Understanding Graphics(图表)
When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? Do they help with our reading and understanding?
Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers. Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to get the readers'attention and give them some particular(特别的)information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. And graphics put the information in a particular order so that it's easy to understand when we take a quick look.
It is not always true that a picture is worth a thousand words. But many things are easier to show than to tell and they may also be easier to understand. Graphics are just the right things that give a great deal of information but it doesn’t take much time to read and understand.
The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. Sometimes, numbers and percentages(百分比) are also given to go with the words to explain things.
Now look at the graphic on the right. It is how a researcher used a graphic to show the number of hours spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can you understand it?
1.Which of the following is mentioned as a graphic?
A. A letter.
B. A poem.
C. A map.

A. less space is taken on a page
B. a picture is worth a thousand words
C. a lot of time can be saved for writers
D. many things are easier to show than to tell
3.When we read a graphic, we should ______.
A. find out if there are any tables in it
B. put the information in the right order
C. count how many words there are in it
D. look at the picture and the words together
4.The graphic given in the passage tells us that ________.

When we think about writing poems or understanding poetry, we often think that it's hard to do so. But nothing could be further from the truth. If__you__think__about__it, __you__will__find_you__have_been_listening_to_poems_for_most_of_your_life.
Are you a fan of the latest pop group? Do you like to listen to music? Did your mother ever sing a song to you as she tried to get you to sleep? You see, songs are just poems set to music. They have both the wonderful words of poetry and the sweet sound of music to go along with.
Writing poems is not really all that hard. Through writing poems, you learn how to use a language well. You have to use your imagination. You have to choose the best words to describe exactly what you feel or what you see. You might be trying to describe a beautiful sunset. You think that the words “melting in the distance” or “dropping quietly against the sea” would be a good way to describe it. You have to decide either the first phrase or the second phrase would be better. Would you like to write a poem? Go ahead. It's really not that difficult.

When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often: It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.
People who are nearsighted(近视的) can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.
People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book if they don't hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
When night falls, colors become fainter(更模糊) to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you. It seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they cannot see it anymore, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive (敏感的) in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark,
