We may know that there are four basic periods for human beings to pass through when you enter and live in another country. This process (变化过程) helps you deal with culture shock (文化冲击).

Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon period”: This is the time when you first arrive in a place where everything about the new cu1ture is strange and exciting. You see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This period can last for quite a long time because you feel very happy.

Unluckily, the second period can be more difficu1t. After you have got used to your new life, you can become very uncomfortable and begin to miss your motherland, your family, your friends, your pets and so on. Al1 the little prob1ems in life seem to be much bigger and more worrying when you face them in a foreign country. This period can be very difficult and lead to moving backwards quickly.

The third period is called the “adjustment (调整) period”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the new country. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize you are becoming stronger by 1earning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.

The fourth period can be cal1ed “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have prob1ems with language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. At this time, you may feel a little uncomfortable if you go back to your motherland.

For hundreds of years the plants were protected safely．But some beans were smuggled (偷运) out of Arabia and taken to India．In the 17th century, coffee was soon grown in a new continent．From India to Indonesia, a century later the beans were once again smuggled to Brazil．Brazil is now the largest coffee producer in the world．

It was the caffeine that made the goats dance and kept the monks awake．Although it is found in other soft drinks and tea, coffee has the most caffeine．In the short term．a couple of cups of coffee can prevent fatigue and delay sleep．But several cups a day, every day, can cause anxiety and restlessness．

You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. Murray had not been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o'clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.

Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It had more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!
