From 8:30pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 26th, 2011, a great number of people around the world turned off the lights for Earth Hour. It is a bit like an environmental New Year, providing a chance to help care for our earth and make people around the world learn how important it is to do that. What can do during this hour? We can do lots of run things in the dark, such as planning a candlelight dinner for our family or a group of friends, telling stories and singing songs with the kids and neighbors. What did you do for Earth Hour this year? Let’s share the Earth Hour stories. |
Emma I was on one of the mountains near the city and took photos of my city. It was great to watch the stars and the moon after a busy day so that I could enjoy this relaxing moment. |
Albert I work as a waiter in a restaurant. Our restaurant was still open even for Earth Hour as we got lots of reservations (预定) that night. So we spent the hour working by candlelight. And guess what? Our customers loved that and promised to come for next Earth Hour. |
Brandon I turned off the main power to my house and went for a walk for Earth Hour. It was a little strange to walk in the dark, but it was only for one hour. Just think of what it must have been like before the invention of the light bulb! |
Mary I invited my friends who know and support Earth Hour activities. We actually had a candlelight concert and we talked about the old happy days that we spent together in college. |

Life used to be fun for teenagers. They had lots of interests and they used to spend their spare time on them, like seeing a good film, going for a picnic or listening to music. But for many young people, life is harder now. Jobs are difficult to find. It is hard to find a place to live in. Teachers say students have to work harder than they used to. They are less interested in how to spend their spare time and more interested in passing exams. They know that good exam results may get them better jobs.
But teenagers often feel stressed because they have too much homework to do both at school and at home. They have lots of exams to take. They are too busy studying every day that they don’t have their own time to do what they are interested in. Now more and more teenagers are getting short-sighted(近视)as they study too long every day. So they should think of ways to relax themselves. They should make a plan for study and find time to relax as much as possible.
English Online made a survey on The Ways for Students to Relax. Here are the results. Some think that watching TV is good. Some believe that sometimes playing computer games isn’t a bad way. Others think the best way to relax is to do sports with classmates.

Can you believe it? Let’s improve our public manners. (Mike, Shenzhen) |

Our class had a weekly class meeting this week. We talked about how to deal with lies, hoaxes(骗局) or rumors (谣言) . Here are the stories some students told. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Zhang Wei: Yesterday my friend Jim went to school without his homework. He told the teacher that his dog ate it. It was just an excuse he made to cover the fact that he didn’t do his homework. The teacher knew about that and made Jim stay to finish his homework after school. Sometimes we think we can avoid trouble by making excuses when we do something wrong, but we’re really making the bigger. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Chen Ping: Last week I got a message. It said,” A little girl called Julia has brain cancer. The girl will get three cents from American Online each time this message is forwarded(转发). So please be kind and forward this to everyone you know. If not, you will have bad luck for a year.” In fact, it is just one of the silly chain letters(连锁信)to cheat you and waste your time. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Xu Yan: A big earthquake (地震) hit Ya’an, Sichuan on April 20th. The earthquake was strongly felt by people in Chengdu. A rumor said Chengdu would be hit by a bigger earthquake in the coming days. For the next several days, thousands of people camped outside their houses at night because of fear. Besides, many people rushed to buy food, water, medicine and so on.
