Martin Luther King, Jr.?
A.Because they liked different buses.
B.Because of the rules of bus companies.
C.Because of the different colors of their skin.
D.Because they made different amount of money.
4.What can we learn from the text?
A.We don’t need heroes any more.
B.People living just for fame can be heroes.
C.Heroes make the society develop slowly.
D.Heroes are able to create new possibilities.

As a child, Emily Blunt had a stutter(结巴) that made it difficult for her to even say her own name. “I started noticing it at 6 or 7,” the London-born actress says. “My grandfather, my uncle and my cousin all stutter. It feels like you’ve got this pretender living in your body.” After a teacher noticed her stutter disappeared whenever she would start to play energetically, he suggested she try performing for the school play. She found that the more she lost herself in characters, the less uncomfortably nervous she felt and the less she would stutter.

I want to support Malala until the day I die.”
