When you watch your favorite movies, you might not think about science. Of course, there’s a lot of science behind movies like Interstellar or The Martian but not movies like Frozen or The Avengers, right? Think again.
Animated(动画) movies use a lot of science and math to make things look as real as possible. For example, snow was used in many parts of the movie Frozen, but making the snow look real was a challenge. The snow needed to act differently in different situations, like if it was melting(融化) or blowing in the wind.
Mathematicians(数学家)had to create a computer program to make the snow look more natural. Joseph Teran, a mathematician at the University of California, US, faced this challenge with Frozen, according to the Society for Science and the Public.
He and his team used math equations(等式) to treat snow like many different pieces instead of one large thing, as movies had done in the past. They worked for months to make a computer program do this.
Science is important for superhero movies too. Superheroes are supposed to have special powers that can’t always be explained. But moviemakers still want to make their actions realistic(现实的).
For example, Raychelle Burks, a chemistry professor from the American Chemical Society, told the Daily Mail that some of the science behind The Avengers could be real. Iron Man’s suit is possible because it can be made of a light but strong material. In the movie , Tony Stark also makes new elements by making atoms collide(使原子对撞),much like scientists do in real life.
So next time you see a movie, don’t forget to think about the science behind it.
1.A lot of science and math are used in animated movies to _______.
A. make them like Interstellar and The Martian
B. make the audience think about science
C. make things as realistic as possible
D. make snow smelt or blow in the wind
2.The example of The Avengers in Paragraph 6 is used to show_______.
A. how superheroes have super powers
B. how science makes action realistic
C. Iron Man’s suit is made of light materials
D. how Tony Stark makes new elements
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Every movie should be made to look as realistic as possible.
B. Science and math play important roles in movie making.
C. Animated movies use less science than other movies.
D. Scientists can make things in movies become real.

When you hear about trees cut for paper, you might think of your favorite trees in the backyard, nearby parks or wild forests being cut to pieces.
the good news is that production and use of paper will not cause forests to disappear. Most trees used for paper come from timberlands(林地). People plant trees here for use. It usually takes 10 to 20 years for trees to grow big enough to be cut down. During that time, trees provide a home for animals and produce oxygen(氧气) for the earth. And after people cut down the big trees, they plant small ones again.
Often, a tree is not cut down for making paper at all. People use the big part for buildings. Paper is then made from the left small part.
We also recycle paper—People collect used paper and turn it into new products, likes boxes, newsprint and writing paper, in the factory. So it’s important for us to recycle paper and reduce(减少) the amount(数量) of it in landfills(垃圾处理场).

Movies for the Blind?
When you think of the cinema, the phrase "watching a movie" probably comes to mind, and, in fact, moviemakers work very hard to make their films interesting visually. But movies also contain stories, dialogues, music and sound effects --- things that people don't need to see in order to enjoy.
Movie reviewer Marty Klein has created a website to help visually impaired (受损的) people choose movies that they can follow without the help of an assistant to explain what is happening on the screen. Klein gives movies a rating from 1 to 10 based on several factors. A movie receives a high rating if there are only a few main characters whose voices are easy to recognize. Klein also likes an interesting story without too many changes in time and place. A large amount of dialogue between the characters is better than long silences or noisy action scenes.
Of course, visually impaired people can enjoy many films with the help from a friend who doesn’t mind explaining the parts of a movie that can only be seen. But that means that someone is talking during the movie, which could annoy some audience members. It also means that these people cannot go to the movies independently. To solve these problems, some movie theaters have begun to offer recorded audio descriptions of the movements, scenery, and special effects that other audience members can see on the screen. Visually impaired moviegoers receive a wireless headset to wear during the movie. This allows them to listen to the narration (叙述) while still hearing a movie's music and other sounds that surround them in the theater.
Another blind movie reviewer, Jay Forry, writes movie reviews that are published on his website. He also writes for newspapers and is a guest on radio shows. Forry gives movies one of five ratings, including, "So good, blind people will like it" and "I'm glad I couldn't see it." Forry became a writer after going blind at the age of 20 and he decided to go to college. His first articles appeared in the college newspaper, and Forry's writing skills and sense of humor are what keep people reading his reviews or listening to them on the radio. After "watching" The Sixth Sense, Forry commented that he thought the movie was excellent, but that he envied the boy who was the main character: "He had six senses, and I only have four."
1.Which movie might receive a good rating from Marty Klein?
A. A action film with many fight scenes.
B. A science fiction movie about time travel into the past and the future
C. A romantic comedy with four main characters and lots of conversations.
D. An adventure with many explosions and special effects.
2.According to the article, how are some movie theaters dealing with the problem of blind people going to movies?
A. They are asking the assistants not to annoy the other audience members.
B. They are providing headsets so blind people can hear a recorded narration.
C. They are providing trained employees to describe the movie to blind people.
D. They are asking blind people to enjoy the music and the other sounds in the theater.
3.What is the main idea of the article?
A. More and more blind people enjoy going to movies.
B. Marty Klein and Jay Forry write movie reviews for blind people.
C. Moviemakers are trying to make films more interesting for the blind.
D. Movie reviews and new technologies make it easier for the blind to enjoy the movies.

Sort trash, save Earth
You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting (垃圾分类) policy. People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins (垃圾箱). Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai
Recyclable garbage includes paper, books, boxes, newspapers, and glass bottles.
Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries (电池), nail polish (指甲油), and other things with harmful chemicals.
Wet garbage usually comes from the kitchen, such as food, vegetables, flowers, leaves and eggshells.
Dry garbage is anything you cannot put into the other three bins. It includes pens, toilet paper, tape, hair, and towels (毛巾).
Why is garbage sorting a big problem? It’s because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our soil, air and water. Actually we can make use of some garbage again. And first, we need to sort our garbage.
For example, if you put an old battery into the “harmful waste” bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Can factories sort garbage for us? Yes, they can. But it takes many workers to do this and costs lots of money. If we all sort our own garbage, things will become much easier.
