Once when I was six years old I saw an amazing picture in a book called True Stories from Nature about the forest. It was a picture of a snake in the act of swallowing an animal. In the book it said: "Snakes swallow the whole animal without chewing(嚼)it. After that they are not able to move and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion(消化)."
I thought deeply then over the adventures of the forest. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. I showed my work to the grown-ups and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: "Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a snake digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing. I drew the inside of the snake so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. That's my Drawing Number Two.
The grown-ups' answer this time was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of snakes whether from the inside or the outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, maths and grammar. That is why at the age of six I gave up what might have been a great painter. I had been discouraged by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand simple things by themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
So then I chose another profession(职业)and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very good for me. I can tell China from Arizona easily. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In my life I have had lots of chances to meet with a great many people. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them. Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried showing him my Drawing Number One which 1have always kept. I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But whoever it was, he or she would always say: That is a hat. Then I would never talk to that person about snakes or forests or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about golf and politics and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a wise man. For him I am a normal man.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ______
A. The writer wants to draw a hat in Drawing Number One.
B. The writer sees an elephant eaten by a snake in the forest.
C. Drawing Number Two shows the inside of the big snake.
D. The two drawings of the writer make people very scared.
2.Why do people tell the writer to study same subjects instead of drawing in Paragraph 4? ______
A. Because those subjects are more useful and helpful.
B. Because those subjects are only about simple things.
C. Because his drawings are too difficult to understand.
D. Because his drawings are not good for people at all.

A. To show off his good drawing.

When I was five or six years old,I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself,“When I grow up, when I can get rich,I will save kids all over the world.”
At 17,I started my career here in America, and by the age of 18, I started my first charity( 慈善) organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia(白血病), and whose story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to my grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2012, and her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation(CLF). We're all human. And we all just want a chance: a chance at life, a chance in education, a chance at a future, really. And at CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.
People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is, you don't have to be rich to help others. You don't need to be famous. You don't even have to be college educated. But it starts with your neighbor, the person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a decision to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother always used to say. “If you've got a dollar, there's plenty to share.”

A. Watch TV. B. Grow up quickly.
C. Become wealthy. D. Help other children.
2.What directly caused the author to create and develop the CLF?
A. A six-year-old kid's request.
B. Her grandmother's death of cancer.

4.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Do little things to help those around them.
B. Work hard to get a college education.
C. Challenge their friends to offer help.
D. Do charity work whoever you are.

When I was six years old, my mom told me that I could find anyone's number in the phone book. I used to look through the phone book for hours trying to find Michael Jordan's phone number. When I couldn't find it, I just dialed seven numbers. When someone answered, I'd ask, "Is that Michael Jordan?" Obviously, I always had the wrong number.
A year later I started playing basketball at my local recreation center. It was very big. I never thought in my wildest dreams that a basketball court could be inside a building. The recreation center had a special smell in it, sort of like hot rubber. I guessed it was from the shoes hitting the floor so fast and hard. The atmosphere on the court was carefree. Our biggest excitement of the day was when we actually made a shot. We celebrated wins over ice cream at a fast food restaurant.
I got good at it, and my confidence grew. I played it all the time until the sixth grade. As soon as junior high school came, I stopped playing basketball and focused on school. When senior high school started, I tried out for the school team and made it. We worked hard. Every week we did 300 push-ups and 300 sit-ups on our own. Our coach encouraged the sit-ups to keep stomach power, because it gave us so much control when we were playing basketball. If we didn't want to do the sit-ups and push-ups, we could practice dribbling () and shooting more. It's just us, the ball, the court and the net. But don't take my word for it. See for yourself. After all, I'm just one kid playing the game.

A. the author's mother gave him some wrong phone numbers
B. the phone book contained everyone's phone number except Michael Jordan's

D. The author's happy childhood with his teammates.
3.What surprised the author most at the recreation center?
A. That it was very near to his home.
B. That there was a basketball court inside the building.
C. That there was a special smell in it.

4.The author's coach encouraged them to do sit-ups because ____.
A. it is the basic preparation to play basketball
B. it is more useful than dribbling and shooting
C. it is the only way to make people stronger
D. it helps keep stomach power
5.What's the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce some skills in playing basketball.
B. To tell us about his dream of becoming a basketball star.

In 2005, Winston Duncan was traveling with his mother in Southern Africa when he saw an old lady and young boy walking down a road together. He thought of his own grandmother and wondered how he could help the old lady and others in Africa who have to walk a long way.
Duncan, who lived in Washington State was 10 at the time, and his solution was to give them bikes. With his mom, he started Wheels to Africa, an organization that for the past 14 years has taken bicycles donated from residents of the. Washington area and shipped them across the world to people in need.
Most of the 8000 bikes they have collected have gone to countries in Africa, helping cut down hours of walking for students and other postmen. But last week, Duncan, travelled with a handful of volunteers and 400 bikes to a destination much closer to his home yet still in need: Puerto Rico. More than a year after it was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, the island suffers from transportation problems.
"It was a little chaotic (混乱的) — as soon as they got their bikes, they were just having fun riding around the parking lot," said Austin Higgins, a New Jersey resident who recently joined Wheels to Africa as its photographer and videographer. "Some people who received bicycles were almost speechless, and some of them cried, because it was something they had requested for Christmas from Santa Claus," he said.
The donated bikes included some high-end racing models, which went to teenagers interested in pursuing serious cycling.
Duncan recently graduated from Bard College and is in Arlington working at a political consulting firm. He now encourages kids in the Washington area to get involved with the organization, and some have joined him on trips to Africa and on this trip to Puerto Rico.

On the day before bass (巴斯鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching other fish with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure (鱼饵) and put it into the lake. Suddenly the boy felt something very big pulling on the lure. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm — two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats could be seen in the moon-
light. He looked again at his father.
